Cocomelon, formerly checkgate, ThatsMEonTV and ABCkidTV, is an American YouTube channel and Web Series maintained by British company Moonbug Entertainment and founded on September 12, 2005 by Jay Jeon and his company Treasure Studio Inc., which was based in Irvine, California, United States. It is the third most subscribed YouTube channel on YouTube and the second most subscribed channel in the United States. It is also the most subscribed kids and educational channel. It is also the first educational YouTube channel to hit 100 million subscribers. Cocomelon - Nursery Rhymes consists of rhymes and kids songs played over 3D animations and primarily focuses on a family with three kids and their animal friends.. (sometimes a new person comes along.) As of April 2021, Cocomelon is the third or even the fourth fastest-growing channel in subscribers and the second or third fastest-growing in views, getting over 2 or 3 million subscribers and 2 to 4 billion views monthly. As of December 19, 2023, Cocomelon has over 169 million subscribers and 173 billion total views, making it the most subscribed & most viewed channel in the education category. It is the first channel in the world to ever get over one billion views in one week.

History[]

Beginning[]

The channel that would later become Cocomelon began as ThatsMEonTV (known on YouTube as checkgate) on September 1, 2006, by Jay Jeon and his wife. Cocomelon uploaded their first two videos, two versions of the Alphabet Song, to YouTube in September of 2006. Nine months later, they uploaded another alphabet-based video, "Learning ABC Alphabet - Letter "K" - game". ThatsMEonTV almost exclusively created sporadic 2D educational videos about the alphabet and only used animals in the videos, before being rebranded as ABCkidTV in 2013. The first re-branding was also around the same time that the channel switched its focus to rhymes and songs. From 2016 onward, ABCkidTV began switching from 2D to 3D animations, and introduced humans alongside the animals.

Increase in Popularity[]

On August 18, 2018, the channel re-branded for the last time as Cocomelon. Starting that year, the channel started gaining more attention due to a change in the YouTube algorithm which allowed Cocomelon to grow at a high rate. The channel is now one of the fastest-growing channels as of 2023 (rivaled only by T-Series, MrBeast and SET India) with over 163 million subscribers. Despite this rapid growth, the channel has slowed down in subscriber growth but the reason is unknown.

Acquisition by Moonbug[]

On July 30, 2020, Moonbug Entertainment, the owner of Little Baby Bum, announced they acquired Cocomelon, alongside Blippi, another popular children's YouTube channel. Moonbug plans to add new characters to the videos and introduce toys and other merchandise. They also mentioned that they will focus on expanding Cocomelon's distribution globally in different languages and other platforms. Moonbug added Cocomelon on Netflix in 2020, which became one of the top rated shows on the service.

On December 12th, 2020 the channel reached 100 million subscribers, becoming the third YouTube channel to reach it.

PewDiePie vs Cocomelon[]

On June 1, 2020, PewDiePie made his first video on Cocomelon, discussing about how they might end up being the biggest channel on YouTube. He mentioned T-Series and wanted to "team up" with them to battle against Cocomelon. In addition, he said he would make a diss track on Cocomelon similar to the ones he made on T-Series.

PewDiePie's Cocomelon Parody Intros[]

In PewDiePie's first video on Cocomelon, he mentioned how he wanted to get as popular as Cocomelon and decided to start putting in intro parodies of Cocomelon's intro into his videos. They were similar to the actual intros used in Cocomelon's videos but instead feature Felix's voice shouting "PewDiePie!" as well as the name PewDiePie in a similar font to that of what Cocomelon uses. Many fans of PewDiePie also contributed, making their own logo parodies using animation. As a result, many compilations of these intro parodies were made which became quite popular.

PewDiePie's diss track[]

On February 14, 2021, PewDiePie released a satirical diss track on Cocomelon named "Coco". Much like PewDiePie's other diss tracks on T-Series, it contains references which were satirical and joking in nature, with no harmful intentions. Although the diss track was targeted towards Cocomelon, it also jabs towards J.K Rowling and her comments towards transgender people, and Felix's past disputes with T-Series. This was likely due to Felix not having much to say regarding Cocomelon because of the simple nature of their content. PewDiePie mentioned in the comments section that this would conclude the rivalry between him and Cocomelon, then later deleted on March 4, 2021.

Although well-received among fans of PewDiePie, the song became controversial due to the stuff Felix said regarding Cocomelon such as the disproportionate head-to-body ratio and making references towards "Bath Song", the most popular video on Cocomelon's channel and one of the most viewed videos on all of YouTube. He also pokes fun at the parents who let their kids watch Cocomelon, likely due to parents relying on YouTube as a "babysitter". The original music video for the song was taken down just four days after being uploaded on February 18, 2021, due to child harassment and bullying, which many fans argue against never was the intention. This was due to PewDiePie appearing to use profanity in front of kids and having them repeat back. As of February 21, 2021, the song can still be found on Spotify. Cocomelon has yet to respond to the situation although they did stop posting on their Twitter likely due to PewDiePie's fanbase spamming on their posts.

Defeating PewDiePie[]

On April 25, 2021, Cocomelon surpassed PewDiePie in subscribers doing so almost 11 months after the battle began. It is now the third most subscribed channel on all of YouTube, only behind T-Series and MrBeast.

In 2019, Cocomelon uploaded a nursery rhyme called ā€œBoo Boo Songā€ and was massively copied by other kids channels without any sign of credit. There are more than 50K videos about the song (excluding Cocomelonā€™s videos)

  • Cocomelon is currently the second slowest channel to have reached 100 million subscribers, doing so in 14 years, three months, and eleven days after the channel was created.

  • If you look up Cocomelon on the Wayback Machine on September 18, 2010, it is revealed that Cocomelon had once uploaded a video called "Mint Studio Wireless Computer Speaker" which was uploaded in October 2009, but it later got removed for unknown reasons.[2][3]
