BBC America is an American basic cable network that is jointly owned by BBC Studios (50.01%) and AMC Networks (49.99%).[1]
History[]
1990s[]
BBC America, launched on March 29, 1998, presented a mix of comedy, drama, and lifestyle programs from BBC Television and other British broadcasters. Initially, it focused on repeats of popular shows like Changing Rooms and Ground Force. The channel aimed to establish a niche for non-British viewers, with most newer programs appearing as part of its evening schedule.
2000s[]
In 2003, BBC America removed the British soap opera EastEnders due to low ratings, causing viewer complaints and attracting media attention.[2][3][4]
2010s[]
In 2014, AMC Networks bought a 49.9% equity stake in BBC America for $200 million, replacing Discovery Communications as its managing partner.
2020s[]
On Sunday, April 25, 2021, BBC America unveiled a redesigned logo and tagline – "Brit-ish".[5]
On May 1, 2022, BBC America changed it's logo.
Channel[]
On April 27, 2009, BBC America created their YouTube channel. The first video was uploaded on May 29, 2009, titled "Opening a strange portal to another world - Primeval - BBC America". BBC America usually uploads videos about their cable network.[6]
