Hey, everybody! It's Chuggaaconroy!

―Emile at the beginning of almost every single Let's Play video he makes

Emiliano Rodolfo "Emile" Rosales-Birou (born: April 8, 1990 (1990-04-08) [age 35]), better known by his online alias Chuggaaconroy or Chugga for short, is an American YouTuber and one of the pioneers of the Let's Play genre. He launched his channel in 2008, initially focusing on role-playing games (RPGs) like EarthBound, which quickly established his reputation for creating family-friendly, high-production-value content. Over the years, he has built a substantial audience of over a million subscribers, known for his enthusiastic commentary, witty humor, and impressive lung capacity, a recurring gag among his fans. Beyond his solo work, he is also a founding member of the collaborative channel The Runaway Guys, alongside Proton Jon (Claire) and NintendoCapriSun, where they play various multiplayer games and host charity live streams.

What sets Emile apart is his meticulous and informative approach to video game playthroughs, which effectively double as comprehensive walkthroughs. Unlike many content creators who react to games in a first playthrough, Emile researches extensively, aiming for 100% completion and showcasing every side quest, Easter egg, and item possible. His commentary style blends nostalgic personal anecdotes with near-encyclopedic knowledge of the games he plays, many of which are exclusive to Nintendo platforms. This dedication to detail and consistent, regular upload schedule has earned him a loyal fanbase and acclaim for being a reliable, informative, and engaging content creator within the gaming community.

His influence extends beyond his personal channel, inspiring numerous other content creators and fostering a positive community around Nintendo games. Emile's impact is further highlighted by his involvement in charity events and collaborations, as well as his transition into producing in-depth video essays that deconstruct game design. Though he has faced personal and professional challenges, including an online controversy in early 2024 that led to a temporary hiatus and various copyright issues since 2010, his extensive library of over 50 completed Let's Plays and continued return to content creation solidifies his lasting legacy as a significant figure in YouTube's gaming history.

Early life[]

Emiliano Rodolfo Rosales-Birou was born on April 8, 1990 and is a native of Phoenix, Arizona. He is of French and Mexican descent. He had four siblings that died as miscarriages, and almost died himself at six months due to an allergic reaction. Emile has mentioned that he was poor as a child. His mother was featured in one of his videos, "My Mom Guesses the Fighters of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate & More", in 2019.

Emile’s father left his family when Emile was young. In his Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Let’s Play, Emile makes he clear his father was emotionally and physically abusive to Emile with him saying that it caused him to fear for his life when he was very young, and when Emile did finally cut him out of his life his father multiple times tried to gaslight and victim blame Emile to think that he was a terrible person for cutting him out of his life, attempts that failed and only made Emile cutting his father out an easier choice and reaffirms that it was the right decision.

The Pokémon series was a major part of his childhood and introduced him to the RPG genre, and also has a long history with the Paper Mario series. Emile was a member of the EarthBound fan site Starmen.net, where he bonded with other players over the game. Before he discovered Xenoblade Chronicles, EarthBound was his undisputed favorite game of all time. He recounts a deeply personal and emotional connection with the game from a young age.[1][2] Emile became friends with future content creator Stephen Georg (StephenPlays/StephenVlog) in 2005, meeting through Starmen.net.

Career[]

Solo Let's Plays[]

Hey, everybody! It's Chuggaaconroy! I've been making Let's Plays here for quite a while now, and really appreciate the support from every one of you! If you'd like updates on upcoming projects, what's going on with progress of new videos, or what conventions I'll be at, I recommend following me on either Facebook or Twitter. As a side note, I don't mind answering questions on my Twitter, but keep in mind that I'm not always online. Also remember that I don't give out my friend code or answer questions about future projects.

―Emile's channel description

Emile in 2008

Emile in 2008

Emile created his YouTube account on July 26, 2006 under the alias of "Chuggaaconroy". Originating from the chugging sound of a running train, Emile got the name from a random name generator on a Cartoon Planet website; his username was originally "Chugga A. Conroy" before he changed it to "Chuggaaconroy".[3] In 2007, just as the Let's Play format was getting popular, Emile found he really enjoyed watching videos of Ninja Gaiden and Kaizo Mario World by Claire Wheeler (Proton Jon), with Emile later citing Claire as his biggest inspiration for making videos. On March 16, 2008, Emile uploaded his first video, a handheld recorded video of a Super Smash Bros. Brawl replay, entitled "Super Smash Bros. Brawl Boss Very Hard Clear".

On March 26, 2008, Emile began his first Let's Play; EarthBound. He started out doing exclusively RPGs such as EarthBound, Mother 1, Paper Mario, Mother 3, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, but beginning with Super Mario Sunshine, he started doing other genres as well, such as platformers. Emile's Let's Play series of Super Mario Sunshine became by far the most popular of his Let's Plays and helped boost Emile's popularity, alongside several other Let's Plays he released around this time, including his Let's Plays of Pokémon FireRed and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

Emile's channel further grew in popularity as his gameplay videos were often recommended on YouTube's suggestions. Back when video replies were allowed on YouTube, he had a lot of fan interactions then when challenging someone in-video to do certain gameplay content a certain way or better. Many of his earlier videos seem to lack much of his trademark enthusiasm—he's much quieter and speaks in a much less high-pitched, more deadpan voice. In earlier Let's Plays, Emile tended to mash through and talk over story content (dialogue, cutscenes, etc.) while being generally dismissive of what was going on. Emile has cited the 11 minute time limit that YouTube had at the time as the reason for this.

Emile in 2013

Emile in 2013

In 2010, after more than two years at making Let's Plays, Emile became a YouTube Partner, which was unprecedented among Let's Players at the time (multiple others have since become partners), due to the legal "gray area" that showing game footage entails. In July of 2010, Emile was suspended under false copyright claims weeks after fellow Let's Player Timothy Bishop (NintendoCapriSun) also had his account suspended for the same reason.[4] A month later, Emile had his account restored, as did Tim.[5] Let's Plays he released around this time include Pokémon Crystal, Ōkami, Super Luigi Galaxy, Pikmin, Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin 2, and Super Paper Mario, while Ōkamiden was the first Let's Play to feature his iconic Cc logo. After he became a YouTube Partner and could upload longer videos, Emile started reading through dialogue completely, and actually makes an effort to give characters in the games good voices.

