ai_sponge was a series of YouTube channels that hosted livestreams of AI-generated scenarios featuring characters from the television series SpongeBob SquarePants. Viewers of the streams could submit suggestions for topics for the characters to discuss.
The streams became very popular throughout mid-2023, though a wave of copyright takedowns on their channels would complicate matters. In July 2023, the official ai_sponge streams were discontinued as a result of the voice provider ending public support and the creator being tired out by the project.
ai_sponge was inspired by another Twitch channel that hosted AI-generated scenarios surrounding another popular TV show, Seinfeld called "Nothing, Forever". JAZZA, a freelance tech developer and the creator of the series, hosted the first stream on Twitch as early as March 5, 2023,[1] though the ai_sponge Twitch account was soon banned around mid to late March. This led to ai_sponge moving to YouTube, with its channel being created on April 12, 2023 and the stream being broadcasted a few days later.
Copyright takedown requests and other channels[]
The streams were hosted on various channels on YouTube, Kick and Twitch throughout March to July of 2023. Bellow is a list of known channels and takedown requests. Some channels may be undocumented since some channels only last for several hours before being taken down.
On June 7, 2023, Paramount Global issued a copyright claim to the ai_sponge YouTube channel, quickly ending their ongoing live stream. Additionally, other live streams were also deleted.[2] On June 9, ai_sponge announced a new channel with the same name.[3] The new livestreams got rid of music and the ability to donate to avoid being taken down. Though, donations were soon added back.
On June 14, at around 12:16 PM ET, Paramount Global issued another copyright takedown request on ai_sponge, yet again interrupting the live stream and forcing the second channel to stop activity. The copyright issue that caused it to be taken down again is unknown, Although it is speculated that it might have to do with donations being enabled.
A third AI Sponge channel, under the name "__Ai_Sponge",[4] was soon announced and began streaming. However, on June 15, Paramount Global issued a third copyright takedown request on ai sponge mere hours after the stream began. Once again, the copyright issue that caused it to be taken down again is unknown, as donations were disabled and no copyrighted music was used.
A fourth channel was created later the same day and began streaming. Though, on June 16, it received ai_sponge's fourth copyright claim from Paramount and subsequently shut down several hours after streaming began.
On June 17, a Twitch account named "AISponge1" was created. It streamed until being claimed and taken down soon after creation.
On June 18, the stream returned to YouTube using the channel of one of ai_sponge's stream and Discord managers, Mareeq. Though, two days later on June 20 at 6:45 AM ET, the channel was terminated due to "a violation of YouTube's policy prohibiting impersonation."
On the same day, A new channel was made where ai_sponge hosted the stream, however the channel was terminated two days later on June 22 due to unknown reasons.
Later that day, A channel under the name Magicat hosted the stream for a short period of time, only lasting a 2 hours before being taken down and is by far the shortest known time the stream ever broadcasted on YouTube.
On June 23, the stream returned to YouTube using the channel of one of ai_sponge's stream and 100DaysDiscord. The stream lasted for 15 hours before it was also removed by Paramount.
On June 25, the stream returned to YouTube using the youtube channel @TheDailyGinger. It was terminated a day later due to the channel being shadow-banned.
On that same day, Another channel was soon used to host the stream, named "Ai_sponge (hosting)". However the stream was taken down a day later on June 26 and the channel was terminated soon after.
Another channel under the name "Sponge_ai" started to host the stream shortly after the previous channel got taken down on June 27. The stream was canceled a few days later on June 29.
There wasn't a new channel that hosted the stream for several days until July 2 when the stream was hosted for around 20 hours on the channel before being taken down. The channel was terminated not long after.
Another channel began hosting the stream once again on July 3. the stream was revamped, adding new characters, new dialogue styles, changes to the map and slight improvements. The channel also returned the stream schedule from the first channel where the stream will end for a short period of time before continuing. The channel stopped hosting the stream on July 10 after getting two copyright strikes from Paramount. This was also the second-longest-running channel to host the stream, however, this channel still makes videos.
