Yang Zhang,[citation needed] better known online as Accented Cinema, is a Chinese-Canadian[citation needed] YouTuber and film essayist who talks about Asian and world cinema. He is also a filmmaker and a photographer.[citation needed]

Content[]

Accented Cinema makes essays about how themes are portrayed in movies, like patriotism and food. As a lover of foreign films[1], he has also made videos of Japanese[2], North Korean[3], Ugandan[4], Malaysian[5] and Thai[6] films. He hates modern Chinese films, preferring older ones[7], as most modern Chinese films are rip offs of more popular ones[8].

Making several videos centered around the Chinese film industry, he makes videos analyzing the changes and influences on[9] them, sometimes including Chinese philosophy[10] in his analysis too. Occasionally he will review animated[11] movies like Studio Ghibli's Mononoke[12] and Over the Moon[13]. He also makes videos on mainstream anime such as Dragon Ball.

As a child, his favorite movie was the Disney animated film Mulan, fondly recalling how during his youth in China, he watched it on a school trip[14].

Collaborations[]

Despite hating knock-offs, he praised Hong Kong's knockoff version of Street Fighter[15], a video which also featured Xiran Jay Zhao.

He also made a video where Overly Sarcastic Productions talks about the complicated process of translating movies from English to Chinese.[citation needed]