Emile in 2021

Emile in 2021

In 2013, Emile became a Let’s Play creator on YouTube as a full-time job[6], and has continued making Let's Plays including Xenoblade Chronicles, Splatoon, Pikmin 3, Pokémon Black & White, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Splatoon 2, Pokémon Black 2 & White 2 and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. He also made two redux Let's Plays, EarthBound in 2018 and Paper Mario in 2023, which contain more background informing than the original Let's Plays. In 2020, Emile began making his Let's Plays more professional and informative, and he also branched out to video essays in 2023. For his channel's tenth anniversary, Emile made a two-hour long video titled "Creating a Let's Play: What You've Taught Me", where he goes over his process for making let's plays. In 2024, Emile commemorated his milestone of having made 50th Let's Plays at that point with an LP of Bowser's Inside Story. His 2025 Let's Play of Kingdom Hearts was the first on his channel not to be played on a Nintendo console, having previously done Let's Plays of Ōkami, Ōkamiden and Chrono Trigger, which were released on other consoles but he chose their respective Nintendo system releases for his Let's Plays.

Video Essays[]

Paper Mario: Sticker Star was the most disappointing thing since online smash brothers. It's downright impressive how this game understands nothing about why people like RPGs and how much it botches being a follow-up to Super Paper Mario, and the worst thing is that this game ushered in a new era of mediocrity that denies the old Paper Mario from continuing. That's what stings so bad years later, this new Paper Mario refuses to go home. It's not just one substandard game, it's an influential bad game that won't stop infecting other better games that had potential. Even if the newer ones are better, they're still held back by terrible decisions that have stuck around for God knows why. And with Mario and Luigi seemingly dead, one of my favorite series of all time is just kind of to sat on while the publisher keeps pretending this is what Paper Mario is. This is going to be kind of long, a multiple parter for sure.

―Emile at the start of his Chugga Sticks It to Sticker Star series

Besides Let's Plays, Emile has made several video essays, including Discardables (2020-2024), Chugga Sticks It to Sticker Star (2022-2023) and Pokémon Moves You've (Probably) Never Heard Of! (2024). In a departure from his usual Let's Plays and the occasional skit, these videos are done in a style that would be more expected on a video game analysis channel.

The inspiration for Discardables came from one of Emile's hobbies besides making videos; collecting Pokémon trading cards. Having begun collecting since 1998, Emile has built up quite an impressive collection of them, having over 400 cards. He stores his cards in custom binders designed by Stephen, with a gold star on the spine meaning one of every card, and diamond stars meaning every version of every card. In July 2020, Emile asked if his fans would be interested in occasional videos about card collecting tips or his stories about it, and got a lot of requests to do it. This resulted in the Discardables series.[7] Emile released the first two videos in 2020, a third in 2022, and a fourth in 2024.

The inspiration for Chugga Sticks It to Sticker Star came from Emile's well-documented history with Paper Mario: Sticker Star, which he referred to as "an exercise in loathing" and Tom Fawkes referred to as "a hate-hate-hate-hate relationship". Like many other critics, Emile found the game disappointing due to its frustrating game design and toned down story, gameplay, and characters. As he was a fan of the first three Paper Mario games and wanted to like this one as well, Emile chose to 100% it, adding to his frustration further. A breakdown of the game mixed with his usual brand of humor, the Chugga Sticks It to Sticker Star series deconstruct and dissect all of the problems that plagued his experience, as well as expanding on his complicated feelings towards the shreds of genuinely good moments that evoke what Paper Mario had been in the past, and his extreme frustration at the numerous deeply flawed design choices that could have been avoided or mitigated. The series started in November 2022 amid his redux LP of Paper Mario, and concluded in November 2023. He also released a separate video containing the entire series in December 2023.

In late July and early August 2024, Emile made a series of video essays which he uploaded daily, including the videos "The Ridiculous Quest for Figurines in Wind Waker", "How Gen III Roaming Legendaries Destroyed My Childhood", "Every Side Game in Kirby's Epic Yarn", "Sonic Colors DS is Different, but GOOD!", "Sonic Colors - Sonic Simulator (Part 3)", "Sonic Colors - Sonic Simulator (Part 4)" and "All of Chuggaaconroy's Pokémon Black 2 & White 2 Bios". He also released the first episode of a potential series titled "Pokémon Moves You've (Probably) Never Heard Of!". These videos served as bonus videos for Let's Plays that previously did not have them. On August 6th 2024, Emile announced that after having released these series of bonus videos, he confirmed that two further bonus videos, Kirby Fighters & Battle Frontier, will happen but he was unsure of when. He also revealed that there were reasons he couldn’t do them at the time, which he said he'd explain later.[8][9][10]

YouTube Shorts[]

Emile began producing YouTube Shorts on his main channel in November 2024, featuring short, memorable clips edited by MonkeyNess. These videos, formatted for mobile viewing, consist of highlights from Emile's extensive archive of long-form Let's Plays, giving new life to popular and humorous moments. For example, early shorts featured fan-favorite clips like his Shiny Koffing or Waterwraith freakouts. However, the content evolved to include more educational segments with interesting development information or lore dives for his Let's Plays, such as his The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess playthrough. While not all fans actively watch the shorts, the format effectively introduces Emile's highlights to a wider, mobile-oriented audience and provides a supplemental form of content for existing viewers.

The Runaway Guys[]

When making a brand new collaborative Let's Play channel, a lot of things need to be done. First of all, you've got to be sure you pick a first game that's sure to bring out the frustration in everybody! The next thing is to make sure that your recording equipment can take the loudness associated with such frustration! Next, you have to think of a clever name for the whole channel.

