The Portugal national football team (Portuguese: Seleção Portuguesa de Futebol) represents Portugal in men's international football.
History[]
20th century[]
On December 18, 1921, Portugal played its first official international football match with Spain, which they lost 3-1.[1]
They secured a spot in the FIFA World Cup after a successful group stage with only one draw and one defeat in six games. Portugal then secured their best World Cup finish to date by defeating the Soviet Union 2–1 in the third place match.[2]
21st century[]
UEFA Euro 2004 was held in Portugal, and saw Portugal defeat the Netherlands in the semi-finals, but lost to Greece in the final.[3]
Portugal secured their first Euros victory in the final, defeating the hosts France 1-0.[4]
Future[]
Morocco, Portugal, and Spain will be the host nations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.[5]
