Baltimore Ravens is an American YouTube channel and a NFL football team located in Baltimore, Maryland.[1]
History[]
The Baltimore Ravens were established in 1996 after Art Modell announced plans in 1995 to relocate the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore, Maryland.[2] While controversial in Cleveland, the move brought the NFL back to Baltimore for the first time since 1983, when the Baltimore Colts left for Indianapolis under similar circumstances. The Browns’ branding and records were left in Cleveland as part of a settlement between the city and the NFL; they resumed play as a new team in 1999.
The name "Ravens" was inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's poem The Raven.[3] Chosen in a fan contest that drew 33,288 voters, the allusion honors Poe who spent the early part of his career in Baltimore and is buried there.[4] As The Baltimore Sun reported at the time, fans also "liked the tie-in with the other birds in town, the Orioles, and found it easy to visualize a tough, menacing black bird". Edgar Allan Poe also had distant relatives who played football for the Princeton Tigers in the 1880s through the early 1900s.[5]
The Ravens played their first two seasons at the old Baltimore Memorial Stadium, previously used by the Colts and Orioles. In 1998, the team moved into a brand new stadium, which is now known as M&T Bank Stadium. Located just south of Oriole Park at Camden Yards, M&T Bank Stadium was built on the former site of a piano factory and is considered one of the top-tier NFL venues.[6]
The Ravens won their first Super Bowl over the New York Giants in the 2000 season. Around this time, Baltimore native Steve Bisciotti acquired minority ownership of the team. In 2004, Bisciotti brought the team outright from Modell.[7]
In 2007, Bisciotti fired Ravens head coach Brian Billick and replaced him with John Harbaugh - who remains the head coach to this day. With Bisciotti and Harbaugh at the helm, the Ravens won their second Super Bowl in the 2012 season over the San Francisco 49ers. The Ravens have continued their success in the following seasons, resulting in several more playoff berths.
