The Besta deild karla (lit. 'Men's Best Division') is the top level men's football league in Iceland.[1]

History[]

Early years[]

The competition was founded in 1912 as the Icelandic Championship.[2] The first season would begin in the same year, where Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur (KR) would win, defeating Knattspyrnufélagið Fram 3–2.[3]

Knattspyrnufélagið Fram then would win in 1913 and 1914 because it was the only participant.[3]

From April 27, 2009 to 2022, the league had an active agreement with Ölgerðin, the Icelandic franchisee for Pepsi. From 2019 to 2021, the league was known as Pepsi Max deildin (The Pepsi Max League).[4][5] In February 2022, it was rebranded as Besta deild karla.[6]

Trivia[]

  • By end of season 2022–23, UEFA ranked the league No. 48 in Europe.[7]
  • Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur (KR) has the most titles, with 27.[citation needed]
  • Tryggvi Guðmundsson has scored the most goals, with 131.[8]
