Alex Yard (Born October 12th)[2] is an American YouTuber known for his Sonic the Hedgehog music theory videos and general video game discussions.[3]
History[]
Alex uploaded the first video to his YouTube channel on the same day as he created it.[4] Named "Ask Ulillillia Things: Sushi Go", it was the first in a series of nine videos he released from September 2016 to February 2017, where he talked to (previously fellow YouTuber Ulillillia) about a variety of things, such as his book,[5] his dreams,[6] even his life's wish list.[7] All the episodes were filmed on September 19, 2016, in Boston, Massachusetts.[8] The last video on Alex's channel featuring Ulillillia was released May 27, 2017, where they discussed his game in development, Platform Masters.[9]
Content[]
Alex has two channels. He makes exclusively the same style of content on Alex Yard,[3] with more commentaries about various subjects on Alex Yard Adventure.[10]
Music Theory[]
Alex's music theories about the Sonic the Hedgehog soundtracks are is his most popular videos, and have been the continued style of content on his main channel ever since he released "Sonic 3's Lava Reef: Music Theory" on March 17, 2020.[11] This started his explorations of popular video game soundtracks, analysing the features of note arrangements, interesting chordal progression, and anything he finds fascinating about different scores.[12] Despite being thorough and in-depth music analyses, the videos are also designed to be understandable to a wide audience, being why his most popular individual video is "Sonic 3's Flying Battery: Music Theory", with over 300k views.[13]
Despite the majority of these videos being focused on Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Alex has made more music theories on other gaming franchises, such as Super Mario 64,[14] Ocarina of Time,[15] Donkey Kong Country 2,[16] Banjo-Kazooie,[17] Spyro the Dragon[18] & Undertale.[19] He also made more Sonic focused music theories on Sonic CD,[20] Sonic Frontiers,[21] Knuckles Chaotix,[22] Sonic Superstars,[23] Sonic Unleashed,[24] and most recently Sonic Mania.[25]
Alex Yard Adventure[]
On this channel, Alex makes videos about different gaming subjects.[26] They can sometimes be general analyses[27] or explanations,[28] and usually "debunking" videos, where he presents an intentionally controversial or provocative thesis about a certain topic, defending his point of view.[29] His most popular video is a similar concept to this, - called "You Have Only Experienced 25% of Sonic 3" - where he presented an argument about how you can play Sonic 3 in different ways, disputing the validity of people's opinions who haven't had a full gameplay experience because of this.[30]
Controversy & Criticism[]
Tee Lopes[]
On March 11, 2025, Alex Yard created a video named "Why Sonic Mania Music Is So AMAZING!", based around the game Sonic Mania.[25] The game's composer, Tee Lopes, responded in the comments saying that he appreciated the video.[31] However, Alex (seemingly unprovoked) responded in a very passive-aggressive manner towards him, prompting concern from Tee Lopes.[32] This comment was met with heavy backlash from users, criticizing Alex for responding in such a way. He responded in another comment doubling down and not apologizing, which was met with even more backlash.[33] On March 17, 2025, he made an hour long video on his other channel, sticking with his claims that Tee Lopes had "hostile immaturity",[34] and in a community post, he stated that Tee Lopes had "hostile confrontational messages", which was what prompted him to reply to Tee Lopes.[35]
