The South American football confederation (CONMEBOL or CSF) is an continental governing body of football in South America (apart from Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana) and it is one of FIFA's six continental confederations.

The World Cup qualifiers of CONMEBOL are renowned for their challenging round-robin system, top national teams, leveling of weaker teams, climate and geographic conditions, strong home stands, and passionate supporters, making them the "toughest qualifiers in the world."[1][2]

History[]

In 1916, the first South-American Football Championship, later known as the Copa América, was held in Argentina to commemorate the centenary of the Argentine Declaration of Independence. The governing body was founded by Uruguayan Héctor Rivadavia Gómez and ratified by the first Constitutional Congress in Montevideo.

Other South American football associations joined over time, with Venezuela being the last in 1952. Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana are part of CONCACAF, making CONMEBOL the smallest and only fully continental land-based FIFA confederation.
