13th century[]
In 1282, the Habsburg monarchy was established.[2]
19th century[]
On August 11, 1804, the Austrian Empire was proclaimed by Francis II.[3]
The Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 was signed on March 30, transforming the Austrian Empire into the Dual Monarchy of Austria-Hungary.[4]
20th century[]
On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated, making it the most immediate cause of World War I that started on July 28.[5]
On October 31, 1918, Austria-Hungary was dissolved.[6]
Austria was annexed by Germany on March 12, 1938, which is known as the Anschluss.[7] The country would declare independence from Germany on April 27, 1945.[8]
In 1955, the Austrian tourism board was founded.[9]
The country joined the European Union on January 1, 1995, following a two-thirds majority vote in a 1994 referendum.[10]
21st century[]
On July 4, 2011, Otto von Habsburg, the last crown prince of Austria-Hungary, died.[11]
