Charles Batchelor[1] (born: August 9, 1993)[2][3][4], better known online as Grian (pronounced GREE-an; formerly Xelqua and Gria), is an English YouTuber who makes Minecraft building tutorials, plays Minecraft minigames and is a part of the popular Hermitcraft server. He is also known for his affiliation with the immensely popular Minecraft MMORPG and WynnCraft, which he helped create. On occasion, he also posts video blogs (vlogs), usually about his holiday trips and invitations to Minecraft conventions and occasionally plays other non-Minecraft games (such as "Who's Your Daddy?" and GangBeasts). He is also known for having participated in the Minecraft Evolution (or EVO) server for 51 episodes. and a Minecraft roleplay series call Yandere High School and later Tokyo Soul. Many of his videos involve collaborations with other Minecraft YouTubers and friends such as Taurtis, DomRao, NettyPlays and several Hermitcraft members such as Mumbo Jumbo and GoodTimesWithScar.
Grian's channel grew in a quick period, and was one of the fastest-growing channels on YouTube for a short period of time, after uploading the video, "5 Easy Steps To Improve Your Minecraft House". Many of his tutorials focus on how to improve existing builds and often focus on how to improve building skills in specific areas, such as building pillars, towers, roofs, and of course, rustic houses, a subject which has become something of a running joke on the channel.
Minecraft skin[]
Grian's skin has several variants, but all of them are simply him in different clothes. His main skin is simply himself in a red shirt. Other variants include his Halloween skin, which looks exactly like his main skin but on the back of his hair is a pumpkin, and his winter skin, him in a scarf and a sweater, him with Mumbo Jumbo's moustache, demised Grian, rich Grian, Guinea pig Grian, Ariana Griande and other such craziness.
YouTube career[]
Before YouTube[]
Grian originally started his channel in late 2009; however, he did not begin to grow exponentially until 2014, then hit 1000 subscribers on 2015, and his life before YouTube played a major part in his success.
CraftedMovie[]
Before Grian became a fairly large YouTube personality, he was a part of the channel CraftedMovie, a Minecraft cinema channel that was active between 2011-2015. The channel originally consisted of a few starting members who starred in the short cinema clips; however, Grian became a part of the CraftedMovie team when he was invited to join the team as a set builder. Grian was one of the various members who joined the CraftedMovie team after the original founders. After building sets behind the scenes for a long while, he eventually started appearing in videos of his own due to popular demand, starring as his own character, with a Minecraft version of Link from the game Zelda as his skin. Grian became a popular internet personality through CraftedMovie. At the time, CraftedMovie was one of the largest Minecraft cinema channels and was one of the pioneers of cinema-type content in Minecraft.
After many years, the overall humour of the videos decreased and the channel's amount of subscribers depleted rapidly. The channel was not extremely profitable due to YouTube's algorithms, so a number of CraftedMovie personnel, including Grian, decided to shift their focuses to work on other projects, including Grian's own YouTube channel. His personal channel quickly became wildly more successful than CraftedMovie.
Wynncraft, an enormous Minecraft MMORPG server project which members of CraftedMovie and Grian greatly contributed to, eventually lead to the dissolve and permanent death of the CraftedMovie channel, paving the way for Grian's personal YouTube channel to grow, and the innovative Wynncraft server to be created under Grian's lead.
Wynncraft[]
Wynncraft was a major project that was mainly focused on by Grian and others between the gradual death of CraftedMovie and the explosion of Grian's own YouTube channel. Based on classic MMORPG-type games, Wynncraft was developed almost entirely under Grian for about three years. It was wildly successful and attracted many MMO-loving Minecraft players. Recently Tommyinnit has played Wynncraft, resulting increased popularity of the server. Grian's originally-small fanbase came mainly came from the Wynncraft community, and the channel became increasingly more popular with their publicity. Since Grian's YouTube channel took off, Grian has shifted his attention away from Wynncraft and more towards YouTube, which has angered some Wynncraft players, since Grian was one of the primary leaders. However, this has not stopped Wynncraft from being Minecraft's largest MMORPG with nearly 2 million regular players. As of August 2018, Wynncraft still holds the World Record for the largest MMORPG in Minecraft.
Evolution SMP[]
A simple concept, (also known as Evo SMP) took it member's through different versions of Minecraft, starting with Minecraft Alpha. Grian's first episode was on October 1, 2017. He and his friends began their journey in a place which became a city, but they all had their own individual bases as well. His friends Martyn, Timmy, LDShadowLady, NettyPlays, Tomahawk, Bigbst4tz2, Mini Muka, Taurtis and SystemZee started their journey together, with PearlescentMoon joining in later.
