Gura Gawr (がうる・ぐら) (birthday: June 20) is a VTuber affiliated with hololive as part of its first generation of English-speaking VTubers, HoloMyth, alongside Calliope Mori, Amelia Watson, Kiara Takanashi and Ina'nis Ninomae.

Content

Gura's first video was her debut stream, which was uploaded on September 20, 2020. In it, Gura revealed her full name, that her favorite color was blue, that her favorite food was salmon (though it was spelled "salman") and that her biggest fear was "loud stomak". The stream also revealed that her goals were to learn to play the banjo on stream, gain a 3D model so she could play Twister with her genmates and play the scariest horror game with a heart rate monitor. It was her most viewed video, only to be later dethroned by her first original song, REFLECT. After her debut, she uploaded gaming and reacting livestreams. On October 22, 2020 her channel received a Golden Play Button.

Her earliest videos were of a vastly different nature than her modern ones, as she would often open her streams with random and miscellaneous shark facts, speak with an unusual, made up accent (dubbed "Atlantean" by the fans, though the accent was later dropped) as well as pronounce her name differently - she dubbed herself "Gula" during the first few months of streaming, but would slip into the more common pronouncation "Goora", and as of December 2020, she has normalized using the latter. Gura has also stated that she does not care how you pronounce it, and both are acceptable.

In her early streams she was notorious for her lack of luck, as she repeatedly died in her first ever Minecraft stream, died early in Among Us and never got to play as the Imposter, and even died in Superliminal thanks to a glitch, despite the fact that it isn't even possible to die in the game. This has also extended to out of gaming, as when she showed her model to her genmates for the first time, for whatever reason her model render lacked all clothing (later Gura claimed that it was because as an Atlantean, she had no idea that humans were to wear clothes, and joked that if she reached 10 Million subscribers, she would reveal the naked render). During her six-month anniversay stream, Gura would cringe at her own debut.

Her bad luck streak also extends to those around her, as in a Minecraft stream she accidentally murdered Aqua out of excitement of playing with one of her idols for the first time (that, and Aqua was the one who pulled her down the VTuber rabbit hole), and also killed her pet parrot and Mumei with stray arrows. However, Gura's strength remains in rhythm games, and she has aced Extreme+ levels of Project Diva:Mega Mix while sleep deprived and using a controller she wasn't used to.

She has also played Among Us, Phasmophobia, Bus Simulator, Jump King, Devil May Cry 3, Among the Sleep, Outlast, Dead by Daylight, Dark Deception, Visage, A Way Out, SOMA, Taiko no Tatsujin, APEX Legends, Ring Fit Adventure, Superliminal, Don't Starve Together, Passpartout, Skyrim, Devil May Cry 4, Devour, Cookie Run: Kingdom, Metroid, Here Comes Niko, Apotheon, Superhot, Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem, West of Loathing, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Bully, Blue Archive, I am Fish, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Vampre Survivors, Apotheon, Grand Theft Auto 5, Project Diva Mega Mix, Scarlet Nexus, Unbeatable: White Label, Monster Hunter Rise and Stray. Most of her gaming livestreams are usually Minecraft Let's Plays and other miscellaneous gaming streams. Her favorite games are Lockstep, Muse Dash, Taiko no Tatsujin, Rhythm Heaven, Borderlands, Skyrim, Minecraft and Resident Evil, though favorite video game in her childhood was Barbie Horse Adventures: Wild Horse Rescue.

She also talks about anime and reads manga to her audience, and read Konosuba in an hour-long stream. She has cited the anime as one of her favorites.

Gura streams movies with her viewers such as Die Hard. Befitting to her shark theme, she streams films such as Sharknado, and for her 2021 birthday celebration, she watched Jaws with her audience.

On the same day, Gura announced her original song, REFLECT, which garnered over 5 million views in the span of one month. The song was praised for Gura's vocal range, as well as her speaking a variety of languages, even opening it by narrating the ancient Greek tragedy of The Trojan Woman.

For Valentine's Day 2022, she held a Valentine's Day Cake Bake stream, where she showed herself to have poor cooking skills. She also held another cooking stream on Halloween 2022, where she, mostly on accident, partially revealed her arms.

Collaborations

Most of her earliest collaborations were with Amelia and the two are close friends. Amelia also drew the first ever Gura fanart, and fandom commonly ships the two, with their ship name being "Amesame". This has been encouraged by them both, with Amelia calling Gura "her wife", Gura saying their love will last forever, singing the same songs about one another and in Minecraft, Gura tends to make lewd references and jokes about her, such as adding boobs to her statue and claiming that she "put her seed in Ame's chest" (in context, she was placing flower seeds in Amelia's Minecraft chest).

Gura sometimes will prank people in Minecraft, such as sniping them with arrows, telling Calliope you can milk horses in-game and setting up a circuit that emitted noises under Kronii's corporation just to annoy her (dubbed "Neighbour Wars"). This often leads to consequences like accidentally dying when she tried to prank Ame or Ina turning her house into winter.

