The Chicago Sky are a professional women's basketball team in the WNBA based in Chicago, Illinois, for the Eastern Conference.[1] It is currently one of the 12 teams of the league.
Background[]
The team was founded in 2005 after NBA Commissioner David Stern announced that the WNBA would have a team in Chicago. As a newly integrated team into the league, the Chicago Sky went through an expansion draft that same year (as well as the 2006 WNBA Draft) and would officially begin playing their first season in 2006.[2] Since their introduction to the league, they have made it to the WNBA Finals in 2014 and 2021, losing to The Phoenix Mercury on the first but would win the rematch for the latter.[3][4]
YouTube history[]
Introduction[]
The channel was created on May 12, 2008, and on the same day, "Sylvia Fowles Dunking in TV Shoot" was posted. The video begins with then draft selection of The Chicago Sky Sylvia Fowles dunking a basketball into a basketball net as part of an upcoming (at the time) commercial in 2008. Then it shows her teammate and the 2007 WNBA Rookie of the Year Armintie Price singing a song with Sylvia that began with "My buddy." The video continued with Price appearing to be in a phone call and concluded with other goofy actions. The 2008 commercial can be seen here which introduces Sylivia Fowles who was drafted in the 2008 draft with the second pick by the Sky and promotes the first game for the team in the 2008 season.
New decade[]
In the beginning the channel's content was more directed to outside of the court as it slowly would begin to show inside the court or highlights as early as 2009-2010. In the current age of the channel, game highlights, and press conferences seem to be the main content. Other content features "Cove features", "Mic'd up", "Sky Alumni", "Our Voice", "Homegrown" and many others.
Trivia[]
- NBA Hall of Fame player Dave Cowens was the first head coach for the Chicago Sky. He would lead the Sky to a 5-29 record in the 2006 season, the worst record of out of all 14 (at the time) WNBA teams in that season.[5]
