A deleted video is a video that has been removed on YouTube either by the creator, or YouTube staff themselves. If you are browsing through YouTube and find a video with this thumbnail and title, it's a deleted video.

Deleted videos are usually unavailable to the public unless the user possesses a link, in which it would lead to a thumbnail, rather than the actual video in its place, before eventually redirecting to another video, if the user has the autoplay feature on.

The recent thumbnail consists of a black or grey background featuring a white exclamation mark (!) with a circle around it, paired with text appropriate to the situation in which the video had to be deleted. If the video was claimed or blocked, it would list the dispute, and if the video was manually removed by the user it would simply state as such and so on.

The mobile thumbnail only shows the reason why the video has been removed, there are no exclamation marks or an icon.

Previous variations of the thumbnail included the infamous red YouTube icon with a white emotion representing despair, as well as the same logo in gray.

Causes of a deleted video[]

  • It has been removed by the uploader.
  • It has been removed by YouTube for a community guidelines or terms of service violation.
  • The YouTube account associated with the video was closed, banned or terminated.
  • It has been removed by YouTube due to a Copyright takedown request.
  • It has been removed because it may contain graphic content, sexual gratification, offensive language, or violence that may be distressing for young viewers.
  • It has been removed because it was too long (due to the 12-hour restriction).
