The Brazil national football team (Portuguese: Seleção Brasileira de Futebol) represents Brazil in men's international football.
History[]
On September 20, 1914, Brazil played its first international match with Argentina, which they lost 3-0.[1]
On June 6, 2013, Brazil achieved their lowest-ever ranking of 22nd in the FIFA ranking.[2]
World Cup[]
Brazil gained international prominence in the 1950 FIFA World Cup.[3]
In 1958, Brazil won their first World Cup title, defeating Sweden 5-2 in the final, becoming the first nation to win a title outside of its own continent. Pelé described this as a nation coming of age.[4]
Brazil won its second World Cup title in 1962, defeating Czechoslovakia 3-1.[5]
In 1970, Brazil became the first team to win three World Cup titles, defeating Italy 4-1 in Mexico.[6]
Brazil, after a 24-year absence from winning a World Cup or participating in a final, finally triumphed in the 1994 World Cup, defeating Italy 3-2 on penalties.[7]
Brazil secured its fifth World Cup championship by defeating Germany 0-2.[8]
In March 2003, FIFA announced South America's hosting of the World Cup for the first time since 1978, in line with its policy of rotating the right to host the tournament among different confederations.[9] Brazil was officially elected as host nation unopposed on October 30, 2007,[10] after Colombia withdrew from the process.[11]
The Seleção suffered their biggest defeat at the World Cup, losing 7-1 to Germany, marking their first home loss in a competitive match since 1975.[12] The match, nicknamed the Mineirazo, was a reference to the nation's previous defeat on home soil, the Maracanazo against Uruguay in 1950.[13]
Trivia[]
- Brazil has been the most successful team in the FIFA Confederations Cup, winning it four times in 1997,[14] 2005,[15] 2009,[16] and 2013.[17]
