The Associated Press, initialized as AP (formerly known as New York Associated Press, abbreviated as NYAP), is an American news agency that was founded in 1846 by five New York City newspapers after a formation.

The Associated Press was formed by a few daily newspapers in New York City to share the cost of transmitting news of the Mexican-American war. Moses Yale Beach organized the agency along with the five previous newspapers mentioned. It was originally known as the New York Associated Press, abbreviated as NYAP, facing competition towards the Western Associated Press, criticizing its news and price settings.