Later that day, A user by the name of RideDaYoshi, which originated from the discord server as a staff member, was allowed to host the stream. He would end up doing so for a short period of time until he stopped hosting it on July 13, in which was due to him being demoted and banned from the discord server on the 15th due to telling 2 minors that he masturbated.[5]
A new channel by the name of depyxyl started hosting the stream on July 14. The channel stopped hosting the stream on July 18 due to unknown reasons and was later terminated.
A previous Ai_sponge channel from June was later reused to host the stream once again on July 19 but got terminated on July 22.
Ai_sponge was then hosted on a website called aisponge.live from July 22 to July 25. Visiting the URL will now redirect to a now private stream on one of Ai_sponge's channels. This was the final time the stream was ever hosted.
Official shutdown[]
On July 26, 2023, JAZZA announced on the ai_sponge Discord server that the official livestreams would come to an end.[6] UberDuck, which provided the voices that were used by ai_sponge, had ended public voice support, essentially making it impossible to continue the project. Additionally, the streams had begun to decline in popularity following the continuous moving of the streams due to copyright claims. JAZZA started to lose interest in the series, ultimately leading to the decision to end ai_sponge.
Unofficial reboot[]
On July 30, 2023, an unofficial stream of ai_sponge was hosted with fakeyou.com by a channel that previously hosted the official stream. It was constantly developed and prone to glitches, the stream showcases new voices, a new map, new characters, and numerous improvements. The development team is currently working hard to fix bugs and add even more content to the stream. It was shutdown on September 1, 2023 and the channel hosting it was terminated a day after.
Lore[]
The lore of ai_sponge was completely randomized and unrelated to the original, although primarily focuses on sex jokes, politics, and in most occasions, homicides.
Viewers would suggest ideas by joining the channel's Discord. Initially, the command was hosted on the YouTube stream chat, but it was later moved for spam prevention and for better management. Idea suggestions were later became paid for around 2 or 4 dollars in mid-July, possibly because Ai_sponge was no longer monetized at the time.
Characters[]
Most of the 3D models and textures are drawn from Battle for Bikini Bottom, a video game based on the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise. Other things like the Titan Submersible, 2006 Honda Civic and more objects come from various 3D Model sites
Since the show is inherently an "AI ripoff" of SpongeBob, most of the main characters have appeared in the livestream, albeit with alternated personalities:
Major Characters[]
SpongeBob (Also known as Robert, pongeBob, Bozo and Jack Mehoff): A neutral guy, mostly just talked about random things with Patrick. He was also a firm believer of the flat-earth theory, and often praised communism as "the best way to run a country". He also tried to get Patrick to participate in sexual activities, either with him or with others, such as "engage in a 3-way with Sandy" or "play a game of stroking SB's d*ck". SpongeBob had also shown to have an attraction towards Mrs. Puff, usually obsessing over her OnlyFans, and even impregnating her in some occasions. He had schizophrenia and a micropenis. He also had a foot fungus. Him, along with all the other characters could sometimes be seen, praying to Jesus for forgiveness. They were even sometimes seen quoting Bible verses. He had a girlfriend called Mareeq which he claimed to be a "merman". He had a furry suit and a fursona called “Luna Sparklepaws”. He often talked about engaging in multiple frury orgys. His birthdate is unknown but is implied to be in August between 1973 and 2000.