Emile with Claire Wheeler (Proton Jon) and Timothy Bishop (NintendoCapriSun)

Emile is a founding member of The Runaway Guys, a collab channel with Claire and Tim. The idea for the channel came from Emile and Claire wanting to do collaborative projects, with Tim joining as he was a mutual friend of theirs. Emile is in charge of maintaining the channel, although Claire has made posts and comments for the channel as well. For the first two years, updates usually only occurred every Saturday, but this was changed to Saturday, Tuesday, and Thursday following an announcement on February 8, 2013. Videos for Mario Party games (starting with the third) and Fortune Street were also posted daily (each board beginning on Saturday and continuing every day until its end).

Their first Let's Play premiered on February 5, 2011. The three of them were the only ones participating, but many of their later videos feature additional players. As of 2024, 46 main collab Let's Plays have been produced, along with five side collab Let's Plays and six tournament Let's Plays. Along with their official long-running Let's Plays, they have done one-shot filler Let's Plays (labeled "The Runaway Gaiden"), tournaments featuring multitudes of guest players, and side collab projects that they gradually update and use as filler between regular projects.

Emile with The Runaway Guys at PAX West 2018

On occasion at various conventions, the Runaway Guys have their own panel, called Thrown Controllers, a live game show which focuses on video game trivia and challenges. The event is broadcast on numerous gaming conventions such as PAX, Magfest and Momocon. In its debut at PAX East 2012, two teams took turns answering questions and playing video game challenges, either against each other, solo, or against members of the audience. At PAX Prime 2012, they retooled the game into a single-person quiz show with challenges, similar to the initial concept except for one person at a time, and this is how it has been done since. Many prizes are awarded at these panels, ranging from character pins from Fangamer to (as a grand prize) an actual video game console, such as a Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, or Nintendo Switch. In May of 2018, The Runaway Guys Colosseum was live streamed as a weekend long event to raise money for Direct Relief. This was followed up from 2019 to 2024, all of them once again in benefit of Direct Relief.

The first of the main three Runaway Guys, Emile is usually the best or at least better players of whatever game the group is playing. He is the loudest and most energetic of the three main guys. He also tries to annoy Claire as much as possible and allows for situations where the viewers could laugh at the group's collective suffering. In the Mario Parties (up to Mario Party 4), he played Donkey Kong. In Mario Party 5, he switched to Daisy. In Mario Party 7, he switched again to Toad. In Super Smash Bros, he played Ness. In Mario Kart 64, he played Wario. In the New Super Mario Bros. series, he played Mario, but switched to Yellow Toad in New Super Luigi U. In Kirby's Return to Dreamland, he played Kirby. In Fortune Street, he played Bowser Jr. for the first three boards, then switched back to Donkey Kong starting from Slimenia. In the Tournament Arc of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, he played Lucas. In Mario Power Tennis, he played Bowser Jr. In Mario Kart: Double Dash, he played Toad on Team Streetpassers with MasaeAnela. In the Rayman series, he played Rayman. In Castle Crashers, he played Red Knight. In The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, he played Red Link. In Secret of Mana he played the Boy. In 100% Orange Juice!, initially he played as QP, but later switched to Sumika.

Charitable activities[]

Emile has been a significant participant in various charitable initiatives within the gaming community, primarily through multi-day live-streamed events. As a founding member of the collaborative group The Runaway Guys, he contributed to the The Runaway Guys Colosseum, a series of annual charity marathons held from 2018 to 2024. These events featured gaming challenges and trivia to raise funds for Direct Relief, a humanitarian medical aid organization. Over its lifetime, the Colosseum raised more than $2 million USD, with specific events like the 2021 remote stream raising over $434,000. In January 2025, it was announced that the Colosseum has been officially retired due to scheduling constraints and a preference to conclude the series on a high note.

Earlier in his career, Emile was a frequent collaborator with The Speed Gamers, a group known for thematic gaming marathons. During this period, he performed speedruns for titles such as EarthBound and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door to support various causes. A notable participation occurred during the Mario Marathon in June 2010, which raised over $57,000 for Autism Care Today (ACT Today). It was during this event that Emile publicly revealed his face for the first time by removing a signature silver mask. He also appeared on-camera for other early events, such as the Winter 2009 Pokémon Marathon for Ally's House, which raised approximately $18,000.

His involvement in public charity events was affected by personal controversies in early 2024, leading to a temporary hiatus and a rebranding of the 2024 Colosseum event to Thrown Controllers Colosseum. While he resumed independent content creation later that year, the official retirement of the TRG Colosseum was confirmed in 2025 as the organizers shifted focus to other personal projects.

Collaborations and Guest Appearances[]

Emile has collaborated with several other YouTubers, including several guest stars of The Runaway Guys on their various Let's Plays. He has also made several guest appearances, most notably by making regular appearances on Stephen Georg's vlog channel. Emile was also well known for his work with TheSpeedGamers, and appeared live at their home base for two separate marathons.

Emile at a Speed Gamers event

While he worked with TheSpeedGamers, Emile did speed-runs of games, such as EarthBound and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door for marathons. He helped commentate a few times, and also had an account on the TheSpeedGamers forums. He appeared on-camera during the Winter 2009 Pokémon Marathon, wearing a silver mask concealing his face. He helped out in the Mother/EarthBound marathon with TheSpeedGamers, by doing a speed run of EarthBound, and attempting to break the world record. Due to unfortunate circumstances, he did not accomplish his goal. He attended the Mario Marathon on June 11, 2010 for TheSpeedGamers, to raise money for ACT Today, where he took off his mask and showed his face to the public for the first time.

Some time after revealing (via Twitter) that he is a fan of the game commentary group BrainScratch Commentaries, Emile met up with the quartet of un-professional commentators to do matches of Super Smash Bros. Brawl and co-commentating Super Mario Galaxy. Some even guest starred on his own projects, with SomecallmeJohnny joining him for the ScareScraper, and Ted being part of the scrapped Melee tournament on The Runaway Guys.

