Google Chrome is an American cross-platform web browser developed by Google. The browser, first released in 2008 for Microsoft Windows,[4] was built using free components from Apple WebKit and Mozilla Firefox[5] and later expanded to Linux, macOS, iOS, and Android.
History[]
Google Chrome was presented to then Google CEO, Eric Schmidt by Mozilla Firefox developers. Schmidt initially did not want Google to have their own web browser, however, the presentation changed his mind.[6] Rumors of Google building an independent browser started in September 2004. Development started in 2006,[7] spearheaded by now Google CEO Sundar Pichai.[8] The release announcement was originally scheduled for September 3, 2008,[9] and was instead released a day early as a beta version on September 2, 2008, for Windows XP and newer, supporting 43 languages.[10] It was later as a stable public release on December 11, 2008.
Platforms[]
The current version of Chrome runs on are:
- Windows 10 or later on x86 and Windows 11 or later on ARM[11]
- macOS 10.15 or later[11]
- 64-bit versions of Ubuntu 18.04+, Debian 10+, openSUSE 15.2+ and Fedora 32+[11]
- Android Oreo or later[11]
- iOS 15 or later[11]
Impersonation by malware[]
Google Chrome's popularity has led to the emergence of malware, such as "eFast," which hijacks file type associations, injects advertisements into web pages, and creates shortcuts for common file types and communication protocols. The malware's similar-looking icon was designed to deceive users, similar to Microsoft Internet Explorer.[12]
Trivia[]
- Chrome was an unplanned name.[13]
- Hatsune Miku has once collaborated with Google chrome.[14]
- The Chrome Web Store was launched on February 11, 2011, with the release of Google Chrome 9.0.[15]
