Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, abbreviated as ASMR, is a phenomenon that is described as tingling that occurs from relaxing sounds and visual stimuli. Tingles mostly occur in the spine that goes up to the neck. Many of these sounds include tapping, mouth sounds, scratching, calming music, and various other things. Many cite painter Bob Ross as the first source of ASMR sensation. While this YouTuber is not categorized in ASMR, PES has had videos of relaxing sounds. The first instance of ASMR on YouTube was back in 2009 by YouTuber WhisperingLife ASMR. Many years later, it soon became a popular and respected genre around 2018 with many growing YouTubers specializing in ASMR. The most subscribed ASMR YouTuber is Pokimane.
Types of ASMR videos[]
Relaxation videos[]
These types of videos are mostly just the YouTuber attempting to make the viewer relax by only including tingles. Most of them have the intention of making the viewer relax or making it easier to sleep. Sometimes they will usually talk, say something inaudible, or not speak at all. They time mostly ranges from minutes to hours. In some instances, they will use other sources for ASMR, sometimes video games or videos that don't intend to make the viewer tingle. The most popular video game to use tingles is Minecraft.
Roleplay videos[]
These videos still have tingles and whispering, but will have made up skits. Most of the roleplays range from simple ideas like employees to more extreme videos like kidnap victims. They can either range from serious to comedic, depending on the type of roleplay. Some will usually have different types of costumes or a green screen background.
Eating/Mukbang videos[]
Eating videos have the YouTuber consuming foods to give the user tingles. Most of these foods can range to different types from vegetables to more unhealthy choices. These videos originate from the popular South Korean genre, Mukbang. The quantity of the foods can also be differ as well, with some YouTubers eating gigantic amounts of a certain food.