Emile made regular appearances on Stephen Georg's channel, and they appeared in each other's videos regularly. Emile helped to push viewers to StephenVlog by featuring Stephen on his channel (for Pikmin 2 Challenge Mode) and appearing in the vlogs. He also made several appearances on StephenPlays, such as the Mario Party Boards and Mario Party series, You're In The Movies, the Splatoon First20, and in the last episode of Pokémon LeafGreen. He also gave them a multitude of gifts, including a 3DS, an Xbox One, a Wii U, two Nintendo Switches, and one of the rarest GameCube game. On the other hand, Stephen and Mallory helped Emile by designing his iconic Cc logo and made a new one for each LP starting with his Ōkamiden Let's Play in 2012, and continued to make graphics for his Let's Play videos until 2022. Starting from 2013 and continuing until 2020, Stephen and Mal continued to visit Emile every year in either December or January to spend time with each other and exchange presents. As of July 2024, the friendship status of Stephen and Mallory with Emile since his controversy is unknown. As a result, it is also unknown whether they will ever collab again.

From 2014 to 2021, Emile did several collaborations with fellow Let's Player and ex-fiancee MasaeAnela, on both their channels and also on The Runaway Guys and Stephen's vlogs. The Let's Plays they collaborated on include Pikmin 3, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Fortune Street, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, Super Mario 3D World, Mario Party 2, Splatoon, Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome Amiibo, Pokémon Black & White, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Splatoon 2. From Pokémon Emerald to Pokémon Black & White, Masae created artwork for Emile's Pokémon Let's Plays, typically for his bios of Legendary Pokémon. Emile collaborated with Pokémon YouTuber Marriland on the now unlisted series Chugga & Marriland In DisastORAS!!. He collaborated with another Pokémon YouTuber Tama Hero on several projects on both their channels. In 2008, Emile co-hosted the weekly podcast Warp Zone with AntDude (known as Sonikdude at the time) as they discussed Nintendo related topics, releases and fan questions. Emile collaborated with several other YouTubers and Let's Players in his Pikmin 3 Mission Mode series, including Stephen, Claire, Tim, Lucahjin, ProJared, The Completionist, Yoshiller and Masae.

Since 2022, Emile and his best friend and recurring collaborator, Timothy Bishop (NintendoCapriSun), have done reactions to Nintendo Directs which are uploaded to Tim's channel. These videos contain their reactions to several game announcements including Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Pikmin 4, Super Mario Wonder, the Super Mario RPG remaster and the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remaster. Of these, the reaction to The Thousand-Year Door remaster is perhaps the most notable due to Emile's overjoyed reaction at Mario RPGs not being "fucking shit anymore", referring to his dislike of the modern Paper Mario games (Paper Mario: Sticker Star in particular). Emile uploaded this reaction to his own channel under the title "The Thousand-Year Door Reaction".

In July 2022, Emile joined fellow Pokémon streamers Partyarlie, Ajentvee, and Bryand as contestants on The4thGenGamer's Speedrun Survivor series. He was coached by PulseEffects and they ultimately won the challenge. Their complete run was not shown in the Speedrun Survivor series itself, as The4thGenGamer announced after the seventh episode that the series in its intended form would be cancelled, but later released a condensed version of the series in one video, which revealed that Emile and PulseEffect won the challenge. Like the other contestants and coachers, Emile was interviewed throughout the series on several occasions; his complete interviews were later released on The4thGenGamer's Patreon account. PulseEffect later released a video of his and Emile's run.[11]

In December 2022, Emile collaborated with YouTubers JaidenAnimations, Alpharad, and ScottFalco on a video where they played Splatoon 3. Emile lent Jaiden his DS, which was fitted with a capture device, so she could record gameplay for her video on Fossil Fighters, with Jaiden giving him a shout-out at the end of the video "The Most Underrated Game Ever" for his generosity. In October 2023, Emile guest starred on the podcast Razzle Dazzle to discuss Xenoblade Chronicles. In December 2023, Emile and Tim guest starred on the podcast Nintendo Switch Online Game Club by Good Vibes Gaming, appearing in the episode "Target Earth".

 with Emile

AntDude with Emile

A series of misunderstandings between Emile, YouTuber AntDude, and his girlfriend MissFushiGaming began in 2020 when a planned collaboration fell through. When Fushi could no longer attend the session, Emile stopped responding, leading Ant to believe Emile was only interested in the project to see her. This tension escalated when Ant ignored Emile’s messages, prompting Emile to contact Fushi instead as a way to reach Ant. Ant and Fushi misinterpreted this direct communication as a romantic pursuit, which made them uncomfortable. Further actions by Emile continued to be viewed through this lens of suspicion. After losing his own cat in 2023, Emile donated to Fushi’s fundraiser for her sick pet out of sympathy, and later sent her an educational link regarding the science of fetishes after she expressed interest in the topic during a stream. Additionally, when Emile inquired about the quality of life in Seattle while researching potential places to move, Ant and Fushi assumed he was trying to relocate specifically to be near her. These cumulative events led the couple to conclude that Emile’s behavior was inappropriate, despite Emile's actions being rooted in poor communication and logistical inquiries. In 2024, Ant publicly accused Emile of sending off putting texts to Fushi which she stated made her uncomfortable on many occasions, although this specific allegation was later revealed by NintendoCapriSun to have been a complete misunderstanding on their part, with Ant later admitting this.[12][13]

Personal life[]

Emile has mentioned in videos that he struggled with family and financial issues during his childhood, as well as with autism. For a short period of time, he believed he was misdiagnosed, writing in 2011: "Found out this week that I was never autistic and was put in special ed and on medication as a kid for no reason because the school thought my "different" behavior was a mental disability and not being gifted, which is what I really am. Oh, educational system, how you fail us time and time again. Always thought it was odd being told "you're disabled and need help" when I could do everyday things just fine. Then again, I never used it as a crutch for sympathy, so I guess nothing's changed."[14] However, in his EarthBound redux Let's Play, In Episode 55, Emile finally reveals that he is autistic, explaining he only took things back because a relative convinced him that he wasn't, and explains some things about how his mind works, right down to the way in which he visualizes his thoughts rather than remembering mental text blurbs the way that neurotypical people do.[15][16]

