Daniel, known online as Hiding In My Room (HIMR for short), or DanielIsBored, is an English-Malaysian YouTuber who primarily uploads videos about living in several different places across Europe and Asia amongst vlogs where he discusses his life and opinions.

Content

Daniel's first video was an animation, and he continued to upload unboxing videos. As an emigrant to Japan, he uploaded videos complaining about why he disliked living there, before uploading a similar video about his life in South Korea. Daniel has also uploaded vlogs of himself in Scotland, Berlin, Manchester, Liverpool, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Netherlands. While he hasn't vlogged about it, he has also been to Taiwan.

Occasionally, Daniel uploads an animatic on his channel.

Personal life

Daniel Lord was born in Maidstone Hospital, UK on March 20, 1989, to a British father and a Malaysian Mother. In his early years he used to suffer from hayfever every summer, due to his allergic reactions, the other children used bully and make fun of him. In 1999 his grandfather passed away, after he died Daniel's father decided to move the family into grandfather's house. The new house was too far away from Daniel's school, which led him to attend to a new school closer to him. He disliked his new school and found it hard to make new friends. After experiencing racism and struggling with self-identity issues, he moved to Asia multiple times, finding it a more comfortable environment.

Connections to Japan

Daniel has expressed a long-standing dream of moving to Japan, which he pursued from the age of 17 or 18. After spending two years learning Japanese and immersing himself in Japanese culture, he visited Japan for the first time and was enamored with the country. He later returned on a working holiday visa, hoping to work outside of English teaching. However, he struggled with language barriers and made frequent mistakes at work, leading to frustration from coworkers. After three months, he quit his job due to stress and anxiety.

Daniel recalls two incidents that led to his decision to leave Japan. The first involved an aggressive construction worker, which made him reconsider his future in the country. Despite trying to find another job, he was dissatisfied with his experiences and left Japan after four months. Upon returning to the UK, Daniel enrolled in a computer science course, but soon dropped out due to lack of interest. He continued visiting Japan, hoping to marry a Japanese partner and obtain a spouse visa. However, after achieving this goal, he became unhappy with the restrictions of long-term visas and decided to explore other countries instead.

Controversy

Elvis The Alien's video

Elvis made a video on Daniel where he nicknamed him "Asian Onision". He referred to Daniel's style of videos as "pessimistic" and called him entitled because of his attitude towards women, such as him complaining about his Tinder date refusing to have sex with him and how he didn't trust his girlfriend and constantly asked for her phone. Elvis also said that Daniel was monetizing his life on YouTube, which was unhealthy.

Despite this, the two later met in real life and became friends.

Drama with Chris Broad

Daniel discovered he had attended the same primary school as Chris Broad (Abroad in Japan). This connection came through a mutual acquaintance, leading to an online exchange between the two.

In August 2018, Daniel was live-streaming and browsing Facebook when he reconnected with a former primary school classmate, referred to as “Buttons.” During their conversation, Daniel learned that Buttons had been childhood friends with Chris Broad, whose mother had babysat her when she was young. Furthermore, Daniel discovered that Broad had attended the same primary school as him and had been in the same class as one of Daniel’s childhood friends. This revelation led Daniel to express excitement, as he had been an admirer of Broad’s success on YouTube.

Following this discovery, Daniel created a video detailing their unexpected connection. However, in doing so, he mentioned the specific village that Broad was from, a decision that would later lead to tensions between the two.

Interaction with Chris Broad

Shortly after uploading the video, Daniel received direct messages from Broad on Twitter and Facebook. Daniel noted that, despite having never received a response from Broad before, Broad reached out immediately after the video was posted. During their conversation, Broad revealed that he had been aware of Daniel for some time but had been reluctant to engage with him due to his controversial online reputation. Broad also expressed displeasure over the fact that Daniel had shared his hometown publicly, though he did not explicitly ask Daniel to remove the video. However, wanting to maintain good relations, Daniel voluntarily took down the video as a "gesture of good faith".

Additionally, during their exchange, Broad mentioned that Daniel’s prior critical video about Joey (The Anime Man), a close friend of Broad’s, had placed him in an awkward position. According to Broad, if Daniel had not made that video, Bizinger might have reached out to him as well. In response, Daniel deleted the video criticizing The Anime Man and apologized through Broad.

The Broken Promise

As their conversation concluded, Broad thanked Daniel for taking down the videos and suggested they could meet up for drinks when he was next in Osaka, likely in October 2018. If not in October, Broad stated that they could meet by the end of the year. Daniel, taking this as a genuine offer, awaited further contact. However, despite Broad visiting Osaka multiple times for his Journey Across Japan series and meeting with other YouTubers such as Joey Bizinger and Sharla, Daniel never received an invitation or further communication from Broad. This led to mounting frustration, as Daniel felt he had held up his end of the deal by removing his videos, while Broad had failed to follow through on his suggestion to meet.

By early 2019, Daniel concluded that Broad had no real intention of maintaining contact and that their interaction had been primarily motivated by Broad’s desire to remove any association between them.

Daniel’s Response and Fallout

Feeling manipulated, Daniel made a public video detailing the events and expressing his disappointment. He accused Broad of using friendly gestures to persuade him to take down the original video, only to ghost him once he got what he wanted. Daniel argued that Broad, like other YouTubers, was primarily concerned with protecting his brand image and distancing himself from controversial figures.

In retaliation, Daniel stated that he would use Broad’s name in his video title and tags, ensuring that his criticism of Abroad in Japan would appear in YouTube search results. He also made it clear that he had no interest in future contact with Broad, declaring their relationship permanently severed.

Sunny Arc

Formerly known as "English Teacher," Sunny was a viewer of Daniel's YouTube channel. Daniel had arranged a meetup with her for cereal around March 22, 2024, which ultimately took place on the 23rd. This happened while he was in Japan, despite still being in a relationship with Faster, his girlfriend at the time. During the meetup, some viewers noted that Sunny gave off strong "Mila vibes" and even managed to get Daniel to come out of his shell. They went to a karaoke bar, where Daniel went all out singing, showing a side of himself that surprised many. This led people to speculate about how Faster, his Thai girlfriend at the time, felt—especially since she hadn’t been able to bring out that side of him in the same way.

Sleepover incident

Faster didn’t allow Daniel, Bloodbucket, and Sunny to have a sleepover. She stated, "The conditions were that I would pay for the Tokyo hotels, but Daniel was not allowed to stay the night." According to Daniel, Faster was afraid they would end up having a threesome cereal or that she might sneak into his room. Eventually, Sunny backed out as well, telling Daniel she felt creeped out if he wasn’t there.

After being kicked out by his mum on January 12, 2025, Daniel relocated to Devon, balancing his finances by taking on delivery jobs. He also mentioned that a key reason for the move was to be closer to his then-girlfriend, Sunny. On February 23, 2025, tensions arose when Sunny was upset that Daniel didn’t offer to pick her up, opting instead to livestream and head to bed. Since it was raining, he didn’t want to go outside to drive her to his place. Frustrated by the situation, Daniel repeatedly ranted about it on his streams, which eventually led to Sunny blocking and breaking up with him.
