Lachlan (born: November 27, 1998[1][2]
) and Jaxon Fairbairn (born: January 14, 2001 ), collectively known online as Fairbairn Films, are an Australian comedy and YouTuber double act from Murray Bridge, South Australia. The brothers' work has been generally praised, and has been featured in various news articles, including some Australian news outlets. At one point they hired a third person, Darcy Ahrns, as an editor and actor for their videos. Darcy has since left to produce the Australian podcast Cold Ones.[citation needed]
Early life[]
Little is known about the brothers' early life. What is known is they grew up with the Ratchet & Clank franchise. In the 'Fair Enough Podcast' Lachlan mentioned that they lived in New Zealand at a young age, and that they moved to Australia sometime after that. Much of their family still lives in New Zealand.[citation needed]
Career[]
The channel was started on April 28, 2014. The channel's first video, "How to be Attractive to Men", was uploaded on June 4, 2017, having received 1.2M views as of July 31, 2021. The video follows Jaxina, a female alter ego of Jaxon, as she gives a humorous guide for females on getting males to like them.[3]
The channel uploaded its most popular video, "Dude Perfect but they have to use the first take every time", on December 26, 2018. The video has received 6.1M views as of July 31, 2021. In the video, the brothers and Darcy, as Dude Perfect, throw basketballs using various trick shots, but never score a goal, always using one take.[4]
Advertising[]
The channel filmed a Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart advertisement spot for PlayStation Australia called "Fairbairn Films Rift into Another Dimension"[5] (or "When you find weapons from Ratchet and Clank" on their channel)[6] in association with Poem Studio, Sure Studios and Mediacom. It was released on June 11, 2021, the same day as the game, a PlayStation 5-exclusive third-person shooter, on PlayStation Australia and Fairbairn Films' YouTube and Facebook accounts.
As Lachlan is playing video games in his bedroom, Jaxon is standing near him, initially hiding his Omniglove before using it to "rift" both of them into another dimension. Lachlan, agitated, is temporarily frozen with a Cold Snap and covered in a plant with a Topiary Sprinkler, before rifting Jaxon back, leaving himself looking for him.
They were chosen to launch the video game in Australia due to being "authentic and upcoming" and Australian, and the game could be promoted to core gaming and mainstream audiences in the country.
The spot uses official VFX assets from the game's developer, Insomniac Studios.[7]
Video production[]
In "How to make a Fairbairn Film", Lachlan shows the behind the scenes of a skit. He thinks of an idea based on what he feels like doing or what is popular, then comes up with a "clickable" video title and a thumbnail before using Google Docs to write the script, which usually ends up being 2½ pages long, nearing 3, for a 1½-2 minute skit, which are that long to avoid long filming times, especially when multiple locations are required. The brothers' house is often preferred for a "homemade" feel.
Each video's production only involves two or three people, and two in shot at once due to one person filming. If buying props, they cannot be too expensive. He comes up with how the video is presented during filming.
Editing is performed using Adobe Premiere Pro.
The Fairbairn Films cast and crew take up the following roles:[8]
- Lachlan Fairbairn - scriptwriter, editor, actor, director
- Jaxon Fairbairn - actor
- Darcy Ahrns - editor, actor