In his first few years, Emile never showed his face, except for one video he posted about wanting to see EarthBound on Virtual Console, when he was uploading his first playthrough of EarthBound, although he took it down shortly after and kept his face a mystery for newer subscribers. But he eventually subverted this after his appearance on TheSpeedGamers. Nowadays, while he still acts shy while on camera, he's no longer afraid to show his face. In his day-to-day life, Emile tends to follow a pretty straightforward and rigid schedule. He goes to the gym on a frequent basis to psyche himself up for recording and even hired a personal trainer, he neatly organizes his video game and merchandise collections, and he tends to frequent the same restaurants over and over again (notably Applebee's and Buffalo Wild Wings). Emile does spice things up with his eccentric personality, but as stated in his Animal Crossing: New Leaf LP on his birthday, this routine makes him feel happy and accomplished. As of 2019, Emile resides in Atlanta, Georgia. He lived in a rented apartment for years before he owned his first house in 2015.

Aside from YouTube, Emile is active on Facebook, Bluesky and Twitter. He has more than 108k Facebook fans, more than 258k Twitter followers and 18k Bluesky followers. On Bluesky and Twitter, he regularly talks about video games and interacts with his followers. From November 2024 onwards, Emile has stopped promoting his Twitter account in favour of BlueSky, stating that due to the "violent videos, disturbing content and hate speech", Emile stopped feeling comfortable promoting Twitter to his audience as a nice place to follow him, stating that "no kid should have to see that stuff."[17] After many asking him over the years, Emile decided to open a PO Box in November 2024.[18]

In October 2024, Emile announced the death of his grandfather, and spent that week spending time with his family and taking care of anything difficult for them.[19] He returned the following week and thanked his audience for all the well wishes about his grandfather, which his extended family saw and appreciated.[20] Emile had known this was coming for a while, and thought the last 5 times he saw him could've been the last time, so he considers himself lucky to have seen him so many extra times. He was a great-grandfather of two, one of which is 11 years old, so he made it really far.[21] Emile revealed it was a packed week for his family as they found out his grandparents had bedbugs the day after he passed, so they had to move his grandmother, her dog, and guests to other houses while also dealing with all the work that comes with someone dying, so Emile was glad he was there for support.[22]

Relationships[]

Due to an especially traumatic time when he was assaulted as a child, Emile was left unable to enjoy sex until well into his adult life. He struggled with comprehending anything sexual, which hindered his attempts at relationships. Even with people he was comfortable dating, Emile struggled with concepts like them seeing him naked or enjoying sex for years after that. On an EarthBound-centric podcast, Emile told the story about his first girlfriend, back in high school. She was a huge EarthBound fan, but she wasn't the nicest person, and the relationship turned sour. Emile's best friend at the time decided to try to find out what was going on, and he found out the only reason she was dating Emile was to impress Toby Fox, a fellow EarthBound fan who later became well known for his indie games Undertale and Deltarune.

Emile and MasaeAnela dated for 10 years from 2011 to 2021, and were engaged to be married. Their relationship had been private from the beginning, with only their friends and some close associates knowing about it. While the agreement to keep the relationship private was mutually agreed upon intially, at some point, Emile expressed a desire to make their relationship public, which Masae insisted on keeping private due to social pressure regarding their public appearances.[23] Emile respected her wishes and the relationship remained privitized up until January 2024. Masae states that Emile slowly became more intrusive with her boundaries despite being told to stop repeatedly, being uncomfortable with how Emile talked to/about her in the past, and his behavior regarding interactions with other women both professionally and privately.[24] Masae also stated a power imbalance in their relationship.[25] After she told Emile this, he tried to apologize to her on several occasions, but relapsed on his behavioral issues.[26] In the middle of 2021, Masae and Emile broke up and made the agreement to no longer associate with each other neither through their content nor their personal interactions. Later in 2022, Emile uploaded his Splatoon 2 Let's Play, which contained cameos of Masae recorded prior to their breakup. Masae, not having approved of this, resumed conversation with him to stop using any further mentions of her, which Emile agreed to.[27] However, the community speculated about Masae and Emile's relationship, even after Masae began her relationship with BrettUltimus.[28][29]

Emile later began dating his current girlfriend, who he announced he was dating in an episode of his Pokémon Black 2 & White 2 Let's Play, stating that he had been playing the game with her off-screen.[30] They continued their relationship long-distance until she moved in with Emile and Tim in December 2024.[31] Emile works hard every day to make sure their future together can be a happy, comfortable life.[32]

Pets[]

Emile has had several pets, including six cats named Kirby, Teddy, Chester, Sunny, Jak and Loki, and a rabbit named Pippy. Of these pets, Kirby was his longest lived and was around for most of his career, while Chester and Sunny are his current pets and are cared for by him, his girlfriend and Tim.[33][34][35][36] Kirby, Teddy and Pippy appeared regularly in his videos with Chester and Sunny likely to as well, while Jak was mentioned in the "Fifty Facts About Chuggaaconroy-Tag Video" and Loki was mentioned in a tweet Emile made in 2023. He has tended to his pets at precise times.

Kirby was named by Emile's mother. He was 5 years (or roughly 36 cat years) old when Emile started his let's play career, and was part of the Chuggaaconroy youtube family for 14 years (or roughly 72 cat years) since, so his fans knew him as long as Emile. Kirby had a habit of wanting to lay on Emile's lap during recordings. Other contributions from Kirby to recordings included meows and trying to get in front of the screen. He was also discussed by Emile often in recordings, along with Teddy. On September 16th, 2021, Emile announced that Kirby had end stage kidney disease, but that the cat was receiving medication for it. Kirby passed away the morning of July 8th, 2023, at the age of 19 years and 10 months, and Emile and Tim were there when Kirby passed away.[37][38][39] He was eulogized in a statement which announced Emile's channel would be going silent for a few days. This hiatus was prolonged by Emile getting severely ill, resulting in six weeks without videos. Emile later announced that Kirby had appeared in a few unreleased recordings prior to his death. Kirby's final recorded appearance was in Episode 48 of Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, and a tribute to him was featured in Pokémon Black 2 & White 2 Finale.

