―Couriway's intro |
Anthony Salzarulo[1] (born: August 13, 1999 ),[2] better known online as Couriway (formerly Antwn), is an American gaming YouTuber and streamer who speedruns Minecraft and does challenges relating to Minecraft speedrunning. Couriway broke the Minecraft speedrun world record for version 1.16 with a time of 14:36 on November 3, 2020. He has since been able to ride that wave of popularity to become one of the most popular Minecraft speedrunning YouTubers.
Previous aliases[]
Before going by Couriway on social media, he created and deleted multiple YouTube channels under different aliases[note 1] as mentioned in his 100,000 subscriber video.[3] Since the beginning of his time on YouTube, Anthony mostly played Minecraft. He started by switching from survival mode gameplay to multiplayer servers, some of which were an SMP (survival multiplayer server) he was invited to and a survival games server known as MCSG or Minecraft Survival Games. He later made Minecraft building tutorials as well.
During this time, he was also a graphic designer for the Florida Mayhem,[4] an Overwatch esports team owned by Misfits Gaming based in Miami and Orlando, Florida.[5] His most well-known alias outside of Couriway is Antwn or AntwnPls, which he used for most or all of his time with the Florida Mayhem.[4]
Minecraft speedrunning[]
Anthony began speedrunning Minecraft on the Couriway YouTube channel on August 1, 2020. Since then, his speedrunning progress was skyrocketing, including being the 5th person to get a sub-20 time in the Any% RSG 1.16+ leaderboard and having the Any% RSG 1.9-1.15 world record on 19th October 2020, despite that, he didn't get much recognition from the speedrunning community until on 3rd November 2020, he broke the Minecraft speedrun world record for Any% RSG 1.16+.[6] At that time, he only had about 200 subscribers; however, the record pushed him to about 8,000 subscribers in a month and he has been able to continue growing his channel at an even quicker pace than before. His former world record is also the second most viewed record for Any% 1.16+, currently sits on 1.6+ million views.
On December 31, 2022, he started his journey on beating Minecraft 100,000 times.[7]
Controversies[]
Debunked allegations[]
In 2020, Couriway was accused of sexual misconduct by two women, one of which wanting to press charges against him. They claimed they were taken advantage of during the 2019 Overwatch League Grand Finals. He would turn the tables in an hour-long video[8] that denies the allegations, as well as debunking much of the misconceptions. Since then, he has continued to upload videos and it seems that the allegations became a thing in the past.
Beef with Sapnap[]
On June 4, 2024 during day 3 of Twitch Rivals Event House of Nightmares. Sapnap was being loud and playing music near a lot of people. This irritated Couriway, Fulham, acho, and several other players in the event. After it was decided that the last game was not going to count and be canceled with no eliminations after issues happening, Sapnap spammed LETS GO in relief. This pissed off Couriway so much that he told him "can you stop being the most annoying fucking person in the server please." with Sapnap responding "who are u". Later on Couriway would complain further in another streamers chat. [9] Sapnap publicly responded on stream, calling Couriway jealous and disagreeing with the idea he was playing for the money, instead saying he just wanted to win a game he loves[10] . Other creators, like Jojosolos made similar remarks claiming Sapnap was entitled/money-hungry, a poor loser, & later saying she hoped he lost. [11][12] This predictably created a backlash from Sapnap fans. The same day (June 4th), Couriway posted a tweet saying he hoping Sapnap wasn't eliminated just so he could knock him out again, Sapnap quote retweeting with an image of his Squid Craft 2 win.[13]
On June 7, 2024 Couriway posted a apology but did not mention or apologize to Sapnap.[14] Some people criticized not mentioning Sapnap, and called it hypocritical of him to say he'd ban anyone for harassment given that "he had started harassing Sapnap".[15]
Channel hacked[]
In March 2021, Couriway's channel was hacked and the channel name was changed to Litecoin Foundation before finally being changed to Ripple Foundation. The channel privated all of Couriway's videos and the hacker(s) went live on Couriway's channel promoting a scam for the cryptocurrency Litecoin, similar to Bitcoin. Couriway stated that before he slept on March 21, 2021, he had 129,000 subscribers, and when he woke up on March 22, he had dropped to 116,000.[16] After relentlessly contacting YouTube about the situation for days, his channel was reinstated on March 26, 2021. When he got his channel back, he was at 102,000 subscribers and 27,000 viewers unsubscribed.[17]
