The England national rugby union team is the representative men's national team in the sport of rugby union for England.

History[]

19th century[]

On March 27, 1871, England played its first international match against Scotland, marking the first rugby union international, with Scotland winning by one goal.[1]

The first Home Nations championship was held 1883, with England as the inaugural winners.[2]

20th century[]

England met Wales in their quarter-final match in the 1987 Rugby World Cup, losing 16-3.[3]

England hosted the 1991 World Cup and reached the finals for the first time, but lost to Australia 12-6.[4]

21st century[]

England reached the 2003 World Cup final against Australia, winning 20-17,[5] becoming the first World Cup champions for the first time since the 1966 FIFA World Cup. This victory marked the nation's first World Cup since the national football team won the 1966 FIFA World Cup. The victory was celebrated with a victory parade through London and a meeting with Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace.[6]

In 2015, England hosted the Rugby World Cup but was eliminated in the pool stage.[7]