Teddy was adopted by Emile at some point after Kirby. Both cats would go on to be featured regularly in Emile's LPs, through making visual appearances and being mentioned in commentary. He was mentioned numerous times in multiple Let's Plays. Teddy was mostly found barging in on Emile while recording, sometimes messing with his recording equipment, random wires, and even his gaming system. Emile tells the story in one LP of him accidentally kicking Teddy so hard he hit the wall in his sleep. In early 2016, Teddy passed away, and was eulogized in a Facebook post and later in Episode 67 of Pokémon Platinum.

Emile with Sunny

Emile with Sunny

On February 19th 2025, Emile announced his new animal friends, the cats Chester and Sunny. They’re twins that do everything together. Sunny is a little cat with mittens, while Chester is larger and has white socks. They’re both talkative and loving. Emile expressed hope they will make appearances in videos going forward.[40] Sunny is the smaller twin, but don’t let his kitten face fool you. He’s the smart, independent one and comes up with the schemes. Things have to be on his terms, but he’s the most loving guy when he’s in the mood. He’s also an incredible acrobat, doing backflips to catch toys.[41] Chester is the larger of the twins. He’s considerate and protective of his little brother, always trying to take care of him and clean him. He’s an open book about what he wants, but never disrespects Emile to get it. He has a white stripe on his head, distinguishing him from Sunny.[42]

Pippy was Emile's house rabbit. She was a loving, smart rabbit with a bit of a temper. She was named after the Animal Crossing character of the same name.[43] On the night of October 4th, 2019, Pippy passed away, short of her 5th birthday. Emile paid tribute in a statement later that day.[44] The finale of Super Mario Galaxy 2 was dedicated to her.

Controversies[]

Temporary suspension, EarthBound video takedowns and other copyright issues[]

Gotta say, I want to thank each and every one of you who was patient throughout this whole thing. I would've never had such a strong drive to come back without you, even if I like making videos so much.

―Emile's message to his fans after his account was unbanned

Emile has navigated complex production and legal hurdles that have frequently delayed or altered his content. In July 2010, Emile and Tim were suspended from their accounts due to a series of false copyright claims filed by an individual or group using fake names.[45] The claims targeted videos from Emile's Pokémon Crystal and Super Mario Sunshine Let's Plays.[46][47][48] After submitting counter-claims, Emile's account was unbanned on July 31st, and Tim's followed on August 3rd.[49][50][51][52] Following his reinstatement, Emile's videos were temporarily removed again due to a technical error on YouTube's part before eventually being permanently restored.[53][54][55][56][53][57][58]

During the production of his Pokémon Crystal Let's Play, he was forced to scrap a highly anticipated video covering the Celebi event after discovering that a hired artist had committed art theft. Emile revealed that the artist had plagiarized a sketch from a Pokémon VHS box art, leading him to sever ties with them to maintain creative integrity. His channel was also significantly impacted in 2013 when Nintendo began aggressively targeting Let’s Play videos with Content ID claims to seize ad revenue, a policy that created temporary financial strain until the company eventually ceased the practice.

Legal disputes over music have further complicated his upload schedule. A specific episode of his Chrono Trigger Let's Play was delayed by a legal squabble with an unnamed rapper who had sampled the "Black Omen" theme in a song, causing YouTube's automated system to flag the gameplay footage. Emile successfully fought the claim, as the rapper held no legal ownership of the original game music, and the video was eventually released in 2019. In a similar vein, his Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga Let's Play was postponed for over a month due to an undisclosed legal issue that he was reportedly not permitted to discuss publicly.

Hey guys, I’m sure you’ve heard about Sony Music taking down EarthBound videos. Unfortunately, I too haven’t escaped unscathed. They started by taking my ad revenue, I disputed it, and they came back saying “Nope! We own your video!” But whatever, at least they were still up. As of today, some episodes of the EarthBound Let’s Play remake have been taken down for copyright. I’m working on the problem, but am unsure which direction it will go. It’s a shame because I consider that series one of the best things I’ve made and now you can’t view it through. For those asking “How can Sony own EarthBound videos?!” It’s because they distributed a CD of the music in Japan, so it’s in their archives of things to claim automatically.

―Emile's statement on the video takedowns

In June 2021, the Japanese division of Sony Music issued copyright claims agains five episodes of Emile's redux EarthBound Let's Play, citing ownership of the game's soundtrack distribution rights.[59][60][61][62][63][64] These claims led to the loss of ad revenue and temporary removal of several videos from the Let's Play. Emile was one of several YouTubers affected by this, and worked with fellow content creator The Completionist to appeal the claims.[65][66] Although the videos were initially restored after it was shown the claims were fraudulent, one episode was taken down again shortly after before eventually being permanently restored with further help from The Completionist.[67][68]

Harassment, emotional abuse and sexting minors allegations[]

Hey, everybody. It has been a long time since I last shared anything with you, but I now feel ready to give an update on how I've been doing, and clear up speculation on some incidents that have been brought up since my last message. Whenever something blows up online, people make a lot of incorrect assumptions based on not knowing the full story, and often assume the worst possible context. I would like to start by clearing up these misconceptions. I haven't wanted to reveal information about others, but I think at this point it's best that everything is out in the open. I have removed irrelevant personal information as I only want to say as much as I need to in order to set the record straight. Please do not bother anybody I name here - I do not want others to experience what I went through. I have already asked that people not harass my accusers and it is disappointing to see this ignored or not respected; I truly don't want anybody to be attacked over this.

―Emile in his Google Doc response

's experience and statement were a core and significant part of the overall controversy surrounding Emile, heavily influencing public perception and the subsequent temporary hiatus of their collaborative group, The Runaway Guys.

MasaeAnela's experience and statement were a core and significant part of the overall controversy surrounding Emile, heavily influencing public perception and the subsequent temporary hiatus of their collaborative group, The Runaway Guys.

