Dan Olson (born: c. 1980)[1] is a YouTuber who formerly worked at Channel Awesome (known as That Guy With The Glasses back then) from August 2014 to September 2015. He is the man behind the Folding Ideas video series - an analysis show attempting to establish things from a contextual and cultural viewpoint rather than from a fan-based or artform-based one.

Content[]

Dan makes videos about popular movies, software and sites[2] in pop culture, the art of storytelling[3] and what cinema says to its audience[4]. His style is relatively analytical among other internet reviewers, mostly observing works within their cultural context rather than from a fan's point of view. Dan formerly used "Foldy", a puppet talking box, to serve as the host of the show, but has since opted for his own appearance in later videos.

He also gives advice on how to edit[5] and tropes on audience reactions[6][7]. He is critical of authors[8], such as Snyder's takes on Batman VS Superman[9]. He is known for his satirical series "A Lukewarm Defense of" where he defends horrible movies like 50 Shades of Gray[10][11][12] and Suicide Squad. He is also a documentary[13] maker, making them on various subjects such as flat-earthers and movies[14].

He is very much left wing, having a vlog devoted to the Red Pill[15]. He is against Gamergate, supporting Zoe Quinn, and releasing a video discussing how texts carry with them "base assumptions", and then interpreting what he viewed as the "base assumptions" of Gamergate, and how they led to stochastic harassment and even terroristic threats against those targeted by the movement. He also managed Hbomberguy's charity stream.

He also has a hidden playlist of cat videos of his cat, Amy[16].

Dan is best known for his viral 2 hour documentary "Line Goes Up",[17] detailing the history and flaws of cryptocurrency, NFTs, and related subjects.
