The San Marino national football team (Italian: Nazionale di calcio di San Marino) represents San Marino in men's international association football.
History[]
20th century[]
The San Marino Football Federation was established in 1931,[1] but did not establish a national team until 1986. The team played against Canada U-23 in an unofficial international, losing 1–0.[2] In 1988, San Marino joined FIFA and UEFA, allowing participation in major championships.[3]
San Marino played its first FIFA-sanctioned match against Switzerland on 14 November 1990, losing 4–0 in a qualifier for the 1992 European Championships.[4]
On March 27, 1991, Valdes Pasolini scored the first goal for the San Marino team in an official game.[5]
21st century[]
In April 2001, San Marino secured their first away win against Latvia, drawing 1-1 in Riga,[6] leading to the resignation of manager Gary Johnson.[7]
San Marino secured their first win in over 70 attempts on April 28, 2004, a 1–0 victory over Liechtenstein, thanks to a goal by Andy Selva in the fifth minute.[8]
San Marino's debut UEFA Euro 2008 qualifying match saw a 13-0 home loss to Germany on September 6, 2006.[9]
San Marino played its first official match against a non-European team in a friendly match against Cape Verde on 28 March 2022, losing 2–0.[10]
2024–25 UEFA Nations League[]
San Marino faced Liechtenstein in the first round of the 2024–25 UEFA Nations League on September 5th at home. Nicko Sensoli scored a goal in the 53rd minute, securing San Marino's first competitive win since joining FIFA and UEFA.[11]
San Marino was promoted to League C after the national team won 3-1 against Liechtenstein in Vaduz on November 18, 2024.[12] This marked the first time San Marino scored more than one goal in a competitive match, scored more than two goals in any fixture, won an away match, and was promoted in a major international competition.[13]
