The Germany national football team (German: Deutsche Fußballnationalmannschaft) represents Germany in men's international football.

History[]

DFB (1900-present)[]

The DFB, or Deutscher Fußball-Bund, was established on January 28, 1900, in Leipzig, by representatives of 86 clubs.[1]

German Empire (1908-1949)[]

The first official match of Germany's national football team was on April 5, 1908 against Switzerland, with Switzerland winning 5-3.[2] In July 1912, Germany's largest official defeat to date was 9-0 against England Amateurs in Stockholm, Sweden.[3] Gottfried Fuchs set a world record with 10 goals for Germany in a 16–0 win against Russia at the 1912 Olympics, becoming the top scorer. His international record was surpassed in 2001 by Australia's Archie Thompson.[4]

West Germany (1949-1990)[]

Hungary, having been unbeaten for 32 consecutive matches, was broken by West Germany's 3-2 victory at the 1954 FIFA World Cup.[5]

In the 1966 World Cup, West Germany reached the final after defeating the USSR in the semi-final, and England won the match 4-2.[6]

West Germany secured a 3–0 victory over the Soviet Union at the European Championship at Euro 1972.[7]

West Germany won their second World Cup as hosts of the 1974 World Cup, defeating the Netherlands 2–1 in the final in Munich.[8]

West Germany won their second European title at Euro 1980, defeating Belgium 2–1 in the final.[9]

West Germany won their third World Cup title in Italy, defeating Argentina 1-0, marking their last appearance.[10]

East Germany (1949-1990)[]

East Germany qualified for the 1974 World Cup in West Germany, where they were drawn in the same group in the first round. After winning games against Chile and Australia, they qualified early for the second round.[8]

Germany (1990-present)[]

The first game featuring a unified Germany national team was played against Switzerland on December 19th.[11]

Germany made it to the final of Euro 1992, but unfortunately, they lost 0-2 to Denmark, who were underdogs.[12]

Germany, reunified, won its first major international title at Euro 1996, becoming European champions for the third time.[13]

The 7-1 semi-final win against Brazil was a memorable World Cup game, with Germany's 7-0 score in the second half being the highest score against Brazil in a single game.[14] Germany secured a 1–0 victory over Argentina in the finals.[15]
