A Jolly Wangcore (also known as Jolly Wanker or Jolly/Wangcore), is an Australian gaming YouTuber and Twitch streamer known for his videos on playthroughs of modded games, particularly Half-Life, Portal & Doom mods.
History[]
Jolly created his channel on September 4, 2010 and started uploading sometime between 2010-2014.[1] He had initially started with text-only commentary but eventually transitioned into voiced commentary, after which he started only uploading cut-down and edited versions of his streams. On July 5, 2018, he created a second channel where he would "upload content not fit for the main channel"[2] On November 16, 2020, he created his third channel for his Twitch VODs after Twitch forced ads onto their platform.[3] On November 2020, Jolly was hit with a community guideline strike for various older videos that didn't align with YouTubes new community guidelines, this prompted him to private the videos and upload them to a new channel, Jolly Wangcore's Old Video Archive.[4]On January 3, 2021, he created his fifth channel for Twitch clips.[5]
Content[]
A majority of Jolly's content consists of edited Twitch streams where he plays through Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Portal & Doom mods, though sometimes he will upload indie games or other modded games. This content will usually be put on YouTube; however, he will usually stream other games on Twitch for fun.[citation needed]
Jokes/Bits[]
Throughout Jolly's videos & streams consists of jokes/bits created by him or his community. Here is a (WIP) list of all the recurring/memorable jokes/bits created by him or the community.
- "The World's Smallest Coffee Cup[6]": This was originally a comment made about a small Black Mesa coffee cup model being too small in the "Crack Life: Remastered" mod during a stream however voice actor Michael Hillard (who voices Kleiner in Black Mesa) made a joke audio recording of how Kleiner would've said it. This eventually created the infamous G-Mod animation[7] that was made by Delak.
- "Strider Porn[8]": After completing the HL2 mod "Research and Development", Jolly searched up Strider porn on Rule-34 Paheal and found an old early 2010s sketch which seemed to be gay porn of two striders, this included a small confused Gordon Freeman on the bottom left.
- "Dota 2 Houndeyes[9]": For the longest time, while playing and streaming Half-Life 2: Overcharged; Jolly considered the houndeyes seen throughout the mod to be just re-used Half-Life 2 Beta enemies[10]. However in the fourth part of his playthrough stream twitch chat informed him that the hound-eyes seen in the mod are an unused model that can be found in the Dota 2 files.
- "Nightmare House 2: Easter Egg[11]": During the end of Jolly's playthrough/stream of Nightmare House 2, a twitch-viewer informed him of an easter egg. The easter-egg displayed a POV music video parody of the song "Amazing Horse" by Mr. Weebi but lip-synced by the characters from the mod.
- "Skippy the Jedi Droid[12]": While streaming Doom 3 during his second stream, Jolly eventually had a rant about Star Wars which turned into him finding out about R5-D4. This led to him ranting for 10+ minutes about how its story made Star Wars feel "small" and didn't feel fleshed out. Jolly considered that this version of R5 was originally canon but was pushed into the EU garbage can when Disney took over.
Original Characters[]
Over the course of streaming various HL1/HL2 mods, Jolly gave "birth" to many different original characters. Some ally, some enemies. Some are even used as joke characters for the edited highlight video(s). Here is a (WIP) list of them.
- Hunty[13][14][15]: A former obedient Combine Hunter synth turned Resistance ally after being abandoned by its Strider group, This Hunter becomes Jolly's "pet synth dog" in the highlight video "Unlikely Allies" and is beloved by his community. Hunty also has an unnamed Combine Gunship best friend ally as well.
- The Bug Friend #2[16]: A former antlion owned by the defunct company NERDS is used as an ally "pet" for Jolly against the Combine. They inevitably are killed by an explosion.
- The Bad Penguins[17]: Modified Crack-Life: Opposing Force species of penguins that scream "Do you suck d*ck" and will not stop chasing you until they kill you, in which when done, they explode.
- Satilan[18]: The cheap dollar-store Gordon Freeman that has a poor use of the english language.
- The Tankbot[19]: A modified Combot strapped with Merkava cannons that terrified Jolly.
- Cave_Johnson[20]: A twitch user variant of the infamous Portal deuteragonist "Cave Johnson" that usually mocks anything related to Black Mesa.
- Dave & Steve[21]: Two naive Metrocops on the hunt for Gordon Freeman that are easily killed due to their lack of knowledge on sniper fire.
- Heavy ("Alien Friend")[22][23]: As Black Mesa went into turmoil, a Gargantua roamed the facility killing practically everything in its way while also posing as the "unstoppable force" in the mod. It was eventually killed when trying to kill Jolly before the nuclear explosion of Black Mesa.
- Burnie & Bort[24][25]: Barney Calhoun's twin brother(s) clones that appear in the beginning of Half-Life: Blue Shift.
- Borty & Batt[26]: Another two Barney clones, with Barty being considered a "dick" by Jolly. Originally, Jolly wanted to give Borty the name "Batthew" but changed it fairly quickly.
- Bob Calhoun[27]: Another Barney clone however primarily guards the Black Mesa security wards' bathroom. His name comes from the highlight video rather than the actual original streams' recording.
- Barry Calhoun[28]: A deceased Barney clone that died to a Houndeye.
- Barney Clone #285[29]: Another deceased Barney clone that was killed by a Vortigaunt.
- Barney #3784[30]: Another deceased Barney clone that was ambushed by various H.E.C.U. marines then striped of his armor/uniform.