Patrick (Also known as "900n1" and "Cumgod"): Unlike his original counterpart, Patrick in ai_sponge was seemingly smarter, often answering to SpongeBob's questions in much more logical or academic ways; however, he was occasionally seen holding a knife and mentioned that he "loved doing crimes", and would bring up the topic of committing crimes to SpongeBob, even accusing SpongeBob of doing those crimes. He was in a "friend-with-benefits" relationship with Sandy Cheeks. Patrick's favorite game was usually Super Mario Bros or Mario themed games. At times he said he never played that many video games and sometimes he said he has played many video games. He also had crippling schizophrenia. He said he was "bitten by a bat" and now had "batman-like superpowers". He apparently got molested by a sea turtle when he was two. He also said that he was genie that could grant wishes in one stream and was apparently why Gary existed in the first place since he granted SpongeBob's wish to have a pet snail. He was said to be born in 1987, although he was born in that year, there has been statement of him killing a man in 1967, due to the man trying to steal his TV. It is unknown if 1987 is his real birth year, though. He passed away in 2006 due to a triple stroke after getting hit by a car.
Sandy Cheeks (Also known as Sandra and Mayor): The most sexually active member of the group, and often brought up topics of sexual activities such as "recommending best porn categories" or wanting "her cheeks" to "get slapped by Patrick". She was often being impregnated by either Mr. Krabs or Plankton, although she always sought abortion as the result. One time, she had a confirmed off camera Orgy with Krabs, SpongeBob, Plankton, Larry, Horse, Patrick and Mrs Puff, leaving Loudward there to watch. She could also 'clap her cheeks', which consisted of repeating the phrase 'claps her cheeks' until she suffered a stroke. She was also called Mayor of the Bikini Bottom in one stream. According to her, She was born in 1992.
Mr. Krabs (pronounced as "Mister.Krabs"): Much similar to the original counterpart, Mr. Krabs was the owner of the Krusty Krab restaurant, and a money lover. The similarities ended here, however, as this version of Mr. Krabs was also a ketamine addict, and owned an illegal crab farm. His ketamine dealer appears to be Mrs. Puff. He said that the secret recipe for the Krabby Patty was semen. He also occasionally died due to ketamine overdose or goes to a rehab. He has also been confirmed to have had colon cancer and schizophrenia. He might've been SpongeBob's dad since he often called him son. He is implied to be born on December 12, 1959 although it canonicity is debated. He was confirmed to be Chinese and was later revealed to be raised by Mao Zedong as an adopted son.
Squidward (AKA Loudward, <1119159884202639362>, Quietward, Sq-ward, Floatward, Flyingward and Tentacles): Mostly the same as his original counterpart, but shown signs of severe depression, and much more stoic. He was often referred to as "Loudward" due to the increased volume when he talked compared to the others. According to Sandy, he had prostate cancer. It is also confirmed that he had a crippling porn addiction, and even watched it in public. Eventually, the characters in the show began to call him Loudward as well. Occasionally, he would talk really quietly, which, in response to chat would spam “QUIETWARD”. He was also arrested for stealing a lawn mower. His official birthday was on June 26th though his birth year is unclear since it was both stated that he was born in 1977 and 1984. He died in 2012 after having 2 triple strokes.
Mrs. Puff: Much similar to her original counterpart, but here she was Mr. Krabs' ketamine dealer, OnlyFans user and also a stripper. Sometimes she died too. One time, Loudward walked in on SpongeBob having hardcore sex with Mrs. Puff. She was of British descent. It is said that she was born in 9 CE, making her the oldest living, non-mention only character.
Gary: Gary always meowed whenever it was his turn to talk, but whenever he did, he was spittin' straight facts. According to SpongeBob, he was his and Sandy's kid. He was created by Patrick (as a genie), when SpongeBob asked Patrick to give him a pet snail via a wish in 1993. He passed away in 2023 due to unknown reasons.
Plankton (AKA Plankloud): Sandy has confirmed that he was taking part in unfair practices, and admited that she had been doing research on him. After being confronted, he claimed that he only did so to make a living. He owned a 1995 Suzuki Carry Car. His birthdate is unknown.