In January 2024, Emile faced multiple allegations of inappropriate behavior and sexual harassment from several women, including fellow content creators Lady Emily and MasaeAnela, and a third individual, Lawly.[69][70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78][79] The primary accusations centered on a pattern of boundary-pushing and unsolicited "shoe/foot roleplay" messages that made recipients uncomfortable. Most seriously, Lawly released logs from 2010 detailing sexually charged conversations that occurred when she was a 15-year-old minor and Emile was 19.[80]

Emily accused Emile of sexual harassment and having a foot fetish, claiming in 2023 he persistently attempted to engage in nonconsensual erotic foot fetish roleplay with her over direct messages, which she detailed using shared screenshots and videos.[81][82][83][84][85][86] Following those allegations, Emile was mocked and faced widespread internet scrutiny, with many users re-contextualizing his older videos and public comments about shoes and fitness, viewing them through the lens of the allegations. Amidst the backlash, Emile issued two statements where he apologized to Emily and the community for overstepping boundaries in their friendship.[87][88][89][90]

Masae's allegations of emotional abuse emerged one week later after she released a statement formally disassociating from Emile and disapproving of his actions, citing his history of emotional abuse behavior and negligence regarding her boundaries during their relationship.[91] Her statement led to immediate debate and strong reactions from fans, many of whom rallied behind her and and highlighted patterns of concerning behavior in their older collaborative videos, including instances where Emile would repeatedly make jokes or comments that appeared to make Masae visibly uncomfortable or prompted her to tell him to shut up. While originally viewed as playful banter, Masae’s statement clarified that Emile historically pushed boundaries despite her repeatedly asking him to stop.

Masae's allegations were soon followed by sexting allegations from a former fan of Emile who was a minor at the time of their initial interactions. Twitch Streamer Werster released screenshots of sexually explicit roleplay chats from 2010 between a close friend of his named Lawly, 15 at the time, and Emile, 19 at the time. He also shared a Google Document written by Lawly which included 48 pages of discussions and chat logs primarily from AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) and Discord. The logs dated back to early-to-mid 2010 when Lawly was 15 and Emile was 19, continuing with more recent Discord screenshots from 2021 to 2022. The logs contained evidence of sexually-charged roleplay and conversations involving the removal of shoes and boots that Lawly described as inappropriate given her age at the time of the initial interactions. She noted that reading the old logs caused her physical pain and led her to question if he ever truly saw her as a friend. While Emile already faced backlash over the prior allegations, the Lawly sexting allegations garnered the most backlash due to Lawly being a minor at the time, which led to widespread condemnation across social media and being widely considered at the time as an abuse of Emile's fame and power dynamic.[92]

After the allegations, Emile faced severe backlash from his fanbase, losing over 30,000 subscribers on his main channel within a week, while The Runaway Guys collaborative channel lost over 10,000 subscribers. In February 2024, The Runaway Guys channel went on a hiatus and the other members, Claire and Tim distanced themselves from Emile publicly, while remaining personal friends. The Thrown Controllers and The Runaway Guys Colosseum events continued under a different branding, without Emile's involvement in an official capacity for a period. Emile himself asked YouTubers to dissociate themselves from him to protect their channels from backlash. The allegations against Emile had a severe impact on his mental health and resulted in him taking a hiatus. He developed internal bleeding, lost significant weight, experienced suicidal thoughts, and required two trips to the emergency room. Emile even called a suicide prevention hotline and was admitted to a mental health ward, where he stayed for five days. He then sought psychiatric help, including therapy, behavioral health sessions, and medication for psychotic depression and a chemical deficiency. He stated that his girlfriend was a source of emotional support and encouragement during his mental health crisis. Tim also provided support during Emile's mental health crisis, with Emile saying that Tim saved his life.

In April 2024, Emile released a comprehensive response titled "Hey, Everybody" via a Twitter thread and an extensive Google Document. Within this statement, he addressed the allegations from the three primary accusers by providing critical personal context regarding his intentions, correcting specific factual claims he believed were misrepresented, and revealing previously private histories.

Emile publicly revealed for the first time that he and Masae had been in a serious romantic relationship for 10 years and were at one point engaged to be married. He explained that the relationship remained hidden because both parties initially wanted privacy, though they eventually had a difficult breakup in 2021. He attributed her public distancing to the stress of being bombarded by fans during the controversy and clarified that his continued use of her in video cameos after their split was based on a misunderstanding that they were still on friendly terms.[93]

Emile stated that he was shocked by Emily's initial outreach in 2023 regarding their past conversations and immediately sought professional psychiatric help after apologizing, believing the matter was resolved privately. He disputed her claim that he constantly asked for foot pictures, clarifying that he once asked for a photo of her wearing shoes he had purchased for her as a birthday gift—a gesture he has made for many friends, including male ones. He further explained that their roleplays and jokes were often mutual and silly in tone, with Emily actively participating and encouraging the interactions.[94][95][96]

Regarding chat logs from 2010 when he was 19 and she was a minor, Emile described himself as an "idiot teenager" making vulgar jokes common in internet culture at the time. He alleged that Lawly had previously admitted her goal was to manipulate him into having sex with her, and he claimed he cut all contact in 2010 because her romantic interest and an explicit gift she sent made him and his mother uncomfortable. Despite this, he expressed deep pain over her public statements, noting they had reconnected as close friends for several years before she came forward with the old logs.[97][98][99][100][101][102]

After he initially claimed that his interest in footwear was purely stylistic and not sexual with friends, Emile admitted to possessing a kink for feet and shoes. He explained that for much of his life, he compartmentalized this interest, often viewing his frequent discussions about footwear as silly or a joke rather than explicitly sexual. He acknowledged that he shoehorned this fetish into conversations with multiple people, including friends and colleagues, which led to uncomfortable and inappropriate interactions. Emile stated that during professional treatment, he learned his tendency to engage in shoe-related roleplay often resurfaced as a coping mechanism during times of high stress or personal tragedy. He emphasized that he is continuing psychiatric help and taking medication to better regulate his behavior and ensure professional boundaries are maintained.

