Android is a mobile operating system developed for touchscreen devices like smartphones and tablets, utilizing a modified version of the Linux kernel and open-source software.

History[]

Android Inc. was founded in Palo Alto, California in October 2003 by Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White.[2][3]

In 2019, Huawei, a tech firm, became involved in the trade war between China and the US over Android.[4][5] As a result, Huawei announced the creation of Harmony OS, an alternative operating system to Android,[6] and filed for intellectual property rights globally. Under these sanctions, Huawei plans to replace Android in 2022 with Harmony OS,[7] which was originally designed for internet of things devices.[8][9][10]

Late 2021 saw some users struggling to access emergency services due to a combination of Android and Microsoft Teams app bugs,[11][12] which both companies have since issued updates to address.[13]

Google acquisition[]

In 2005, Rubin negotiated deals with Samsung and HTC,[14] leading to Google's acquisition of the company in July for at least $50 million,[15][16] which was considered Google's "best deal ever" by then-vice president of corporate development David Lawee in 2010.

Trivia[]

  • The Android mascot is a green robot named "Bugdroid" by Google's team.[17] In 2024, the official name was revealed as "The Bot" in a Google blog post.[18][19]
  • Irina Blok, a former Google graphic designer, independently developed the Android icon, despite initial reports suggesting she was tasked with creating it, confirming in an interview that she made it open source.[20]
