Alexandra Ashley Hughes (born July 31, 1985 (1985-07-31) [age 39]), known by her stage name Allie X (formerly Allie Hughes), is a Canadian singer, songwriter and visual artist.[1]

Career[]

Career beginnings[]

Around 2006, Allie began performing jazz, electronic, indie pop, and indie rock in Toronto under the stage name Allie Hughes. She recorded the 10-track album Waiting for the Prize while she was a college student, and it was released in 2006.

She participated in the 2008 episode of How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? on CBC Television[2]. , a Canadian adaptation of the British television series of the same name that aired on BBC One in 2006[3][4]. The Sound of Music's "My Favorite Things" and Björk's "It's Oh So Quiet" were among the songs she sang, but she was eliminated from the competition after two weeks. Other Canadian films and television shows from that era that she has appeared in as an actor include The Boys in the Photograph, King, Being Erica, and Instant Star. She has also contributed music to Rookie Blue, Saving Hope, and Love Me.

She began work on her first studio album in June 2009, working with Adam King of Run With Kittens[5], Dave Newfeld of Broken Social Scene, and Leon Taheny. The Hard Way album was supposed to be released in the fall of 2010, but it was postponed to 2011 and is still not available.[6]

CollXtion I[]

Allie made the decision to relocate to Los Angeles in July 2013 in order to pursue a full-time career as a songwriter. She continued to develop her solo material despite this. She spent time studying sound production and design because she wasn't happy with her sound. She changed her name to Allie X and started working with producers Billboard and Cirkut that she had met while living in Los Angeles.

Hughes released "Catch," her first song under the Allie X moniker, at the beginning of 2014. On Twitter, Katy Perry tweeted about the song and referred to it as her "spring jam."[7] The Canadian Hot 100 also featured "Catch," which peaked at number 55. Later, "Catch" was re-released as an EP in November 2015 with new songs.

Allie released two additional singles, "Prime" and "Bitch," on March 18 and April 6, 2014, respectively, before CollXtion I, her debut extended play. Then, on April 7, 2015, CollXtion I was made released in Canada, with the worldwide release being delayed until April 21.

CollXtion II[]

Old Habits Die Hard, a song that Hughes made available for free download in February 2016 was initially intended to be a non-album single. In order to narrow down the songs her fans wanted to hear on CollXtion II, Hughes announced a project called CollXtion II: Ʉnsolved on May 13, 2016, which saw her release a number of demos and songs on Spotify over the course of the summer. This project ended on November 6, 2016.

Allie started to tease CollXtion II in February 2017, and on February 23, the official release date—June 9—was revealed. The first single from Allie's upcoming album, "Paper Love," was released on April 28, 2017. "Need You" was released on May 26, 2017.

Super Sunset[]

The first single from Allie's then-untitled second studio album, "Focus," was released on June 1; "Not So Bad in LA," the second single, was released on July 13. The following Monday, Allie announced the release of her extended play, Super Sunset, and a four-date promotional tour dubbed "The Super Sunset Xperience." A different version of Hughes' previously released album Super Sunset, titled Super Sunset Analog, was made available on December 25.

Allie debuted "Fresh Laundry" on September 26, 2019, along with a music video for her upcoming, as-yet-untitled album. She also went on Reddit to answer questions about the album.[8]

On October 17, "Rings a Bell" was played in its place. The third single, "Regulars," was made public on November 8. The fourth single, "Love Me Wrong," a joint effort with Troye Sivan, was made available on December 6. Through her social media accounts, Allie revealed the pre-order, cover art, and title of her forthcoming album, Cape God, on December 16. In July 2021, Hughes released a single with drag queen Violet Chachki, "Mistress Violet", produced by French producer Lecomte De Brégeot and written by Allie.

Nearly the entire album was written and produced by Allie X in the four years that followed the release of "Cape God." The concept of identity is central to the album's title, cover, and music videos.[9] The album features notable singles such as "Black Eye," "Girl with No Face," "Off with Her Tits," and "Weird World."

Critics have acclaimed the album, with an average score of 85/100 on Metacritic, indicating “universal acclaim”.[10][11]
