Groups was a feature on YouTube which allowed people to communicate and share videos over a group theme. Groups had existed since YouTube was first founded in 2005. The way it worked was if you were looking to communicate with a specific YouTube user, enter the user's name in the YouTube search field. Click on the linked name under any of the user's videos to go to that person's channel. You may find the contact information under the About tab there. In the early days, they were extremely prominent and popular, but their purpose was more or less a precursor to playlists, and as such, dwindled in popularity since then.
Beginning in 2007-2008, groups were removed from indexing in YouTube's in-site search without explanation, with playlists gradually being added as a feature for stringing together videos based upon a common theme. However, groups were still created and available on YouTube up until December of 2010 when they were removed due to being rarely used.
In their final days, most groups were:
- Frequently spammed with subscription requests.
- Mostly created for contest promotion.
- Hardly active or updated.