Gura and Calliope have played World of Darkness, We Were Here Too and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with each other. The two regularly play Minecraft and Super Drink Bros and have also covered KING - Kanaria.

Gura and Kiara also play The Sims regularly, and Kiara has also praised her for learning Japanese, German and Russian from her rather quickly. Gura and Ina'nis have held an anime watchalong of SSSS.DYNAZENON. Gura, Kiara and Amelia have played Paranormal Cleanup together.

Other Hololive VTubers speak of Gura's kindness, such as Ina'nis, who threatened her wrath upon anyone who made Gura cry (the exception being tears of joy). Noel Shirogane stated that she wanted to learn English just to meet her, and that one of her goals was to get Gura to sleep with her. Rushia takes humiliating jokes at her expense to defend Gura, despite usually getting extremely upset at them. The Japanese branch of Hololive nicknames her "Same-chan", as "same" is the Japanese word for "shark". Gura and Coco met each other for the first time in Minecraft. While they never collaborated (though Gura had hoped to play ARK with her), when Coco graduated she made Gura promise to play ARK with everyone.

In her and Anya's first Dead by Daylight stream, they had a "cute off", and bonded over their similar small designs and features.

On 14 September 2021, during a Super Mario Party collab where Gura was the host, Hololive announced that Marine, Aqua, Gura and Ina'nis would form a new unit "UMISEA", due to their shared oceanic themes, and several videos and streams featuring the unit would be released throughout the month. In the next month, Gura and Shion Murasaki got "married" in a Minecraft stream, with Aqua and Amelia being their supporting bridesmaids. As of Summer 2021, Gura and Shion have been collaborating more in games and song covers.

Mumei and Gura's first interaction was when Gura accidentally killed her with stray arrows in Minecraft, leading to Mumei vowing revenge in spite of Gura's apologies and cleaning up her loot. However the two get along in general and have also reviewed rooms together.

Fauna was a huge Gura fan pre-Hololive and has said that she likes being "cringe" with Gura. Kiara, Fauna, Gura and Ina'nis have also played Monopoly together. Fauna, Mumei, Kronii and Gura have streamed Wolfquest together.

Kronii and Gura have played Escape Simulator.

Baelz has stated that she frequently texts Gura and the two are good friends.

With the debut of HoloX, Hololive's sixth generation, Laplus, Iroha, Gura and Calliope would partake in an English-language learning stream.

She has participated in the HoloEN/ID/JP Among Us collab, the HoloEN/ID Mario Kart tournament, and the HoloEN Among Us tournament.

Design

Her character designer is Amashiro Natsuki, and her modeler is Shin Uimishi. Her chibi model was made by Walfie and modelled by 入江燈. Gura's illustrator became famous overnight thanks to her character design of Gura, and went on to illustrate Luto Araka, Kana Kamiko, Naname Gokigen, Akami Karubi, Kona Draki and Detarame-chan.

At 4'7" (141cm), she is the third shortest member of Hololive, after Laplus (139cm) and Luna (140cm).

In the HoloMyth anniversary stream, Gura revealed that when her VTuber model was presented to her, she requested that she have an ahoge and shark teeth; the former request was denied. She was finally given an ahoge during her New Years Kimono outfit reveal.

She occasionally changes the color scheme of her model to a red one, referring to herself as "Gawr" and putting on a more aggressive personality, based off of the character from her song Reflect.

Lore

Gura is a descendant of the Lost City of Atlantis, who swam to Earth while saying "It's so boring down there LOLOLOL!" She bought her clothes (and her shark hat) in the human world and she really loves them. In her spare time, she enjoys talking to marine life.

Atlantis

Gura came from Atlantis, a land home to several marine underwater creatures. Culture in Atlantis is vastly different from the culture of our world, as over there people wear little to no clothes, speak Ancient Greek, publicly execute criminals by feeding them to animals in arenas reminiscent of Roman amphitheaters (Gura stated she witnessed a man get eaten by a megalodon once) and has gigantic hermit crabs that like to race. Cuisine of Atlantis is mostly fish and seaweed, but because it has no French fries, Gura lacks any interest in going back to it. 3,000-4,000 years ago, a major conflict regarding seashells broke out.

As of current, Atlantis is in ruins, though she hasn't specified why, and to visit it one would need equipment to combat its high-pressure oceanic water. Laplus claims to have sunk it but Gura hasn't confirmed this, and given how Laplus tends to lie to prop herself up, many have assumed she is lying.

Gawr is an evil, dark side of Gura's, who's existence was first hinted at in REFLECT, though her first full appearance was in an unarchived karaoke stream streamed on the 17th of August, 2021. In the stream she used petty, ridiculous and over-the-top insults towards Gura and mocked her genmates, as well as the surface world and their inventions, such as chairs and Fortnite. In REFLECT, Gura sang about how she hated her past self for being cruel and overly critical- the past self being Gawr. However this has not stopped Gawr from being verbally abusive regardless, lampooning Gura's accomplishments and success as "pwaying Minecraft".

