BLACKPINK, (commonly stylized as BLΛƆKPIИK), is a K-pop girl group originating from Seoul, South Korea. It is formed by Korean entertainment company, YG Entertainment, and the group officially debuted on August 8th, 2016. The K-pop act consists of members Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa. The fans are known as "Blinks", a combination of the group name (BL)ACK P(INK).

History[]

Pre-debut[]

Blackpink formed after YG Entertainment held worldwide tryouts for preteen or teenage recruits to form a new girl group after launching its first major one, 2NE1. BLACKPINK's debut was announced in November 2011 by YG Entertainment, with a group of at least seven members.[1] Despite rumors of a delayed debut,[2] the group was confirmed in July 2016 after years of competition. Jang Hanna and Moon Sua, who were initially considered as potential members, were not included in the lineup.[3] The delay was due to the intense competition for the members.[4]

On June 1, 2016, Jennie was the first member of the group to be revealed.[5] In 2010, she joined YG Entertainment as a trainee after returning from New Zealand.[6] She was first introduced to the public in 2012 through a photo on the company's website.[7]

On June 8, 2016, Lisa was revealed as the second member of the new girl group.[8] In May 2012, she was introduced through a YouTube video titled "Who's that girl?" on YG Entertainment's platform.[9]

On June 15, 2016, Jisoo was revealed as the third member of the new group. In July 2011, she joined YG Entertainment as a trainee and made appearances in advertisements and music videos before her debut.

On June 22, 2016, Rosé was revealed as the final member.

Formation[]

YG Entertainment announced on June 29 that the new girl group, Blackpink, will have four members instead of the originally planned nine, and will be officially named.[10]

BLACKPINK released their first dance practice video on July 6, gaining public attention.[11] On July 29, YG Entertainment confirmed that Blackpink's debut would be on August 8, 2016.[12]

Debut[]

BLACKPINK, the first girl group to debut under YG Entertainment in seven years,[13] released their debut single album, Square One, on August 8, 2016. The group charted at number one and two on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart, making them the fastest act to achieve such a feat.[14]
