AbbVie originated as a spin-off of Abbott Laboratories, an American medical company. Abott announced it would separate into two companies. AbbVie would operate as a pharmaceutical manufacturer mostly based on research, and the new Abott Laboratories would specialize in products such as medical devices, diagnostic equipment and nutrition products. The separation was effective on January 1, 2013.
AbbVie has acquitted and merged with more than 25 medical companies. They have last acquitted DJS Antibodies in 2022.
