2NE1 (Korean: 투애니원) is a South Korean[citation needed] girl group formed by YG Entertainment.[citation needed]
History[]
Formation[]
In May 2008, South Korean media reported on the potential lineup of YG Entertainment's upcoming girl group, "female Big Bang".[1] In early 2009, YG confirmed that four members would debut as a group in May, making them the first girl group under the agency since Big Mama in 2003.[2]
2NE1's first extended play, 2NE1 (2009), featured two singles, including "Lollipop" released on March 27, 2009, to promote LG Cyon phones.[2] Despite a music video,[3] the song was not promoted due to product advertising, causing issues with its eligibility for South Korean music charts.[4]
The group released their second EP, 2NE1 (2011), featuring the number-one hits "Lonely", "I Am the Best", and "Ugly", as well as the top-three hit "Hate You".[5]
Disbandment[]
In April 2016, YG Entertainment confirmed Minzy's departure from 2NE1.[6] CL and Dara remained as solo artists, while Bom was released from her contract.[7][8] In January 2017, the group released their last single, "Goodbye,"[9] inspired by a letter CL wrote to Minzy.[10] The song became their second to top the Billboard World Digital Songs chart[11] and entered national charts in France and Finland.[12][13]
Reunion[]
The group reunited for their first performance in over six years at the Coachella festival on April 16, 2022, performing "I Am the Best" after the 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awards.[14][15]
On July 22, 2024, YG Entertainment announced that 2NE1 will reunite for a series of shows to celebrate their 15th anniversary, with their fourth concert tour, the Welcome Back Tour, starting on October 4, 2024, and continuing into 2025.[16]