Other

• Gura's species is a "Gura shark". In a Fall Guys streams, it was implied in a joking manner that "Gura" was an acronym for "Giant Underwater Rubber Animal", but later, she stated that despite not knowing what kind of shark she is, she likely is descended from one of the biggest species.
• Her mascot is a shark named Bloop, who has an "emergency rations" tin on his head. Gura has stated that he is her own emergency rations, and has also implied that he was responsible for the bloop. Apart from being her mascot, he also is used as a censor bar to hide anything Gura does not want to show. Like her genmates' mascots, he was illustrated by Ina'nis.
  • Bloop's species is a "shark shark"
• She has stated that she has forgotten her age due to being alive for so long, but has stated in her debut stream that she was 9927 years old and that her birthday is June 20.
• Her streams tend to have a clapping sound randomly, which Gura has insisted is the sound of her tail thrashing.
• She has flip-flopped on how her species reproduced, stating that she is a live-birth shark who ate her siblings in the womb. However in a Monster Hunter collab with Ina, Gura claims she lays eggs and claimed she came from one, despite earlier discussing her belly button.
• Gura has also noted that her skin never gets wrinkly no matter how long she stays in the bath.
• Gura claimed to have 55 teeth.

Fandom

Gura's fans are called "Chumbuds", but her channel members are referred to as "MemberShrimp". She also calls her fans "Chumbies".

Even Bandai Namco America are Chumbuds and watched her stream of Taiko no Tatsujin, as are many Japanese comedians. When Gura uploaded a stream of learning Japanese with Duolingo, the offiicial Duolingo YouTube channel commented "💚💚💚💚" underneath.

PewDiePie has appeared in Gura's chat before, and Merryweather Comics praised her song REFLECT. Her cover of KING - Kanaria (ft. Calliope) was praised by Pianominion and Louis.

Partnerships

Gura's first solo sponsorship deal was of BanG Dream! Girls Band Party!, and it also created a limited edition item that was themed after her. Gura would vicariously play it in her pre-Hololive days, and happily accepted it. All of HoloMyth were also invited to show sneak peeks of and host livestreams of Princess Connect! Re:Dive.

On March 12, 2021, to celebrate six months of VTubing, each Holomyth member would get their own official BGM image soundtrack featuring Camellia. The song inspired by Gura was called "Sharkventure". Gura also made an appearance at the anime expo lite 2021 and was featured in a Taco Bell commercial. She was invited to Dokomi 2021 as well alongside her genmates.

For the Hololive EN x Cookie Run collaboration, Amelia and Gura played Cookie Run Kingdom on stream. On November 2, OMOCAT tweeted that they scheduled a collaboration with all of HoloEN. Later in the year they also released exclusive merchandise based on Gura. Her original song, REFLECT, was featured in GROOVE COASTER WAI WAI PARTY.

On December 27, 2021, Tsukumo announced a merchandise deal featuring all of HoloMyth. In the same month, Gura partnered with Groove Coaster, and appeared as a virtual, voiced avatar in-game. On January 2, 2022, POP UP PARADE revealed that all of HoloMyth would be receiving their own figurines. In the same year Gura would be featured in the game Scarlet Nexus.

On April 26, 2022, Anime Central announced that Gura would make an appearance in their 2022 convention. On July 14, 2022, the Aniplus cafe announced a collaboration with hololive that would feature a special menu, accessories, sweaters and other goods based on HoloMyth. On the same day it was announced that she would appear at the Crunchyroll Expo as a Featured Guest. On July 20, 2022, AliceFiction announced that Gura and Kiara were sponsored to play their game.

On October 21, 2022, Otaku Lamps released lava lamps based on all five members of Holomyth. On November 27, 2022, CounterSide Global announced the release of their Gawr Gura skin. On November 28, 2022, Smile Base Cafe announced a collaboration with Gura, Ina'nis, Marine, Aqua, Botan, Suisei, Mio, Pekora, Watame, Sora, Mel and Subaru. On December 16, 2022, Smile Base announced a partnership with UMISEA.

On October 2020, an anonymous artist made channel membership emotes for Gura. After the stream ended, Gura eventually discovered that the emotes were actually traced from other artists' works. Upon hearing this news, she promptly removed the emotes, promising to be more careful in the future.

Personal life

Gura has a brother.

Having grown up as a farm girl in the South, she loves gardening and wishes to own her own greenhouse.

Prior to becoming a VTuber, Gura had signed a contract to work in children's television, which was cancelled over budgetary issues.

She used to volunteer at animal shelters to help take care of cats and as of July 20, 2021 Gura has adopted her own cat.
