Adam Peter Lanza † (April 22, 1992 - December 14, 2012 [aged 20]), better known online as CulturalPhilistine and fuckcomments, was an American YouTuber and commentator. He was also the perpetrator of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

Content

Adam created his YouTube channel on September 7, 2011, where much of his content was of Adam talking about various subjects, though only displaying a black background. He rambled on about religion, pedophilia, mental health, antinatalism, etc. Many of these videos would be separated into several parts. His last upload would be on January 29, 2012. The channel went unknown until 2021 when users on the mass killers subreddit discovered the abandoned channel, but it would eventually be taken down that year on September 13. The channel previously had 840 subscribers and 25,254 views. Some of these videos have been archived through transcripts and video downloads.

Personal life

Adam was born on April 22, 1992, in the town of Kingston, New Hampshire. As a child, Adam was reported to have experienced several developmental challenges such as communication and socialization delays, as well as sensory difficulties, socialization delays and repetitive behaviours. Due to this, he was seen by the New Hampshire Birth to Three Intervention program and referred to special education services.

After being enrolled in elementary school, Adam was diagnosed with a sensory-integration disorder which doesn't have an official status by the medical community but does display common traits of autism.

In 8th grade, Adam was placed on "homebound" status due to his axiety affecting his ability to attend school.

At the age of 13, Adam was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome by psychiatrist Dr. Paul Fox. At the age of 14, he was diagnosed with obsessive-cumpulsive disorder after being taken to Yale University's Child Study Center. He reportedly frequently washed his hands and changed socks up to 20 times a day, causing his mother Nancy to have to do three loads of laundry a day. He would also go through a box of tissues a day because he couldn't touch a doorknob with his bare hands.

While at the aformentioned Child Study Center, extensive support was recommended for Adam to be put in place by Robert King. King's colleague Kathleen Koenig also prescribed Adam with the antidepressent Celexia. Adam would take the medication for three days before stopping due to the side effects the medicine had on him. According to his mother Nancy:

“	On the third morning he complained of dizziness. By that afternoon he was disoriented, his speech was disjointed, he couldn't even figure out how to open his cereal box. He was sweating profusely ... it was actually dripping off his hands. He said he couldn't think ... He was practically vegetative.	”

Adam's father, Peter Lanza later speculated in a 2013 interview that Adam might have also had undiagnosed schizophrenia, with him noting that they had potentially missed it due to them attributing a lot of his behaviour to his Asperger syndrome diagnosis.

Mental decline

Around 2006, Adam began going onto a forum website dedicated to the Columbine School shooting, frequently making posts about his obsession with mass murderers as "Smiggles". He frequented the Super Columbine RPG and Shocked Beyond Belief forums, both of which are no longer available. He would also create a Wikipedia account, "Kaynbred" in which he would edit articles about shooters and terrorism. Adam and Nancy often went to the local shooting range where Adam would shoot with multiple of their firearms.

He was described by his family as socially isolated, as much of his time was dedicated to playing World of Warcraft and talking further about his fascination with school shooters, though the only time he would leave was to play Dance Dance Revolution at the arcade. In multiple posts and YouTube videos, Adam said he refused to go to a psychiatrist or get help due to his hatred of humanity because of his issues with diagnoses by doctors.

Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting

At around 9:30 AM EST on December 14, 2012, Adam would shoot and kill his mother Nancy with a .22-caliber Savage Mark II rifle while she was sleeping.

He would then drive to the school and shoot through a glass panel next to the front door due to said door being locked. Some reported hearing the initial shots through the school's intercom which was being used for morning announcements.

After entering, Adam would proceed into the school's hallway and to the faculty office, win front of which he would shoot three staff members: Principal Dawn Hochsprung, school psychologist Mary Sherlach and and lead teacher Natalie Hammond, who had gone to the hallway to determine what the sounds they heard were. According to one of the faculty members, the three women yelled "Shooter, stay put!", which alerted the other collegued and saved their lives. Adam would enter the office but would leave after failing to notice the people hiding there.

Nurse Sarah Cox and school secretary Barbara Halstead would call 911 and hide in the supply closet for the next four hours. School janitor Rick Thorne would run through the hallways alerting several of the classrooms about the shooter.

Afterwards, Lanza would enter Room 8, in which Lauren Rousseau, a subsitute teacher, was trying to hide the students in the bathroom. Rousseau, a behavioral therapist, and 14 of the children were killed in the classroom, with one of the children pronounced dead later at the hospital. The sole survivor was a six year old girl who had played dead during the shooting. When she reached her mother she told her: "Mommy, I'm okay, but all my friends are dead." Another girl who was hiding in a bathroom along with two teachers reportedly heard a boy screaming "Help me! I don't want to be here!", to which Adam responded "Well, you're here," followed by what she described as "hammering" sounds.

Adam also entered Room 10, in which teacher Victoria Leigh Soto had some her students concealed in the closets or bathroom, with some of them hiding under the desks. Soto was walking to the back of the classrom when Adam had entered. After seeing the children hiding under the desks, Adam would shoot them. At that moment, first grader Jesse Lewis would stand up and shout at his classmates to run, causing some of the children to be able to escape. Jessie would be fatally shot after facing Adam.

The police reportedly heard the final shot at 9:40:03 AM Lanza's body was found wearing a pale green pocket vest over a black polo shirt over a black T-shirt, along with black sneakers, black fingerless gloves, black socks, and a black canvas belt. Other objects found near Adam were a black boonie hat and thin frame sunglasses. The Glock Adam had brought with him was found jammed near his body and the rifle was found several feet away from him. A 9mm SIG Sauer P226, which had not been fired during the incident, was also found on Adam's body.
