5-Minute Crafts is a YouTube channel and is the most subscribed craft channel on YouTube maintained by media publisher TheSoul Publishing,[1] based in Limassol, Cyprus. They also own other YouTube channels such as BRIGHT SIDE, and ACTUALLY HAPPENED. The videos uploaded on 5-Minute Crafts are usually compilations of DIY projects,[2] life hacks,[3] pranks,[4] riddles,[5] and crafts that are posted on both Facebook and YouTube.[6] They are the most subscribed How-To/DIY channel on the platform.[7] Despite this, they have received a lot of criticism by many due to them being a content farming company and posing a danger to viewers by some of their videos.[8]
5-Minute Crafts was, at one point, one of the fastest-growing YouTube channels in subscribers, gaining over 1-4 million subscribers every month and averaging over 200,000-50,000 subscribers every day from 2018 to 2019, and was even at one point the 3rd most subscribed YouTube channel behind PewDiePie and T-Series.[9] In addition, the channel also achieved 500 million video views every month.[10] It's also the fastest channel to have reached 50 million subscribers, doing so in 828 days after the channel was created.[11] Likely due to negative backlash and changes to the YouTube algorithm, 5-Minute Crafts has slowed down in both subscribers and channel views.[12]
Controversy[]
As many people have mentioned, the channel is a huge content farm, churning out as much content as possible without much bother for quality aside from visual.[13] They send out about four 10 minute long videos every day, with high-quality graphics.[14] On closer inspection, you see the content they produce features swift tutorials and crafts, each video is often a compilation of said crafts and is made to fit videos on social media apps with a shorter, speedier format, such as Instagram, where a user requires to make the video under a few seconds to grab viewers' attention and get the point across in time; since Instagram lacks a feature in which a viewer can go to/rewind a particular part of the video. Otherwise, on YouTube, they go slow and add long pauses to add length to the video, which proves that they're clickbait.[15]
The channel is also infamous for its clickbait, where they would display a picture in the thumbnail regarding a specific "life hack", but do not have the same advertised content in the video.[16] They're also known for lying about the quality of all their hacks, acting like something instantly fixes something when it doesn't even though most of their hacks are fake.[17] The channel was also infamous for repeating videos a lot at one point.[18]
One of 5-Minute Crafts video contains a instruction video on using rubber-gloved hand puts a strawberry in bleach to make a white strawberry towards kids.[19] Even if that did work, a bleached strawberry shouldn’t be eaten.[20][21] This result massive backlash from American YouTuber Jarvis Johnson, who pointed out negligence when it comes to kids watching this stuff, especially when fire and power tools are involved.[22][23] Later on 5-Minute Crafts deleted the clip of the bleach strawberry scene.[24]
