Scott Steve Braden Cawthon (Houston, 4 giugno 1978) è un informatico, scrittore, animatore, ex designer di videogiochi e ex sviluppatore di videogiochi indipendente statunitense, conosciuto maggiormente per la sua serie videoludica Five Nights at Freddy's. Esordi[]
Si può ipotizzare che, nel periodo degli anni novanta, Scott abbia iniziato la sua carriera informatica. Il suo primo gioco del periodo era chiamato "Doofas". I suoi primi giochi ufficiali arrivarono nei primi anni del 2000, tra cui ricordiamo RPG Max (2002). Successivamente si unì alla "Hope Animation", dove creò animazioni per bambini basati sulla cristianità.
L'avvento di Youtube[]
Il 19 marzo 2007, Cawthon pubblicò sul suo canale YouTube la prima parte della sua serie The Pilgrim's Progress, basata sull'omonimo romanzo di John Bunyan. Dopo aver completato questa serie di otto parti, Cawthon iniziò la pubblicazione di diversi giochi tra cui Sit 'N Survive, Chipper and Sons Lumber Co. e The Desolate Hope. Alcuni di essi, come The Desolate Hope, furono approvati da Steam Greenlight e pubblicati su Steam, mentre altri, tra cui Chipper and Sons Lumber Co., furono giudicati fortemente negativi dalla critica.
Five Nights at Freddy's[]
In seguito a queste critiche (che sostenevano che il gioco aveva grafiche adatte più ad un titolo horror che per bambini) Scott rilasciò il suo gioco più famoso, Five Nights at Freddy's. Una demo del gioco fu pubblicata su IndieDB il 24 luglio 2014, il gioco completo fu pubblicato l'8 agosto dello stesso anno su Desura e il 18 agosto fu pubblicato su Steam e ottimizzato per Play Store e App Store. Ben presto iniziò lo sviluppo del secondo gioco, ed da allora la serie videoludica fu instoppabile.
Verso la fine dell'estate 2018, Cawthon elencò su un post di Steam i progetti che erano in lavorazione, tra cui un film basato sulla storia di Five Nights at Freddy's, e vari nuovi giochi .
Il ritiro di Scott[]
Nel 2021 Scott Cawthon fu accusato di razzismo e omotransfobia, a seguito della diffusione in rete di informazioni su delle donazioni da lui fatte ad un determinato partito politico. Su Reddit, Cawthon smentì tali accuse, sostenendo di credere nell'uguaglianza di ogni individuo e di aver fatto solamente quello che riteneva giusto per il suo Paese.
Il 17 giugno 2021, Cawthon ha ufficialmente affermato, tramite un annuncio su Scottgames, la decisione di terminare la sua carriera come sviluppatore di videogiochi e di smettere di lavorare a Five Nights at Freddy's per dedicarsi alla sua famiglia costituita dalla moglie e dai cinque figli, con un sesto in attesa. Cawthon già da tempo aveva espresso desiderio di ritirarsi, tuttavia é possibile che le molte critiche ricevute a causa delle sue donazioni politiche abbiano accelerato le decisione. Nell'annuncio ringrazia i suoi fan e sostiene che lascerà la serie di Five Nights at Freddy's a qualcun altro di cui si fida.