On January 10, 2017, Grian joined the Minecraft Evolution SMP as an "Evolutionist". The SMP took place in Minecraft from Beta, and players could slowly advance to a later version of Minecraft, i.e. after Beta was version 1.1, then advancing to version 1.2, etc., allowing an opportunity for players to experience older versions of Minecraft that they may not have played before.
On August 17, 2018, just after entering version 1.7 of Evo, Grian announced via Twitter that he would no longer be a part of the Evo server, stating that while he didn't enjoy it too much anymore, he had enjoyed his time there, and the other members would be continuing to be a part of the server after his departure. One final episode of the SMP was released after announcing that he would be leaving. As of August 2018, it was his longest-running series on the channel.
HermitCraft[]
Grian is a member of Hermitcraft, a server that only consists of YouTubers who were invited to join. Grian joined at the start of season 6, and has been actively participating in every season since that date.
Season 6[]
Grian chose the futuristic district to build his starter and megabase in. His starter base was previously just a sunken ship, but he built a bottle around it, turning it into a ship-in-a-bottle. He later started on his megabase, which was a sort of futuristic tower that reached the build height (pre 1.18 update). He participated in many events including the Hermitcraft Civil War, Demise, and the build contest. He also was one of the founders of Sahara, a big competitor of ConCorp. Near the end of Season 6, Grian decided it was time for him to leave. In his last episode, he built a rocket and shot up into the sky all the way up to season 7.
Season 7[]
Grian fell from the sky into the season 7 map. He made his home in a Jungle along with GoodtimeswithScar, Mumbo Jumbo, Iskall85, and StressMonster101. Grian's starter base was a hobbit hole built into a little hill near Scar's starter base. Coincidentally, Mumbo had built a hobbit hole on the other side of the jungle. A few episodes in, Grian started his mansion. Lots of fans joke around about how he never finished the back of the mansion. Grian participated in the Mayoral race by campaigning for Mumbo ("Mumbo for Mayor!"). They even made a robot (named Grumbot) to give them "advice" on what to do in order to win the mayoral race. When they lost the race, they lied to the robot saying that Mumbo did win and made him his own little world where Mumbo is the mayor. Grian was also the cause of the Mycelium war.
Season 8[]
Grian allied with GoodtimeswithScar, Mumbo Jumbo, ImpulseSV, and Pearlescent moon and founded "Boatem" by placing his boat atop the Boatem Pole. He later created the Boatem Hole for uses of sacrifice and pranks. Many Boatem meetings were conducted in the Boatem Hole. Grian also proposed the idea that the crew should connect their bases to create a "Gigabase". After the construction of the gigabase was nearly done, the moon started acting odd. It was getting closer and closer to the world, so it would appear bigger on the surface. The hermits eventually had to build a rocket and escape the world.
Season 9[]
Grian didn't plan on making a starter base, so he made a boulder he named "The Entity". He placed a conduit inside to make it appear "alive". Grian ended up making a starter base anyway, and made a house with a gradient of copper. Scar would joke about how it looked like a cat. Grian created a mini game that would take place on April fools day called "Secret Fools" (meant to be like Secret Santa) where one participating hermit would have to prank another participating hermit at random.

Build Swap[]
Grian created a minigame called build swap. The first one was published on December 19th 2015. He usually competed against Taurtis, with the judges being DomRao, Gareth, and/or JtheStar. He did two build swaps with Mumbo Jumbo. As of September 2020, the most recent one was with GoodTimesWithScar on his channel. Scar made his cat Jellie with a lightsaber.
MC Championship[]
Minecraft Championship is a Minecraft Tournament for YouTubers and Streamers run by Noxcrew, in which 10 teams of four compete in a series of 8 minigames decided by the participants. A point multiplier makes each game worth more as each round passes, incentivizing teams to vote for games they might be bad at early on in the event. In the end, the two teams with the most points face off in a round of ‘Dodgebolt’ to decide the winner of the tournament. This makes it possible for a team to win despite potentially having fewer points than the runner-up.

3rd Life (S1)[]
Started April 20, 2021, 3rd Life was mini-series created by Grian, where several Hermitcraft members and Evo SMP members got together on a small server to play hardcore survival. Everyone would start with 3 lives (green life is 3 lives, yellow is 2, and red is 1), and live peacefully, build alliances, etc. But when a player died twice, they would be a red life, and would be automatically entitled to attempt to kill anyone they pleased. Grian played in all eight sessions of the season and was one of only two people left alive in the final session. The session concluded with a final duel between Grian and Scar (the other living player), which Grian ultimately won.
