3RACHA (Korean: 쓰리라차; Romanization: Sseuriracha) is a South Korean hip-hop trio, best known as a sub-unit of the K-pop boy group Stray Kids. The trio, consisting of Bang Chan (CB97), Changbin (SPEARB), and HAN (J.ONE), began their work together and started releasing music in 2017, prior to Stray Kids' official debut in 2018.
3RACHA is recognized for their involvement in writing, composing, and producing music, both for Stray Kids and as 3RACHA. Their experimental and self-produced tracks set the foundation for Stray Kids' signature sound.

Career[]

2016-2018: 3RACHA[]

The group was formed in 2016 by Bang Chan, Changbin, and HAN, who were idol trainees under JYP Entertainment while attending MIDI classes at the JYP Entertainment Training Center.[1] 3RACHA debuted on January 18, 2017, with their first mixtape released on SoundCloud and YouTube, promoted through the Korean hip-hop forum HIPHOPLE.[2] They announced a biweekly mixtape schedule, each featuring an original track and a cover.

Their first extended play, J:/2017/mixtape, was released on April 26, followed by regular uploads of mixtapes under the same format. On July 2, they performed live for the first time at The Ugly Junction Live in Seoul, showcasing tracks like "ID:a", "Don't Touch Me", and "Runner's High". Subsequent mixtapes included 3Days (August 16) and Horizon (December 20).

To mark their one-year anniversary, they released a reflective single, "Start Line", on January 18, 2018, celebrating their journey and growth as a crew.

2018-Present: 3RACHA of Stray Kids[]

On March 25, 2018, 3RACHA officially debuted as part of Stray Kids, serving as the group's primary production team. Since then, the trio has been responsible for much of the group’s songwriting, composition, and production work.

On September 9, 2018, they released a music video for their first song post-debut, "ZONE", as part of Stray Kids' SKZ-PLAYER series.
On January 18, 2020, the trio celebrated their third anniversary as a team with the release of the single "Carpe Diem", reaffirming their identity as an independent yet integral part of Stray Kids.

On February 21, 2022, they ventured into international collaborations, featuring on the single "JUST BREATHE" by Japanese rapper SKY-HI.

On September 20, 2022, 3RACHA contributed "HEYDAY" to the soundtrack compilation Street Man Fighter Original Vol.4

On February 3, 2023, all three members were promoted to regular members of the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA), recognizing their substantial contributions as songwriters and producers.[3]

On September 23, 2023, following a car accident involving fellow Stray Kids members Lee Know, Hyunjin, and Seungmin, 3RACHA stepped up to represent Stray Kids at the prestigious Global Citizen Festival.

On December 8, 2023, 3RACHA appeared as special judges in the "Final Stages" episode of Nizi Project Season 2.

Trivia[]

  • The name "3RACHA" is a creative play on the word "Sriracha", the popular hot sauce.
    • They chose this name to symbolize the "spicy" and "fiery" nature of their music, encouraging listeners to feel the "heat" of their words and beats.[4]
    • Bang Chan shared another meaning of the name "3RACHA," explaining that "racha" translates to "storm" in Spanish and "king" in Thai.[5]
  • Bang Chan's stage name, CB97, comes from his initials and birth year. The "CB" stands for "Chan Bang" or "Christopher Bang" (his birth name), and the "97" refers to his birth year, 1997.
  • Changbin's stage name, SPEARB, comes from the meaning of his name. The "Spear" part is derived from the Korean word for spear, chang (창), and the "B" comes from the second syllable of his name, Bin (빈).
  • HAN's stage name, J.ONE, comes from his name's meaning. The "J" represents his first name, Jisung, while "One" is derived from his surname, Han, which translates to "one" in Korean.