Larry: He was first mentioned by SpongeBob to be loitering around the Krusty Krab. He apparently beat up Loudward and possibly gave him a concussion. He is said to have died from cancer, although SpongeBob later said they just "found him dead in his tank." On July 3rd 2023, he was added to ai sponge, he was usually seen inside the Krusty Krab or near The Bride of Plankton, . Mr. Krabs said that he was always been a good customer of the Krusty Krab. He wore contact lenses but he lost one. According to Sandy, He has had 7 strokes. His birthdate is unknown.
2006 Honda Civic: A car whose name Loudward tended to repeat with no apparent reason for doing so. Now there’s a reason - he and SpongeBob owned one. If a 2006 Honda Civic car was mentioned, it will fall from the sky near where the characters are talking. Loudward also married a 2006 Honda Civic and had a baby car with one.
Boat Fishes: Were two fishes in a boat (or a 2007 Hyundai Elantra) named Jack and Henry, They spawned every couple minutes on the road going straight forward. They could cause Death if one of the characters get caught in the boat.
There is a rare chance that the car can get flung away when hitting SpongeBob or Patrick.
Stockton Rush: An unseen character who was the Co-founder and CEO of OceanGate. His Titan Submersible was seen sunken and was half-buried outside The Chum Bucket, which Plankton later dug out for unknown reasons. He was born on March 31, 1963.
SlendyBob (Also known as Dried SpongeBob): SlendyBob appeared behind a tree next to Squidward's House, The Titan Submersible and the Street where the boat was. Not much is known about this character. He was barely mentioned or referenced throughout the streams. It is unknown if the characters could even see him.
SpongeBob's Front Door: Was the front door to SpongeBob's house and a major character in the series. He was apparently sentient though he couldn't speak.
Horse: Horse was a main character that was never seen. Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob, Loudward, and other characters could be seen talking to him, or about him. When this happened, the chat spamed “schizo” in response, due to the fact that it appears that they are talking to themselves. Eventually, horse ended up tragically dying of Ligma in the Krusty Krab. They apparently dumped his body in a bucket of cum. He was eventually brought back to life and lived in Bikini Bottom, working as Sandy's assistant.
John F. Kennedy: An unseen supporting character in the show. He was very hated by SpongeBob and claimed to assassinated him. He also seemed to play a vital role in the lore since he was always bought up in conspiracies and theories. He apparently had a lot of connection to SpongeBob's past.
Shrek: A new character from the new alpha stream. He is seen inside a 2006 Honda Civic (not to be confused with Loudward's wife) outside the Krusty Krab. He is also later revealed to be the French Narrator.
Mao Zedong: A Chinese dictator who was Mr. Krab's adoptive father who raised him in China. SpongeBob was a big fan of him and wanted him to come to the city.
Minor/Background Characters[]
Professor Carr: Carr was a character that had been mentioned throughout the series. He is confirmed to have created the Krabby Patty, and he was also the founder of the Krusty Krab. He worked in an unnamed university within bikini bottom. He was known for giving out copious amounts of pop, quizzes and tests.
Green Alien (Juan): Not much is known about this green invader. (A very mysterious character only mentioned twice)
Pot Friend: mentioned by Patrick, was his best friend.
Peggy: mentioned by Patrick, cooked him dinner and gave him backrubs, but the other day she Peg-ed him, where she tied Patrick with A rope and spanked him with a wooden spatula.
Ambatukam: Mentioned numerous times to be a deceased friend of Patrick, Mr. Krabs claims he was a crab. He was apparently murdered.
Nina and Peppah: SpongeBob told Patrick that Nina and Peppah were fish that were their friends and they are now gone.
Atrick: mentioned by Squidward, mostly a typo of Patrick, Not much is known about this character.
Squilliam: Squidward's rich cousin, he was wealthy and a successful businessman, he had a big house and a fancy car, and he apparently always rubbed it on SpongeBob and Patrick's faces.
Bobby: Mentioned by Mr. Krabs, he was the best friend of Krabs in the navy. When they were on a ship together during a storm, the ghosts came for him. They dragged him below deck, and disappeared.
