Bailey Brooke Sarian (born: November 26, 1988citation needed] is an American True Crime YouTuber known for her video series and podcasts Murder, Mystery & Makeup and Dark History.[citation needed] She is considered to have been the founder of the “true crime makeup” genre of YouTube videos.[citation needed]
)[Bailey is one of the largest true crime YouTubers on the platform, and the largest female true crime YouTuber.[citation needed] The channel currently sits at more than 7 million subscribers by 2023.[citation needed]
Biography[]
Prior to creating her YouTube content, Bailey worked as a social media creator with cosmetics subscription service IPSY,[1] and as an employee for the brands Sephora and Urban Decay.[2][3] Bailey currently lives in Los Angeles.[3] She has two sisters called Madison and Ashley.[4] Bailey is a middle child.[5] Her mother, named Cindy Sarian,[4] was a 911 dispatcher[2] who sometimes brought young Bailey with her to work, which piqued her interest in the true crime genre. Bailey is a Christian.[4]
Bailey is of Armenian descent as she discloses in some of her videos.Citation Needed Bailey once had a partner called Fernando Valdez (nicknamed Fern) who works as a street artist and tattoo artist.[6] The pair met on December 13, 2013 (Friday the 13th)Citation Needed and got engaged in 2016 after three years together.[4] Bailey and Fernando broke up in January 2022.Citation Needed She has disclosed in a Q&A upload on her YouTube that she has never married and has no children.Citation Needed Bailey formerly has a dog named Saint, which now stays with her ex-partner, Fernando.[4] Bailey revealed how she got D- grades before for History back in school.[7]
Bailey recalled how she once watched a televised case of JonBenét Ramsey during her childhood, it was one of the earliest moments that pivoted her into making true crime videos. The 2018 case of Chris Watts was what ultimately led her into starting her YouTube series Murder, Mystery & Makeup since 2019.[8]
Career[]
Bailey began her YouTube channel in 2013 as a traditional makeup channel, producing makeup tutorials and reviews.[9][3] She first uploaded on September 13, 2013 with a makeup tutorial titled My foundation, contour, highlight. The video currently sits at 385 thousand views.
In January 2019, she released her first episode of her series Murder, Mystery & Makeup, in which she discussed the Watts family murders whilst applying makeup.[9][10] In 2020, fuelled by increased consumption of online content due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she went from 780 thousand subscribers in March to 3.5 million by the end of the year.[11] Bailey's most popular video is Jeffrey Dahmer. Inside His Messed Up Mind & How He Almost Got Away which garnered 25 million views. The series currently has more than 130 episodes.
In June 2021, Bailey debuted her podcast Dark History, with the first episode titled The DuPont Chemical Poisoning which garnered more than 3.5 million views. Dark History is also the second series of hers, the videos document strange and unusual stories throughout history. The subjects or topics primarily relate to the United States or Americans, but also center around others as well like Soviet Russia and Europe. The most popular episode of Bailey's Dark History podcast is A Church vs. The Feds: Who Shot First?? The WACO Siege, which sits at more than 4 million views. The series currently has more than 90 episodes.
Career Outside YouTube[]
In May 2021, Bailey Sarian was featured for an online interview by The Kelly Clarkson Show,[12] a TV variety talk show.
In June 2021, Bailey's Dark History podcast expanded outside YouTube; the podcast is also an AudioBoom original podcast and is co-produced by WheelHouse Productions. Video versions of the podcast filmed in Los Angeles are produced by Wheelhouse DNA and released on her YouTube channel the day following their AudioBoom release.[1][13] She has also watched mystery movies while applying makeup for the official Netflix YouTube channel.[11] Bailey's AudioBoom original podcasts are also available on alternate, affiliated websites like Spotify, Amazon and Apple.
In July 2021, Bailey was featured in an episode of magazine company Cosmopolitan's web series "Expensive Taste Test".[14]
To branch out to a wider audience, Bailey's videos and podcasts are translated into Spanish and posted on her affiliated Facebook page named Bailey Sarian en Español.
Reception[]
In 2020, YouTube ranked Bailey amongst the top breakout creators of the year.[15] She was also presented with a Creator Honor Award by NikkieTutorials at the 10th Streamy Awards, and was nominated for the Beauty subject award.[16] At the 11th Streamy Awards, Bailey won the Beauty subject award.[17] She was also nominated for Makeup Influencer of the Year at the 2021 USA Today American Influencer Awards.[18]
Around December 2020, Bailey was acknowledged by singer and businesswoman Selena Gomez for using Rare Beauty (Gomez’s cosmetics brand) products in her videos since the brand’s launch. Gomez personally filmed a video praising her true crime and makeup videos.[19]
In June 2021, Bailey is featured in the front cover of LA Weekly magazine's monthly issue.[20][21] An online version of the magazine is also published, detailing Bailey's online career and her biography.[1]
In November 2021, The Guardian included Murder, Mystery & Makeup in a list of the best podcasts of the week, describing the series as reaching an "innovative new niche".[22] It has also been listed as one of the best true crime podcasts on Spotify by The Scotsman.[23] Dark History was listed as one of the best new podcasts of 2021 by publications such as the Las Vegas Weekly,[24] Elle Australia,[25] and Variety,[26] and was the ninth top new show of the year on Apple Podcasts.[27] It was also nominated for Show of the Year[28] and won Podcast of the Year at the 11th Streamy Awards.[17]
In 2022, Bailey was nominated for the 12th Streamy Awards under the Beauty subject award.[29]
Controversy[]
A couple of YouTubers like Pinely,[30] iNabber,[31] Ada on Demand[32] and Nicole Rafiee[33], as well as news tabloids like The Daily Beast[10] have criticized or commented on Bailey Sarian (and other YouTubers in the True Crime genre) for monetizing and exploiting the tragedies of victims and families who are involved in the crimes.
When asked if she is contacted by relatives of victims that she made videos on, Bailey responded how she was contacted before on two separate occasions. First one is an anonymous relative who sought Bailey to arrange a visit if she’s in town. Bailey described how the relative was friendly and gave positive feedback on her video of the related victim, and would take them up on their offer for a meeting. The other one was another anonymous person who contacted Bailey over upsetting remarks in the video’s comment section which targetted a mentioned individual who is not involved in the crime. Bailey ultimately removed the video.[8]
Philanthropy[]
In late May 2020, Bailey filmed a monetised video where the advertising revenue is donated to various organisations, fundraisers and petitions supporting the Black Lives Matter movement. Several of such are in support of George Floyd in particular.[34]
In a 2021 Reddit AMA, Bailey listed several organisations and fundraisers she did philanthropy for. Being of Armenian descent, Bailey supported the Armenia Fund, a humanitarian organisation supporting Armenia and Artsakh. Others include those supporting minority racial groups like National Urban League, MIGIZI, Black Visions Collective, Public Justice Centre, MOODI. Tailoring to her YouTube career in true crime, Bailey did philanthropic works related to United States’s legal system, criminal justice system and jurisdiction, such as Innocence Project, Equal Justice Initiative, Southern Center for Human Rights, American Civil Liberties Union and Witness To Innocence.[35]
