Bizarre Beasts is a channel hosted by Hank Green and Sarah Suta, that uploads videos about strange animal species. It started as a series on the Vlogbrothers channel, where Hank uploaded an episode each month for a year. It is part of the Complexly network of YouTube channels, which also includes SciShow.

History[]

Vlogbrothers[]

Bizarre Beasts was first announced on July 15, 2019, and continued as a monthly series on the Vlogbrothers channel. The first video was about the Mola Mola.[1]

List of animals covered[]

The first thirteen videos can be found in this playlist.

  • Ocean Sunfish (Mola mola)
  • Dumbo Octopus
  • Citheronia regalis (a species of caterpillar/moth)
  • Frogmouths (a bird species)
  • Pallas' Cat
  • Prehensile-Tailed Porcupines
  • Horses
  • Nine banded armadillos
  • Feather Stars
  • Handfish (a species of anglerfish)
  • Hammerheaded bats
  • Lyall’s Wren
  • Portuguese Man o' War

Independence[]

Bizarre Beasts became an independent channel on May 5, 2020. It was announced on the Vlogbrothers channel on June 6, 2020, in a video about the Portuguese Man o' War titled You Might as Well Swim! New episodes go up the first Friday of every month.

Pin club[]

For each animal, a pin was released to members of the pin club. This club is open to a limited number of members. [2] This is so they do not over-produce pins and create unnecessary waste.[3] Profits from the pin club go to support the Nerdfighteria community’s efforts to decrease maternal mortality in Sierra Leone. [4] Subscriptions are open for about 72 hours after a new video goes live. New subscribers receive their first pin in the middle of the month, and then keep getting pins whenever a new video goes up.[5] There are three versions of every pin.[6] Each pin also comes with a card that contains facts about that animal.[7]