Meep: Instead of looking for a job at the Krusty Krab, he wanted to fight SpongeBob.
Winnie The Pooh: He was the president of China, as mentioned by SpongeBob.
Walter White: He was Patrick's friend and the President of the United States. He is known to have invented fridges. Patrick was also suspicious of Mr. White being evil.
Freddy: Mr. Krabs' long lost cousin who was mentioned several times. He was a fan of FNaF (Hence his name)
Patrick's Little Brother: "Jubilant Jade Green Johnson", otherwise known as Patrick's little brother was an unseen character. Patrick apparently punched him once.
Golden Freddy: A friend of Patrick and Loudward. Loudward sometimes made impressions based on him, usually having a stroke in the process. He liked Markiplier and Krabby Patties.
Markiplier: A frequently mentioned character in later streams. He appeared to have an OnlyFans which was super successful. This caused Mr. Krabs to make his OnlyFans and wanted to be successful like him.
Jumbo Josh Fan: A fish/alien character that only appeared once. He was kicked out of the city by Loudward for being annoying and cringey.
Giant Freddy Fazbear: Was an animatronic and a mentioned character in ai_sponge. Mr. Krabs first mentioned that the restaurant, "Giant Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place" was running him out of business. Sandy then told SpongeBob and others that giant Freddy Fazbear had fell on the city and only Gary survived.
Hank Schrader: He was a man who asked SpongeBob to cook meth for his meth empire. SpongeBob says he's a jerk. He almost killed Spongebob in the Meth Arc.
Spongebob tells Patrick about a 17 foot long Giant Squid in the Rhode Island Aquarium.
Narrator (AKA Mr. French Narrator Guy): Sometimes appearing, he sometimes broke the fourth wall and talked to the characters, telling him about their day. In the unofficial alpha stream, his identity is later revealed to be Shrek inside a 2006 Honda Civic.
Viewers were also able to donate[note 1] to appear as a fish in the background, with a custom name and a message accompanying it. This was temporarily discontinued following the channel receiving a copyright claim and later moving accounts, though it was soon brought back. The feature was removed once again by the time ai_sponge was coming to an end from July 22 to July 25. The background fish spawned in eight different locations:

> Our story begins with nothing but a cold void only to be awoken to a dumb ai SpongeBob who knows nothing but simple tasks like walking and saying things he was told.
> Born into a new world: The gods lend SpongeBob friends and the town become fun cheery and full of life but little did our friends in bikini bottom know this is where all the lore begins.
> Sentience: Once SpongeBob began to learn he started getting smarter alongside his friends and soon they became sentient.
> Squidward Questions: Squidward learns about the universe and starts questioning it but doesn't realize the heat death yet while Patrick and SpongeBob are confused at his rambling.
> Loudward Is Born: After being pushed to the brink of insanity by the crushing weight of being sentient Squidward starts to yell "AUGUST 12 2036. THE HEAT DEATH OF THE UNIVERSE" Repeating this sentence over and over until his voice becomes permanently loud. This was later confirmed afterwards by SpongeBob that the universe was going to be cold revived on August 13th.

Events/Situations that may happen unintentionally or happen by some occasions or specific things the characters say.
The characters at times may mumble random nonsense mid conversation therefore increasing the time of the conversation more than usual, the chat usually calls it a "Stroke" since the characters in-universe are not very mentally or physically stable in some occasions.
An item may spawn in a character's hand if they say a specific keyword, such as a knife spawning in one's hand if they mention "Murder" or "Knife", a GameCube controller spawning in one's hand if they mention "Gaming" or "Game", a book spawning in one's hand of they mention "Read" or "Book", and a ball spawning in one's hand after also mentioning "Game" or "Ball".
