Advertising is the practice and techniques employed to bring attention to a product or service. Advertising aims to present a product or service in terms of utility, advantages and qualities of interest to consumers. It is typically used to promote a specific good or service, but there are a wide range of uses, the most common being commercial advertisement.

Commercial advertisements often seek to generate increased consumption of their products or services through "branding", which associates a product name or image with certain qualities in the minds of consumers. On the other hand, ads that intend to elicit an immediate sale are known as direct-response advertising.

Advertising on YouTube[]

Unknown-1

On YouTube, advertisments can appear before, after, or during a video of a monetized channel about 50% of the time. Some examples are games from Supercell, random PS4 games, seasonal commercials, YouTube Premium and Game of War, and sometimes average commercials are shown on TV.

These companies pay YouTube to sponsor them to help their business get stronger since YouTube is a busy site. They are shown according to the viewer's location, the video, or a recent search on Google.

To set up an ad, you have to have a Google Ads account and linking a channel to the account.[1]

Controversy[]

Longer advertisements[]

On Reddit, multiple users posted on r/youtube showing longer ads, with one showing an 85 second ad, or 1:25 long.[2][3]

Criticism[]

YouTube advertisments have been criticized for taking up a lot of space on the site. Video ads are likewise viewed as a waste of time, especially the unskippable ads. This has led to many users installing adblocking extensions to keep the site ad-free. Eventually, YouTube made every 30 second-long ad skippable in a gradual aggressive pursuit for the revenue lost due to users using adblocks. Two-minute long unskippable ads have also been reported.[4][5]

Trivia[]

  • Subscribing to YouTube Premium includes ad-free streaming.[6]
  • As of October 2023, ads are now known as "Sponsors".
  • On February 2023, Everybody is no longer eligible to see skippable advertisements when using Fire OS Devices. Instead, they are only forced to see unskippable ones.
    • For obvious reasons, this update was released before unskippable advertisements were released on YouTube.
