The Dallas Wings are a professional women's basketball team in the WNBA based in Arlington, Texas for the Western Conference.[1] They are currently one of the 12 teams in the league.

Background[]

The team dates back to 1998 when it was founded in Auburn Hills, Michigan and known as The Detroit Shock. Before their first season in 1998, they went through an expansion draft and then the 1998 WNBA Draft.[2][3] As the Shock, the team made it to the WNBA Finals 4 times. They won 2003 against The Los Angeles Sparks, 2006 against the now defunct Sacramento Monarchs, lost 2007 against The Pheonix Mercury, and won 2008 against the now defunct San Antonio Silver Stars.[4][5][6][7] The team relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 2009[8] and would start the 2010 WNBA season as the Tulsa Shock. The short-lived team would only make the playoffs in 2015 which was their final season and would lose in the Western Conference Semifinals.

Another relocation to Arlington, Texas would give the team its current name in 2016.[9] If the Wings did make it to the playoffs, they would lose in the first round with the exception of their recent appearance in 2023 where they beat the first round but lost the semifinals.

YouTube history[]

The channel was created on March 18, 2019, but didn't post anything until June 21, 2019, when "Dallas Wings x Texas Capital Bank" was posted. The video that features interviews of Dallas Wings player (at the time) Kaela Davis, Dallas Wings President and CEO Greg Bibb, Executive Vice President and Director of Community Development for Texas Capital Bank Effie Booker-Dennison, and Texas Capital Bank President and CEO (at the time) Keith Cargill, reveals that The Dallas Wings and Texas Capital Bank have partnered up for the 2019 season.[10][11]

Future videos seem to be more about subjects outside of the basketball court and is lacking content for basketball games on the court. They showcase videos such as press conferences, contract signing/resigning, brief showing of 2024 WNBA Draft related videos, "Inside the Wings", "Wings in the Community", "Walk N Talk", "AMP.E.D", and more. The Dallas Wings channel puts the community as its main characters in majority of its outside of the court content.

Trivia[]

  • As the Detroit Shock, the team finished last in the 2002 season with a 9-23 record. They finished first with a 25-9 record in the 2003 season and won the WNBA championship. This is the first time in WNBA history a team that finished last the previous season would win the title the season after.
  • The Dallas Wings is the WNBA team with the least amount of subscribers on their YouTube channel.
