Channel 4 is a British television broadcaster established in England on November 2, 1982. The channel is commercial but funded through advertisement breaks.

It was originally established to provide a fourth channel in addition to license-funded BBC One and BBC Two and commercial ITV. Later, in 2010, they extended their service into Wales to become a UK-wide broadcaster.

The broadcaster owns three channels on YouTube to reflect the different type of content it offers:

  • Channel 4 is the main channel and is used to upload the majority of content that does not fit into the other channels.
  • Channel 4 News is used exclusively to share news updates.
  • Channel 4 Comedy is used to share clips from the broadcaster's many comedy programmes.

Channel 4 programmes include:

  • First Dates, a reality dating show.[1]
  • Hollyoaks, a soap opera.[2]
  • Hunted, a reality show where the participants ("fugitives") go on the run and are tracked down by hunters.[3]

Channel 4 is known for broadcasting a number of UK comedy classics. This includes:

  • The Inbetweeners, a show about British teenagers and their struggles with relationships.[4]
  • Friday Night Dinner, a show about a British Jewish family and their experiences with dinner.[5]
  • Man Down, a show about a man who hates his job as a teacher and recently broke up with his girlfriend.[6]
  • Peep Show, a point-of-view show about two dysfunctional school friends that share a flat in South London.[7]
  • The IT Crowd, a show about a dysfunctional IT department located in the basement of a multi-million dollar organisation.[8]
  • Green Wing, a show that takes place in a hospital and focuses on the relationships of the doctors and other hospital staff.[9]
