―Wilson’s farewell message | ||
Wilson Rafael de Azevedo (born: June 26, 1989)[1], better known online as Colônia Contra-Ataca! or as Senhor Wilson, is a Brazilian YouTuber who does video games, movies, TV series and cartoons reviews. He is mostly known for the Freaking Fucking Games series, in which he reviews infamous and old video games with a twist of humour and sarcasm.
He's also famous for his high effort and production value videos, especially in the "Vinet Saga" lore, which is intertwined with most Freaking Fucking Games (FFG) releases. His channel, namely his passion, garnered the attention of many retro gamers who hold his work in high regard.
Personal Life[]
Not much is known about his personal life, and most of it is shown through small trivia and snippets of his childhood that are occasionally shared in his videos. Wilson was born in June 26th, 1989, in Rio Claro, São Paulo, where he still lives. He studied in the State School Raul Fernandes Chanceler until graduating high school. From an early age, he grew fond of video games, and soon discovered that they were his passion. [2]
After graduating from school, Wilson never had much stability financially. After completing high school, he worked in several part-time jobs: as a fork-lift driver, waiter, dog walker, and even as a bartender in a sports bar. The only consistent thing in his life was his passion for video games, which never ceased despite facing many hardships. He would spend a great part of his childhood and teenage years gaming until the creation of his channel in 2011.
He is also married to Moriá Velis, a fellow YouTuber who goes by the name "Coisa de Moriá" online. His brother Gabriel, known by his alias Fresh, is also an YouTuber and appears frequently on Wilson's channel while also having one of his own, Freshnético (formerly, Fresh Games).[3]
Career[]
Following a near death experience after being hit by a truck in an accident, Wilson lost his job and was unable to be reemployed due to a broken arm. After spending several months bedridden, while also lacking funds to pay his rent, one of his friends showed him the Cinemassacre channel in hopes of cheering him up. Wilson quickly became obsessed with his style of content, which got him to eventually becoming a fan of Nostalgia Critic (Doug Walker)'s content. One of the Doug's videos, in which he celebrated the 2 year birthday of his website, served as the starting point of Colônia Contra-Ataca, leading to the channel's creation. Wilson explains that the sense of community in that video, which gathered many cherished youtubers for the sake of their respective passions, was something that he aimed for in his youtube career, hence the choice of the word "Colônia" (or hive) for his nickname. [4]
Over the years, the channel grew in a relatively slow pace, which could be due to the niche content that appeals to the very specific demographic of retro gamers; apart from having some of his videos occasionally going viral, his content didn't really get much traction consistently. This, along with several problems with demonetization, slow schedule (which hinders the promotion of his releases by the YouTube algorithm), and copyright claims, led to a lot of instability in Wilson's finances. To try and continue living off of his work, he promoted a Padrim (a crowdfunding platform much like Patreon) page, and maintained his channel through its usage until he achieved more stability. Nowadays, being a Warner Play partner and affording to have a higher production value in his videos, his content is delivered in a much more professional and refined manner, while also not departing from the very same style that built his reputation.
Content[]
Colônia Contra-Ataca![]
Wilson's content varies greatly depending on the subject being discussed. However, it can be said that Colônia Contra-Ataca! is a review channel, as that's the format that's present in most of his videos. His two most well known series, Freaking Pause Pra TV and Freaking Fucking Games are well known in the retro gaming, as well as reviewing communities, and are where most of his efforts go to.
His content usually revolves around geek culture, with a focus on video games. Whether it be on Freaking Pause Pra TV or Freaking Fucking Games, his "angry" humour (clearly inspired by the Angry Video Game Nerd character) and heavy sarcasm are a constant in his videos. In his reviews, he is also known for his insightful and well put out points that are well paired with his trademark humour.
Cartuchito/Acusando Gorpe[]
Wilson and his then friend Ronaldo, from the channel Gato Galactico, created the channel Cartuchito as a side project of both of their respective channels. It consisted mainly of classic gameplay videos with commentary, with occasional vlogs and animations. The channel quickly grew among both of the founders' fanbases and even surpassed Wilson's channel's views for a while. Eventually, Ronaldo left the project to focus on Gato Galactico (which was undergoing a radical change in content at the time), and Matheus Canella took his place as the cohost. The new duo was even more successful than the previous one, and Cartuchito went viral for some time, until Canella left. The show then continued for about two years with Rik as the cohost, and then it was turned into the podcast Acusando Gorpe, which debated various themes within geek culture. The new podcast seems to not have met expectations, however, as it's been inactive for several months now.
Segments of Colônia Contra-Ataca![]
Main Segments[]
- Freaking Fucking Games - His most known series. In it, Wilson reviews infamous video games with his trademark humour. It is presented through the character Sr. Sr. Wilson, an overly-angry videogame geek who is always forced to review bad media. It pairs critique with humour.
- An underlying series by the name of "Saga vinet" runs simultaneously with FFG; it is a lore-heavy extension of the main segment that focuses on the shenanigans of Senhor Senhor Wilson and Bob, the CEO of the internet provider Vinet, who constantly tries to destroy Wilson and his career through different strategies. In lore, Bob is sometimes the person who sends the games that will be reviewed by Wilson, in the hopes that one of the games is so bad that it completely ruins Wilson's channel.
- Freaking Pause Pra TV - A spin-off series of FFG. It is presented by an alternate version of Sr. Sr. Wilson and has most of the elements of the main series. The key difference is that it focuses on cartoons and shows instead of video games, although it still reviews media that is based on or has connections to gaming in general. It also lacks the lore present in FFG, relying more on the reviews themselves and being more dependant on the source material. The most viewed video on the channel, Freaking Pause pra TV - As Aventuras de Sonic The Hedgehog, is an episode from this show.
Other segments[]
- Caixa Postal da Morte Mortífera/Unboxing Mortífero - An unboxing series in which Wilson reviews gifts sent to him by fans. It used to be called "Caixa Postal da Morte Mortífera", but its name was changed to comply with YouTube's Family Friend Policies.
- Fresh Reviews - Reviews of modern games by his brother Fresh. It was eventually moved to his brother's own channel.
- Odiador Vai Odiar - The Hater, a character that sounds even angrier than Senhor Senhor Wilson, gives his inputs on various themes related to internet culture with a guttural, throat-ripping voice. It features heavy and frenetic editing and many catchfrases, such as "Water Power" and "Que porra é essa?!" (What the fuck is this?!). The name itself, which is a pun on the “Haters gonna hate” motto, reflects the sarcastic essence of this character.
- Jogos Bons Que Você Não Conhece - Wilson reviews and promotes various obscure, underrated games that he enjoys. Weirdly enough, it used to be the only reviews that actually rate the media being discussed, albeit in an unusual manner.
- Pergunte Ao Bob - Bob, the villain from the Vinet Saga, answers to questions or posts made by fans. This series features, according to Bob himself, "dumb questions and even dumber answers".
Miscellaneous[]
- Vida Longa ao Marinheiro (comic) - This comic book tells the story of one of Wilson's most iconic characters, Major Wilson, which is, essentially, Wilson as a veteran telling stories and giving advice about life, content creation and even gaming. The comics try to expand not only this character's lore, but the whole channel's. It was drawn by MFC and has 16 issues, along with a prologue, intermission and an epilogue.
