Friday Night Funkin' is a rhythm game developed by Phantom Arcade, ninjamuffin99, EliteMasterEric, evilsk8r, Kawai Sprite, procgenkawa, with additional help from other people.[1][2]
History[]
2020[]
Friday Night Funkin' began development on October 3, 2020.[3] The next day, ninjamuffin posted a tweet about its work in progress, showing that he was working with Phantom Arcade (artist), evilsk8r (artist), and Kawai Sprite (musician).[4] On October 5, 2020, the game was released for the Ludum Dare 47 event (Stuck in a loop).[5] In November, the game released its demo version to Newgrounds and itch.io, which had several differences from the previous version.[6]
Newgrounds released a trailer for the game on their channel the following month. It featured Pico, Tankman, Cassette Girl, and Hank as upcoming playable characters.[7] On December 11, 2020, Week 3 was released, featuring Pico as an opponent.[8] A week later, ninjamuffin posted a teaser of "Satin Panties," one of the songs for Week 4. It featured Mommy Mearest as the upcoming opponent,[9] voiced by L0Litsmonica.[10] Week 4 was later released on December 27, 2020.[11]
2021[]
On January 20, 2021, the developers released the Week 5 update for the game. It featured three new songs composed by Kawai Sprite and Bassetfilms.[12] The Newgrounds Twitter account teased the next update for the game the day after. Unlike most weeks in the game, this one centered itself around a pixel style.[13] It was published on February 2, 2021, for Pixel Day, an event on Newgrounds.[14]
In April of the same year, the game released its Week 7 update exclusively to Newgrounds. The update had Newgrounds' mascot, Tankman, as the week's opponent.[15] Due to the amount of traffic entering the site at the time, Newgrounds crashed.[16] On April 18, 2021, Newgrounds posted a video to YouTube of the full game's Kickstarter trailer.[17] The Kickstarter revealed a stretch goal for the game, which showcased a list of ideas that the developers would add for a certain amount of money they received.[18]
In December 2021, Kawai Sprite revealed two songs featured in the game's next update.[19][20]
2024-present[]
After three years, Friday Night Funkin' released its WeekEnd update on April 30, 2024.[21]
Gameplay[]
The game is similar to that of DDR (Dance Dance Revolution). It has the player hitting arrows in a certain order, using the arrow keys or WASD keys.[22] There are five difficulties the player can choose from: Easy, Normal, Hard, Erect, and Nightmare.[23]
