In 1982, the Cape Verdean Football Federation was founded, and became a FIFA member in 1986.[1] In 2000, the federation joined CAF.[2]

Cape Verde national football team[]

On 19 April 1978, Cape Verde played its first international football match against Guinea, in which it lost 0–1.[3]

On 20 November 2002, Cape Verde would play a match against a non-African country for the first time in its history, Luxembourg, which resulted in a 0–0 draw.[4]

In 2013, Cape Verde qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in its history, after defeating Cameroon 3–2 on aggregate.[5][6] The country went all the way to the quarter-finals before Ghana defeated the national team 2–0.[7]

In 2023, Cape Verde qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations, in which the country went all the way to the quarter-finals before South Africa defeated the national team on penalties.[8]

On 13 October 2025, Cape Verde qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time after defeating Eswatini 3–0 in the qualification, making them the smallest country by area and the 2nd smallest country by population (only behind Iceland in 2018) to qualify for a FIFA World Cup.[9][10]