Last Life (S2)[]
Started September 21, 2021, this sequel to 3rd Life was renamed to Last Life because of changes in rules from the previous season. The green, yellow, and red life rules are the same, but this time not everyone started with 3 lives. Everyone started with anywhere from 2 to 6 lives, and players could also choose to give their own lives away to other. There was also a "Boogeyman" chosen each session that would be tasked to kill a green or yellow player. If the Boogeyman succeeded in their task they would be cured of their curse. If they failed they would automatically turn to a red life in the following session. All members from 3rd Life returned for Last Life, and this season also saw the additions of Pearlescent Moon, LDshadowLady, and Mumbo Jumbo. Grian once again made it to the final session of the season, eventually dying in a planned final stand with teammate SmallishBeans when the rest of the server teamed up against the pair, who had been responsible for many of the green and yellow deaths throughout their time together.
Double Life (S3)[]
Started June 17, 2022, Double Life is the third season of the Life SMP by Grian where each player has three lives and becomes hostile on their last "red" life. The world is enclosed within a border, and there is only 1 enchanting table, which in this season was located in an Ancient City. There were no new members this season, but a few members from previous seasons of 3rd Life did not return for the Double Life season. The name "Double Life" comes from the season's twist: each of the 14 players was randomly assigned a "soulmate" who they would share a health bar with. Grian's soulmate was GoodTimesWithScar. Grian and Scar did well in Double Life, keeping their green lives for longer than any other soulmate pair. They played in all six of the season's sessions, ultimately losing in the sixth and final session.
Limited Life (S4)[]
Started March 3, 2023, Limited Life is the fourth season of the Life SMP by Grian where each player has 24 hours to live as well as bringing back the Boogeyman curse from Last Life. The world is enclosed within a border as well. Grian ultimately lost due to falling off Skynet, a portable bridge that Grian made whilst he was on a team with SolidarityGaming and Smallishbeans, after both of them were dead, dying on the 8th and final session.
Secret Life (S5)[]
Started October 20, 2023, Secret Life is the fifth season of the Life SMP by Grian where each player has three lives and becomes hostile on their last “red” life. Each player has 30 hearts with no regeneration. At the start of each session, a player is given a secret task. If they succeed their task, they are gifted hearts. But if they fail, you get nothing. They can reroll for a harder task to earn greater rewards. But, if they fail that task, they lose hearts. Grian allies himself with Ethoslab and ZombieCleo, their alliance being called “The Roomies.” He lost his first life to his and Ethoslab’s wither, who was named “1 stick wither.” His second life was taken when Pearlescentmoon shot him with an arrow. His last life was lost to a PVP battle with GeminiTay, Dangthatsalongname, and ImpulseSV.
100 Hours of Hardcore Minecraft[]
In between the end of Hermitcraft Season 8 and the start of Hermitcraft Season 9, Grian started a 100 hours of Hardcore Minecraft series. He, along with SmallishBeans and GoodTimesWithScar, had to try to survive 100 hours in survival Minecraft without dying. If one died, their series would be over. Grian's goal for this series was to "beat" the game (i.e., starter/mega base, defeat Wither & Ender Dragon, etc.). Once he and SmallishBeans reached the 97th-hour mark, they invited 6 of their friends onto the server to try and kill them before they could complete 100 hours.
Trivia[]
- He is the creator of TNT run, which is now a popular minigame used in multiplayer minigame servers such as Hypixel. He also created the popular minigames "Build Swap" and "Drawing... Badly".
- He has two pet cats, named Maui and Pearl. His friend and fellow Minecraft YouTuber, Mumbo Jumbo, and Mumbo's girlfriend, Vicki, met up with Grian in June 2018 to film a mini-documentary about these cats.[5]
- Maui was one of the contestants submitted to be added into Minecraft as another cat texture[6], but a cat named Jellie (owned by GoodTimesWithScar) won the contest.[7]

- He was formerly the owner of the mc.Grian.net Minecraft multiplayer server, which hosted many minigames, including a "Survive the Disasters" minigame which has been featured in some of his videos. Sadly the server had to be shut down due to funding running out.[11]

- He planned out a remodel of his garden in Minecraft, then asked landscapers to remodel it according to his Minecraft build.
- Grian was born on the same day as his friend and fellow YouTuber fWhip, although Grian is one year older.
- He has a running gag of being late to Solidarity's streams due to various chores and activities.
- He visited Ghana for two weeks in July-August 2022 to supervise a school being built which he helped fund.
