12tone is a YouTuber who makes videos about music theory.

Personal life[]

12tone is agender,[1] and uses they/them pronouns.[2] They were diagnosed with autism as a child, and informed of this at fifteen.[3]

12tone enjoys rock climbing.[4]

Education and academia[]

In college, 12tone was a vocalist.[5] They have a Bachelor's degree in vocal performance.[6]

In 2020, they contributed to the Oxford Handbook on Public Music Theory, which includes a chapter on Music Theory YouTube.[7]

YouTube[]

In the early year of 12tone's channel, most of their videos were about things they already knew about.[8] For a time, they were their music theory class's unofficial tutor, and found they "really enjoyed teaching it,… [and] wanted an outlet for that."[9]

In August 2021, 12tone switched from a weekly[10] to an every-other-week upload schedule,[11] as they worried about running out of topics.[12]

12tone is influenced by minutephysics and Vihart.[13] The elephant in 12tone's videos comes from "Elephants Grow Big, Dangly Faces", a mnemonic for the lines of the treble clef.[14]

They edit in Premiere.[15]

The channel's logo, of a treble and bass clef, was created by its original animator, Emmanuel.[16]

Podcast[]

They co-host the podcast Ghost Notes with Polyphonic.[17]

  11. Hey, folks! I just wanted to update you all on something: Starting this month, 12tone is switching to an every-other-week publishing schedule. 12. But what I can run out of, and what I feel I'm dangerously close *to* running out of is video topics that I can wrap my head around quickly. That's the dwindling resource.. 12tone – Twitter (August 22, 2021).