- Barney Clone #27 & Barnetta Calhoun[31]: Two genetically modified clones of Barney Calhoun that escaped Black Mesa and started a family with each other. This baffled scientists until the Seven Hour War. Their whereabouts remain unknown.
- Butter (Unit: Butter)[32]: During the raid on a resistance hideout/base in the arctic, Jolly (Unit 3650) was given multiple combine soldier allies, one of them he decided to name "Butter" simply because his head was smooth, he was slippery and he was unique. Unlike most troops, Unit: Butter was equipped with the Gauss Pistol. He is later killed by Jolly on accident[33] when forgetting he was playing Entropy Zero 2. Jolly's initial reaction to Butters' death was of sorrow, guilt and panic. When dying & respawning, Butter dies again to multiple rebels & the sniper all targetting him.
- Crispy the Cat[34]: A deceased house cat that was accidentally killed by Jolly however when taken in a vent to go on a fun adventure, Crispy fades from existence as the mod loads the next area of the map.
- Bill, Dave & Ted[35]: Three Antlion companions that served with Gordon Freeman during the Nova Prospekt raid for Eli Vance, they died by the Combine Gunship.
- The Terminator(s)[36]: During the assault on the Overwatch Nexus, as Gordon Freeman tried escaping its roof, a Combine Guard fought against him. This in turn made Twitch Chat refer to it as the "Half-Life: Terminator" and Jolly agreed.
- Fort KickAss[37]: As the Resistance in City 10 have seized the abandoned city, a group of them converted a building into a makeshift prison with one of its members making a large box fort and camps inside of it with a shotgun. This character genuinely pissed Jolly off to the point where when killed, Jolly teabagged him mercilessly.
- The Eye[38]: During the first stream of Abiotic Factor, Jolly arranged multiple cropped previews of his webcam to show his detached eyes and mouth. What was originally a stunt for comedic effect, transitioned into the personification of different characters throughout the stream as Jolly played with the cropped features in question. "The Eye", an omnipotent being type, became the most characterised.
Trivia[]
- Jolly first played Half-Life 2 in 2008 during a steam sale[39].
- Otis Laurey is Jolly's favorite[40] character in the Half-Life series[41][42].
- His favorite game of 2022 is Elden Ring[43].
- Jolly's favorite HL2 Mod of all time is Research and Development[44].
- Jolly states that the E3 2003 Demo of Half-Life 2 is "pure lies" as most of it uses content already scrapped & brings up the Combine Soldier barricade scripted sequence[45] for reference (from the e3_ravenholm map)[46].
- While playing the Overcharged mod, during the chapter "Anticitizen One" Jolly stopped everything when he realized the Hydra in the sewers section used the scripted e3_2002 tech demo animation & appreciated its fan remaster in the mod[47].
- Jolly and most of his Twitch-Community strongly dislike the concept of Race X existing in Ravenholm as it doesn't make sense lore wise and it was possible devs just wanted more "enemy variety[48]".
- For some odd reason, in the same chapter Jolly considered the infamous "Consoling Couple" characters to be a part of the mod[49]. Despite them being Vanilla, Jolly later cleared this up in another stream.
- Jolly has yet to find a Half-Life 2 mod that reintegrates the Beta XM29 OICW into a version of the game that feels & looks good[50].
- He considered the 2001-2002 design of Alyx Vance to be "hot" and respected Valve for changing her into a normal woman[51].
- He liked the beta/scrapped MP7 and wished it was a replacement for the SMG rather than having both[52].
- Jolly had mixed feelings about the original concept of the Ravenholm mining section and Digger being restored in the mod Half-Life 2: Overcharged[53].
- He referred to the Combine Guard as "Beta Grunts[54]" and the Hydra as "Tentacles" while playing Half-Life 2: Overcharged.
- When Twitch Chat gave Jolly his "history lesson" of the cut content of Half-Life 2, they supposedly used the Half-Life Wikia which is well known for having misinformation and out of date statements. It has been stated by many Half-Life fans that the Combine Overwiki is to be used instead.
- He loved the Half-Life: 2 modification "Kill the Monk" and wanted more content because of how stupid it was[55].
- When asked about making a highlight video/stream on the playable Half-Life 2: Beta or the mod Half-Life 2: Raising the Bar, Jolly stated probably but more than likely not[56].
- Jolly owns a Transformers: Beast Wars Megatron action figurine[57] and has shown it once on Twitter.
- He wanted the original title of "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" to just be known as Transformers: Beast Wars"[58].
- Jolly stated that the film 2018 reboot "Bumblebee" was good which spawned a greenlight for more spin-off films to be created. This was due to Michael Bay having very little involvement with the film[59].
- Although having many issues with Michael Bays adaptation of Transformers, he has stated he found the Orbital Assault Carriers seen in Dark of The Moon to be really cool and "underrated".
- (As of October 9, 2020): Jolly beat TitanFall 2, F.E.A.R., Crysis, Dishonored, Ultrakill & Black Mesa (Beta) on the hardest difficulties for each single-player game. He beat both FEAR & Crysis by going melee only[60].
- He considers Bethesda, Blizzard/Activision, Riot, EA, Take Two Interactive (Rockstar Games) & Ubisoft to be shitty companies while also promoting that his followers should stop supporting them[61].
- When asked about Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic because of its MMO style combat mechanics. He added that he might play another Star Wars game in the future but admits he isn't a fan of modern Star Wars or the fandom[62].
- He strongly considers Lightsabers and the old EU (Legends) to be really cool but finds most of Disney's canon to be "shit" or "boring"[63].
- His favorite movie is the 2007 comedy action film, Hot Fuzz[64].
- His first name is James[65].