A significant portion of the document was dedicated to his health, where he disclosed a diagnosis of psychotic depression and a chemical imbalance that severely affected his ability to interpret social cues and sexual boundaries. He explained that the intense public backlash led to a total mental collapse, resulting in a stay in a psychiatric ward for suicidal ideation and physical ailments including stress-induced internal bleeding and extreme weight loss. By sharing these details, he sought to explain the roots of his past behavior and emphasize that he had spent his months away from the internet undergoing intensive therapy and medical treatment to ensure such misunderstandings would not happen again.[103][104][105][106]

Emile's response shifted public opinion, with a large portion of the internet community accepting his refutation of the most serious accusations. Many people shifted to his defense, while others remained skeptical. Many supporters believed the case was a prime example of cancel culture where accusations, regardless of evidence, are enough to ruin a person's life and career. Masae confirmed Emile's account and also asking for the community to stop bothering them.[107][108] Emile confirmed that he held no grudge towards Masae and understood that her previous actions were driven by a need for peace, not genuine malice. Werster shared a follow-up Google Document written by Lawly in which she denied Emile's narrative, she stated that he was the one who allegedly started having sexual conversations with her, and denied ever wanting to use him for underage sex or manipulate him in that manner.[109] Lawly maintained that she did not intend to frame Emile as a predator, but rather felt that the way he spoke to her when she was a minor was "dated and extremely unacceptable". Lawly mainly focused on messages from June to July 2021, where Emile allegedly stated that he was attracted to her, but she didn't have the same feelings toward him. Public discussion highlighted discrepancies between Lawly’s denials and screenshots provided in Emile's document, which allegedly showed Lawly discussing wanting to engage with older men while she was underage.[110] In response, Emile admitted his memory of the past was imperfect and apologized for his misunderstandings.[111][112][113][114][115][116][117][118][119] Emily issued a final statement to Emile expressing hope for his recovery and improvement, and apologizing for any mental distress she caused.[120][121]

In June 2024, Emile returned to creating content and uploaded backlogged bonus videos, then making a full return in August 2024 with a playthrough of the Future Connected Campaign of Xenoblade Chronicles.[122][123] The Runaway Guys channel returned to uploading videos in December 2024. Their first Let's Play upon returning was Banjo-Tooie, which began in June 2025. Although the channel had already returned to uploading content, they waited until Emile felt comfortable again before recording a new Let's Play. Since late 2024, Emile has returned to content creation, though his future collaborations with Stephen Georg remain uncertain. Between October and November 2024, both creators removed direct links to each other's primary channels from their "Second Channel and Friends" or "Affiliates" sections. Since Emile’s return to content creation in mid 2024, Stephen and his wife Mallory have not interacted with him publicly. Emile also did not promote or participate in the couple's annual Extra Life charity marathons in 2024 and 2025, an event they had collaborated on since 2012. Fans noted the lack of interaction, with some speculating they're still friends personally but not collaborating publicly due to the controversy, while others are unsure.

Trivia[]

  • In a Wired interview from 2013, Emile noted that he would likely end his Let's Play career sometime before he turned 30, partially due to wanting to pursue a career as a professional video editor at the time, and also out of worry that his popularity would fade with age.
  • Emile says outright he's playing certain games because he personally loves them and wants more fans to either know about the game, or convince his fans to give the game a second chance to impress them. Most of the time, this works, with many people even admitting to playing along with him or deciding to replay it after watching his Let's Plays.
  • Emile's game collection is ordered alphabetically and by platform.
  • Emile says outright he's playing certain games because he personally loves them and wants more fans to either know about the game, or convince his fans to give the game a second chance to impress them. Most of the time, this works, with many people even admitting to playing along with him or deciding to replay it after watching his Let's Plays. The ones listed here are just a selection of many.
    • Ōkami in particular got a lot more sales after he started playing it. Coincidentally, Ōkamiden was released near the end of his series, and likely gained popularity thanks to the first game's new fanbase.
    • Xenoblade Chronicles 1 gained a much higher profile after Emile began his LP, which was exasperated when Shulk was announced for Super Smash Bros. 4 during the LP's hiatus.
  • In general, Emile tends to have a low opinion on his Let's Plays of video games that have since been remade, as they now appear outdated in contrast to whatever changes and/or new content the remakes have to offer.
    • In his fifth anniversary video, Emile reveals that he personally thinks his early Lets Plays suck, mainly because he was so afraid to be himself back then. The fact that he was limited to only ten minute videos at the time forced Emile to rush through games, in stark contrast to the more in-depth playthroughs that attempt to show off everything they had to offer that he's since become known for. The current playlist description for his Mother LP explicitly singles it out as his least favorite LP.
    • Emile admitted in part 17 of Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 that he regretted using Haywire the Zebstrika on his team in the first game. This is due to Haywire severely falling off in usefulness halfway through the game and learning the winner of the nickname contest had plagiarized their name and reasoning from another website.
  • Emile is considered to a VIP for the fandoms of several games he plays, including EarthBound, Ōkami, and Xenoblade Chronicles.
  • In March 2023, on the 15th anniversary of Emile's first Let's Play video "EarthBound - Part 1: Meteor" being uploaded, the YouTubeGaming Twitter page posted a tweet referencing the occasion, referring to Emile as a "now let's play legend."
  • He has shown himself to be incredibly generous. For example, he once gave away 24 copies of Xenoblade Chronicles to his friends for Christmas in 2013 and he gave away 30 copies of the game for his viewers for a contest in his Xenoblade LP including four factory sealed ones. This generosity is also shown in a few StephenVlogs videos, where we can see many of the gifts he has given to Stephen and Mal.
  • Emile got the name "Chuggaaconroy" from a random name generator on a Cartoon Planet website.
  • Emile has hesitated on doing a Fire Emblem Let's Play due to its fanbase.
  • Emile's favorite Pokémon is Archen and its evolved form Archeops. This motivated him to use an Archen in Pokémon Black & White.
    • His favorite Pokémon before Gen V was Lucario, and before Gen IV it was Wartortle.
  • Emile voiced the Postman in Zelda Universe's 2020 dub of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D.
