Avatar is an American epic science fiction media franchise created by James Cameron.

History[]

2000s; Release of Avatar[]

The initial installment of the series, Avatar, was released on December 18, 2009.[1]

2010s; Development of Avatar: The Way of Water[]

In 2006, James Cameron announced plans for two sequels to Avatar,[2] which were confirmed in 2010 due to the film's widespread success.[3]

In April 2017, a new release date for Avatar: The Way of Water was announced for December 18, 2020.[4] However, due to the announcement of the three upcoming Star Wars films in May 2019,[5] the release date was delayed to December 17, 2021.[6] The COVID-19 pandemic further deferred the release date to December 16, 2022.[7]

2020s; Release of Avatar: The Way of Water and the Avatar sequels[]

Avatar: The Way of Water[]

After the film faced multiple delays, Avatar: The Way of Water premiered in London on December 6, 2022,[8] and was released in the United States on December 16.[9]

Avatar: Fire and Ash[]

Avatar: Fire and Ash's theatrical release has been postponed nine times, with the latest one scheduled for August 9, 2024.[10] The film is scheduled to release on December 19, 2025.[11]

Avatar 4[]

Avatar 4's theatrical release has been postponed nine times, with the latest one scheduled for June 13, 2023. The film is scheduled to release on December 21, 2029.[12]

Avatar 5[]

Avatar 5 is scheduled to release on December 19, 2031, which will be the final film in the franchise.[11]