A boat (or a 2007 Hyundai Elantra) occasionally spawns after each " A few ____ later" message box. usually at the start or mid conversation, sometimes the characters may be caught in the boat's way and be flung/pushed through the road and therefore fall or be pushed farther from the screen.
The camera angle at times may break/change directions and move to other places while other characters are talking, for example zooming onto Sandy's dome while Patrick is speaking or zooming onto the ground while Spongebob is speaking.
The characters may move in unusual ways, like sliding through the ground or doing flips in the air, could be caused by the ball the characters are holding or by doing it by completely randomness.
The sky will turn pitch black when a character says "dark" or "night" or if they mention gazing at the stars/skynight. This is accompanied by the chat saying "THE FOG IS COMING" possibly due to the sky being unnaturally dark, instead of showing stars in the distance; it may also feel eerie. Additionally, it begins raining if a character says "rain" or any word that ends with it (such as "train" or "brain").
If a character is breaking the fourth wall, it will be accompanied by the chat saying "PULL THE PLUG".
If the camera starts to spin rapidly like it is flying in a circle, it will be accompanied by the chat saying "THE WORLD REVOLVING" or quotes said by the popular character from Deltarune named Jevil.
If a character starts to sing, it will sometimes show the character on a stage, and plays the music that they want to sing, after the music is over, a crowd sfx plays.
Whenever they say "Krabby patty" or something like that, a krabby patty spawns in their hand.
Whenever they say "Skate" an Skateboard spawns in their hand.

A fourth AI Sponge channel started streaming on June 15, 2023, using an account created on February 15, 2015. It was also short-lived and received a fourth copyright claim on June 16.

A channel owned by one of ai_sponge's stream and Discord managers, Mareeq, became the fifth YouTube channel to host the AI Sponge stream. It began streaming on June 18, 2023. However, the channel was terminated on June 20 for supposedly violating YouTube's impersonation policy.

A channel owned by Dudsy, became the sixth YouTube channel to host the AI Sponge stream. It began streaming on July 3, 2023. However, the channel was moved and reverted back to it's former account on July.
This channel used to host the AI_SouthPark stream, but became the seventh known YouTube channel to host the AI Sponge stream. It began streaming on July 3, 2023. However, the channel was moved and reverted back to it's former account on July. This channel later hosted a new under developmet Ai_sponge stream made from fakeyou.com but is still in early stages of developmet and is very buggy.

Shortly after ai_sponge received their first copyright claim on June 7, 2023, admins on the official Discord server began encouraging members to post #FreeAISponge, as they claim that the channel's content was allowed under fair use.[8]
In the following days after the end of the series, Many Ai_sponge clips and compilations are slowly being removed alongside the channels that uploaded them, resulting in Ai_sponge being partially Lost Media and the surviving content being uploaded to the Internet Archive.
After the end of the series, Only around 5-20% of Ai_sponge streams and content were ever fully archived, with the remaining being Lost Media.
Throughout the time Ai_sponge has been running, due to technical errors, there have been few episode with only one line called "Liners".
This is the least common event in AI Sponge history.
On May 26, 2023, There was once a stream where SpongeBob's voice glitched out, causing the stream to go silent except for the background music for over 6 hours. The incident is often called the "Wow! That was a long time ago. What was it like?" Incident, as that was the last thing said.
Silent episodes were rare episodes where the characters say absolutely nothing. Believed to be technical errors.
An event called "The Chimp Event" was an event mentioned in an episode during the June 19th stream. It is an event where groups of chimps attack Bikini Bottom for apparently no reason, Every main character teams up and gathers at the Krusty Krab during this event to defeat the chimps. No footage currently exists of it and is considered Lost Media.
In one episode of Ai_sponge, SpongeBob mused about Loudward's depressed state of mind. He stated that he did not understand why Loudward felt this way, but that it may be connected to when he, SpongeBob, he literally died (model removed) for three days (episodes) and was thereafter revived. No footage of this currently exists and is also considered lost media.
