The Official Pokémon YouTube channel is the official YouTube channel for the Japanese media franchise Pokémon. The franchise debuted in 1996 with the Red and Green versions for the Game Boy. The game series has since inspired more media for the franchise, including an anime series, manga, card game, and various spin-off games.

Content[]

Their videos consists of trailers for upcoming unreleased games, trailers for upcoming anime episodes and movies, videos about the game series and card game and other things related to Pokémon.

Controversies regarding the franchise[]

Flashing Lights[]

An episode of the anime series titled "Electric Soldier Porygon" was broadcasted on Japanese television on December 1997. Over 700 people suffered from epileptic seizures due to a scene that contained flashing lights and various bright colored patterns. This resulted in the episode being banned worldwide and the anime series being put into hiatus for 4 months.

Beauty and the Beach[]

The episode "Beauty and the Beach" was broadcasted on American television on June 2000. It was rerun only 2 months after it was first aired on American television and was never shown again on the United States. It was banned due to it containing a scene where James from Team Rocket was shown wearing inflatable breasts.

Media containing Nazi imagery[]

In the anime episode "All Things Bright and Beautifly", a scene showed Jessie, James, and Meowth from Team Rocket along with many Team Rocket grunts raising their hands in a manner similar to the Nazi salute. This resulted in the scene being edited for the English dub of the episode. Alongside that, Registeel's Diamond and Pearl sprites also have it raising its hand similar to the Nazi salute, which resulted in the sprites being changed in the Platinum version.

Promotional Toys[]

In 1999, Burger King released handheld toys to promote the first movie of the franchise. A child ended up suffocating from the toy, leading her parents to create a website titled "Pokemon Kills". This resulted in Burger King to stop giving away the toys and offered extra food instead for a limited time.

Racism involving Jynx[]

One of the many Pokémon species called "Jynx" was criticized for being a negative stereotype of African-Americans due to the Pokémon's face color originally being black. This resulted in the Pokémon's face color to be changed into purple.

Trivia[]

  • Pokémon is the second highest grossing media franchise in the world, only behind the Mario franchise.
