), formerly known online as Ahoynateo, is an AmericanContent[]
AhoyNateo's videos typically consisted of Owens directly addressing the camera in a ‘vlog style,’ using his humor and unique style to garner love and praise on nearly every video he made, averaging 30,000 views on each.
While many of Nathan's videos still exist on the DesandNate channel, his ahoynateo channel, which had amassed nearly 300,000 subscribers over its 10+ year span, has been deleted and the videos removed, likely due to the 2021 Controversy surrounding the counterpart of the DesandNate channel, Destery Smith.
Controversies[]
Falling Out With Capndesdes[]
On February 10th, 2021, Tiktok user @urgirladrie uploaded a video sharing that she had had an unsettling experience with a YouTuber when she was 18. Two days later this person was identified as Destery Smith, better known online as CapnDesDes. Owens commented on the video remarking that someone was finally speaking out against Smith. Owens then made his own videos on the platform explaining the situation leading up to them ending their friendship. He explains that allegedly, Smith had been manipulative, had frequently lied to his peers, and was unfaithful to his girlfriends over the years. In a Twitter post, Owens shared that he was not fairly compensated for his involvement in the DesandNate channel and their merchandise line. In a live stream from Smith's Twitch channel dating around June 2021, he responded to this allegation, claiming “I would pay Nathan 100% of anything he himself made on the channel. He didn’t get paid because he didn’t upload anything.” In contrast to this, sources close to Owens testify that he had in fact uploaded videos and contributed to designing merchandise for the shared channel. [1]In regards to this, an ex girlfriend of Owens had publicly confirmed a lack of compensation for his work.
In one of the videos, Owens recounts that in 2018, he and Smith shared interest in a girl named Evie (otherwise known as EeveeDavis). Owens goes on to explain that Smith lied to him and Smith's long-term girlfriend Amber about Evie and his relationship. He would go on to claim that this was 'years in the making' and Smith's behavior was ultimately the reason the friendship ended. Smith has failed to mention his feelings on the subject, saying only "sometimes friendships end, but that's okay. I hope he's doing well."
Allegations of Inappropriate Behavior[]
On September 7th, 2011, Smith posted a vlog titled "Destery Watch - ADVENTURE THREE: Coeur d Alene Fair!" where he had met a 16 year old girl named Cynthia. Cynthia confirmed this via tweet on February 13th, 2021, stating:
[2]"So I was one of the MANY underage girls that Destrey preyed on. I was 16 at the time. After meeting them at the fair(which they have a video of) they gave me a ride home and Destrey got my phone number. He messaged me right after and then sometime later on convinced me to go to his house where we ended up sleeping together. He did this with multiple other girls that I know and have talked to personally. He also slept with my best friend at the time who was a year younger than me."
A Tiktok user by the name of lyzzy made a video titled "Nate’s Story Doesn’t Add Up" where she addresses that Smith likely IS a terrible person as Owens claims, but also recounts where Owens himself slept with a friend of hers when she was 15 and Owens was 21. This was confirmed even further by Cynthia. [3]On March 13th, 2021, lyzzy posted a followup video on Tiktok stating that her and Cynthia had shared their grievances with Owens and his girlfriend and asked that people refrain from harassing the couple online.
Videos of Owens' past relationship with fellow content creator Leda, better known as LedaMonsterBunny, resurfaced and garnered criticism for their age gap, where Owens was 18 and Leda was 15 when they started dating. The pair dated for two years and broke up in 2011, when they were 17 and 21.
Current Status[]
Owens currently lives with his girlfriend Cassie (known online as Casxtle). Despite his prominence in the early years of YouTube, Owens ultimately decided to part ways with his online persona, no longer wanting to be Ahoynateo. Sources close to him say he no longer wants to be tied to Smith and their shared channel.
