Hulu is an American[1] online streaming service that was founded on October 29, 2007, as a free streaming service with ad support before becoming a paid streaming service in August 2016.

History[]

Hulu launched its service on October 29, 2007, as a free streaming service that included ad support;[2] it first beta tested its service privately and launched its site publicly in March 2008.[3]

In August 2016, Hulu officially dropped out the free version as they launched an another bundle as an ad-supported while ad-free bundle become expensive.[4]

Companies such as Disney and Comcast were disputing Hulu’s future, with Disney planning on buying Comcast’s stake in Hulu around 2024. On the same year, Hulu joined Disney+ as their new bundle released.[5]

On August 6, 2025, Disney announced that it would merge the standalone Hulu app into Disney+, with a new app planned to release sometime in 2026.[6]
